Description

Container lid comprising metal body and synthetic resin liner
Technical Field
The present invention relates to a container lid comprising a body made of a thin metal plate and having a circular top wall and a cylindrical skirt wall extending downward from the periphery of the top wall, and a synthetic resin liner disposed on the inner surface of the top wall of the body.
Background
A container, which is commonly referred to as a bottle can or a metal bottle, is formed of a thin metal plate such as an aluminum-based alloy and is formed with an outward bead at an upper end portion of a cylindrical mouth-and-neck portion and a female screw thread and a locking claw therebelow on an outer peripheral surface of the mouth-and-neck portion. As a container lid particularly suitable for such a container, the following patent documents 1 and 2 disclose a container lid comprising a body made of a thin metal plate and having a circular top wall and a cylindrical skirt wall extending downward from the periphery of the top wall, and a synthetic resin liner disposed on the inner surface of the top wall of the body. An annular recess is formed at an upper end portion of the skirt wall of the main body. The liner is composed of a first layer formed by press molding a hard synthetic resin material supplied to the inner surface of the top wall, and a second layer formed by press molding a flexible synthetic resin material supplied to the lower surface of the first layer. The first layer of the liner has a circular central portion extending along the inner surface of the body top wall and a circular peripheral edge portion extending along the peripheral edge portion of the body top wall and the upper end portion of the skirt wall. Disclosure of Invention
Problems to be solved by the invention
In accordance with the inventors' experience, however, it has been found that the conventional container lid of the above-described type has the following problems to be solved: (1) when the second layer is press-molded, a radially inner region in the outer peripheral edge portion of the first layer, that is, a portion of the outer peripheral edge portion adjacent to the central portion, is likely to be damaged. (2) When the second layer is to be molded, the synthetic resin for the second layer may not flow as smoothly as desired, and thus the second layer of a desired shape may not be molded.
The present invention has been accomplished in view of the above facts. A first object thereof is to provide a novel and improved container lid which maximally avoids the case where the radially inner side region in the peripheral edge portion of the first layer is damaged at the time of press molding of the second layer, without causing other problems such as a significant increase in the amount of material used.
A second object of the present invention is to provide a novel and improved container lid in which a second layer of a desired shape can be reliably press-molded.
Means for solving the problems
Through intensive research and experimentation, the present inventors have recognized that the radially inner side region of the outer peripheral edge portion of the first layer is damaged at the time of press molding of the second layer as follows: the thickness of the radially inner region of the outer peripheral edge portion is usually the same as or smaller than the thickness of the radially outer region of the adjacent central portion. Therefore, the radially inner region of the outer peripheral edge portion of the first layer does not have sufficient strength under a considerable pressure applied by the molding member for press-molding the second layer. Thus, based on this knowledge, the inventors have found that the first problem can be solved by making the thickness of the radially inner region of the outer peripheral edge portion of the first layer larger than the thickness of the radially outer region of the central portion and providing a step at the boundary between the central portion and the outer peripheral edge portion (even in the case where the step is not present by likewise increasing the thickness of the radially outer region of the central portion, this measure will increase the amount of material required for forming the first layer).
Further, the present inventors have intensively studied and experimented that, when there is a circular ring-shaped thickness variation region in the central portion of the first layer, the synthetic resin material for forming the second layer can sufficiently flow smoothly at the time of press molding of the second layer.
That is, according to the present invention, there is provided a container lid for accomplishing the above-mentioned first object, comprising a main body made of a thin metal plate and having a circular top wall and a cylindrical skirt wall extending downward from a periphery of the top wall, and a synthetic resin liner disposed on an inner surface of the top wall of the main body, the liner being composed of a first layer formed by press molding a hard synthetic resin material supplied to the inner surface of the top wall, and a second layer formed by press molding a flexible synthetic resin material supplied to a lower surface of the first layer, the first layer of the liner having a circular central portion extending along the inner surface of the top wall of the main body and a circular annular outer peripheral edge portion extending along an inner surface of the peripheral edge portion of the top wall of the main body and an inner surface of the upper end portion of the skirt wall, and the second layer of the liner being laminated to the central portion of the first layer, wherein a radially inner region of a peripheral edge portion of the first layer of the liner has a larger wall thickness than a radially outer region of a central portion of the first layer, and a step is present at a boundary between the central portion and the peripheral edge portion.
The present invention also provides a container lid for solving the second problem described above, comprising a main body made of a thin metal plate and having a circular top wall and a cylindrical skirt wall extending downward from a top wall peripheral edge, and a synthetic resin liner disposed on an inner surface of the top wall of the main body, the liner being composed of a first layer formed by press molding a hard synthetic resin material supplied to the inner surface of the top wall, and a second layer formed by press molding a flexible synthetic resin material supplied to a lower surface of the first layer, the first layer of the liner having a circular central portion extending along the top wall inner surface of the main body and a circular annular outer peripheral edge portion extending along an inner surface of a top wall peripheral portion of the main body and an inner surface of an upper end portion of the skirt wall, and the second layer of the liner being laminated to the central portion of the first layer, wherein there is an annular thickness variation region in the central portion of the first layer that gradually decreases in thickness radially outward.
