Abstract

In a process to manufacture load-bearing automotive chassis components in high-strength steel alloy, the component is coated first with a phosphate bonding layer followed by a lamellar coating of zinc and aluminum flakes. The zinc is applied as multiple coats 3-8 mm thick either in a hot bath or as a spray and heat cured at 200 - 220[deg]C. Also claimed is a commensurate automotive chassis in which the load-bearing structural components include e.g. steering knuckle, steering stub axle, engine support frame, integral frame, A-column, B-column or C-column. The lamellar coating of zinc is subsequently coated with an organic paint applied as a foil.
