Wenn die Apparate A und B mit Material gefüllt sind, wird durch den beide Apparate verbindenden Dreiweghahn c und den Dreiweghahn b eine verhältnifsmäfsig geringe Menge heifses Wasser in den Apparat A gelassen, und durch Ventil α und das durchlöcherte Schlangenrohr g dem Apparat Dampf zugeführt. Die sich nun beim Kochen entwickelnden Dämpfe durchdringen das weiter oben liegende Material, werden am Rückflufskühler condensirt und tropfen durch das Material zurück, die oberen Schichten desselben auslaugend. Um die Auslaugung dieser oberen Materialschichten zu beschleunigen, kann man durch Ventil a¹ noch etwas directen Dampf in den Apparat eintreten lassen, welcher ebenfalls am Rückflufskühler condensirt. Hat man auf diese Weise einen oder zwei starke Absude gewonnen, welche durch die Dreiweghähne b und c mittelst Dampfdrucks nach einem dazu bestimmten Behälter befördert werden, so werden die später resultirenden dünneren Lösungen mittelst Dampfdrucks ebenfalls durch die Dreiweghähne b und c nach Apparat B befördert, wo sie zur Extraction von frischem Material dienen.