The step is preferably 0.05-0.40 mm. The second layer preferably has a circular thin-walled central portion and a circular thick-walled outer peripheral edge portion, a downwardly projecting annular projection being present in a radially inner region of the thick-walled outer peripheral edge portion, and an outer peripheral edge of the thickness variation region of the first layer being located radially inwardly of an inner peripheral edge of the annular projection. Advantageously, the thickness variation region of the first layer is opposed to a radially outer region of the thin-walled central portion of the second layer, and the thickness of the radially outer region of the thin-walled central portion of the second layer gradually increases radially outward in favour of the thickness variation region of the first layer. The thickness variation region is preferably inclined at an inclination angle of 0.5 to 3.0 degrees with respect to the horizontal plane. Advantageously, the container lid is adapted to a container made of a thin metal plate, the container having an outward curl formed at a top end of the mouth-and-neck portion, an outer peripheral surface of the annular protrusion of the second layer of the inner liner being in close contact with an upper end portion of an inner peripheral surface of the outward curl, and a lower surface of a radially outer region of the thick-walled outer peripheral edge portion located radially outside the annular protrusion being in close contact with an upper surface to the outer peripheral surface of the outward curl.
The terms "upper" and "lower" as used in this specification and the "claims" refer to upper and lower, respectively, of the upright position of the container lid (i.e., in each of the positions shown in fig. 1-3).
Effects of the invention
In the container lid of the present invention, the wall thickness of the radially inner region of the outer peripheral edge portion of the first layer of the liner is larger than the wall thickness of the radially outer region of the central portion, and a step is present at the boundary between the central portion and the outer peripheral edge portion. In this container lid, the wall thickness of the radially inner region of the outer peripheral edge portion of the liner first layer can be made relatively thick without excessively increasing the amount of material required for molding the first layer, so that damage to the radially inner region in the outer peripheral edge portion of the first layer at the time of press molding of the second layer can be avoided as much as possible.
In the container lid of the present invention, a ring-shaped thickness variation region in which the thickness gradually decreases radially outward is present in the central portion of the first layer. In such a container lid, the presence of the thickness variation region promotes the flow of material at the time of press molding of the second layer. Therefore, the second layer of a desired shape can be reliably press-molded.

Detailed Description
The present invention will be described in further detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings showing preferred embodiments of a container lid constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Referring to fig. 1, a container lid, generally designated by the reference numeral 2, constructed in accordance with the present invention includes a body 4 made of a thin metal plate and an inner liner 6 made of a synthetic resin.
The body 4, which may be formed from a suitable thin metal sheet such as an aluminium-based alloy sheet, has a circular top wall 8 and a cylindrical skirt wall 10 depending from the periphery of the top wall 8. The area of the interface between the top wall 8 and the skirt wall 10 is circular in cross-section. An annular recess 12 extending continuously in the circumferential direction is formed at the upper end portion of the skirt wall 10. Also in a region immediately below the annular recess 12, a plurality of slits (notches) 14 extending in the circumferential direction are formed at intervals in the circumferential direction. The area below such a slit 14 is displaced radially inwards. At the lower end of the skirt wall 10 a circumferentially breakable line 16 is provided, whereby the skirt wall 10 is divided into a main portion 18 located above the circumferentially breakable line 16 and a tamper evident skirt 20 located below the circumferentially breakable line 16. The circumferentially breakable thread 16 is composed in the exemplary embodiment shown of a plurality of slits 22 extending circumferentially at circumferential intervals and a plurality of webs 24 remaining between the slits 22. The tamper evident skirt 20 is connected to the main portion 18 by a plurality of bridges 24. Since the main body 4 itself has a well-known structure, detailed description of the main body 4 will be omitted in this specification.
Continuing with reference to fig. 1 and 2, liner 6 is comprised of a first layer 26 and a second layer 28. The first layer 26 is formed by press molding a synthetic resin material supplied to the inner surface of the top wall 8 of the main body 4. In more detail, the main body 4 is held in an inverted state on a holder (not shown), a synthetic resin material in a softened and molten state is supplied to the central portion of the top wall 8, and a press-molded article (not shown) of a desired shape is pressed against the synthetic resin material with a desired pressure to form the first layer 26. It is important that the first layer 26 be formed of a hard synthetic resin such as polyethylene or polypropylene which is excellent in gas barrier properties. The first layer 26, however, has a higher gas barrier than the second layer 28, which constitutes the sealing layer. The second layer 28 is formed by press molding the synthetic resin material supplied to the lower surface of the first layer 26. In more detail, the main body 4 formed with the first layer 26 is held in an inverted state on a holder (not shown), a synthetic resin material in a softened and molten state is supplied to a central portion of the first layer 26, and a mold-formed article (not shown) of a desired shape is pressed against the synthetic resin material at a desired pressure, thereby forming the second layer 28. It is important that the second layer 28 be formed of a flexible synthetic resin such as polyethylene or an elastomer excellent in sealability.
The first layer 26 has a circular central portion 30 extending along the inner surface of the top wall 8 of the body 4 and a circular peripheral edge portion 32 extending along the inner surface of the peripheral edge portion of the top wall 8 of the body 4 and the inner surface of the upper end portion of the skirt wall 10. It is important that there is an annular thickness variation region 34 in the central portion 30 (and therefore its lower surface extends obliquely upwardly in a radially outward direction) that gradually decreases in thickness radially outwardly, the outer peripheral edge of the thickness variation region 34 preferably being located adjacent to and radially inwardly of a later-described annular projection 40 of the second layer 28. The angle of inclination α of the lower surface of the thickness variation region 34 with respect to the horizontal plane is preferably 0.5 to 3.0 degrees. The first layer 26 has a greater wall thickness in the radially inner region of the peripheral edge portion 32 than in the radially outer region of the central portion 30, and a step s, preferably on the order of 0.05-0.40 mm, is present at the interface between the central portion 30 and the peripheral edge portion 32.
The second layer 28, which is laminated to the central portion 30 of the first layer 26, has a circular thin central portion 36 and a circular thick peripheral edge portion 38. In a radially inner region of the outer peripheral edge portion 38, there is an annular projection 40 projecting downward.
In the container lid 2 constructed according to the present invention, the thickness of the radially inner region of the outer peripheral edge portion 32 of the first layer 26 constituting the liner 6 is larger than the thickness of the radially outer region of the central portion 30, and a step s is present at the boundary between the central portion 30 and the outer peripheral edge portion 32. In other words, the wall thickness of the radially inner region of the outer peripheral edge portion 32 of the first layer 26 is relatively large. Thus, although the die-formed part acts on the radially inner region of the outer peripheral edge portion 32 of the first layer 26 during molding of the second layer 28, damage to the outer peripheral edge portion 32 of the first layer 26 therefrom is avoided as much as possible. The wall thickness of the radially outer region of the central portion 32 of the first layer 26 is relatively small, so the amount of synthetic resin material used to form the first layer 26 does not excessively increase. In a container lid 2 constructed in accordance with the present invention, there is also a region of varying thickness 34 in the central portion of the first layer 26 that tapers radially outwardly in thickness. The synthetic resin material flows sufficiently smoothly radially outwardly when the second layer 28 is to be press molded, with the result that the second layer 28 of the desired shape can be formed sufficiently reliably.
Fig. 3 and 4 also show the mouth-and-neck portion 42 of a container to which the container cap 2 is adapted. The mouth-neck 42 of the container, which has a shape well known per se and is formed of a suitable thin metal plate such as chromic acid treated steel sheet, tinplate or aluminum base alloy sheet, is generally cylindrical in shape as a whole and is formed with an outward bead 44 at an upper end portion where the outer dimension gradually decreases upward. A male thread 46 and a locking claw 48 located below the male thread 46 are formed in the outer peripheral surface of the main portion of the mouth-and-neck portion 42.
When the container lid 2 is attached to the mouth-and-neck portion 42 of the container to seal the mouth-and-neck portion 42, the container lid 2 is fitted to the mouth-and-neck portion 42 and pressed downward to bring the second layer 28 of the liner 6 into close contact with the top of the mouth-and-neck portion 42, specifically, the outer peripheral surface of the annular protrusion 40 of the second layer 28 and the lower surface of the radially outer region of the thick-walled outer peripheral edge portion 38 located radially outward of the annular protrusion 40 are brought into close contact with the upper end of the inner peripheral surface of the outward bead 44 of the mouth-and-neck portion 42 to the upper surface. While this state is maintained, the peripheral edge portion of the top wall 8 of the main body 2 and the upper end portion of the skirt wall 10 are deformed into the shapes shown in fig. 3 and 4. As a result, the outer peripheral surface of the annular projection 40 of the second layer 28 of the inner liner 6 closely contacts the inner peripheral surface upper end portion of the outward bead 34, and the lower surface of the radially outer region of the thick-walled outer peripheral edge portion 38 located radially outward of the annular projection 40 closely contacts the upper surface to the outer peripheral surface of the outward bead 44. Further, the main portion 18 of the skirt wall 10 of the body 2 is deformed along the male thread 46 formed in the mouth-and-neck portion 42 of the container to form a female thread, while the lower end portion of the tamper evident skirt 20 in the skirt wall 10 of the body 2 is deformed radially inward and locked to the locking claw 48 in the mouth-and-neck portion 42 of the container.
When the closure neck 42 is unsealed to consume the container contents, the skirt wall 8 of the body 4 is pinched by fingers to rotate the container lid 2 in the opening direction, i.e., in the counterclockwise direction when viewed from above in fig. 3. By so doing, the female thread formed in the main portion 18 of the skirt wall 10 moves along the male thread 46 of the mouth-and-neck portion 42, and thus the container cap 2 moves upward with respect to the mouth-and-neck portion 42. On the other hand, the lower end portion of the tamper evident skirt 20 of the skirt wall 10 has been prevented from moving up by the locking claws 48 of the mouth-and-neck portion 42. Therefore, stress is generated at the circumferentially breakable line 16 formed in the skirt wall 10 at the bridge 24, whereby the bridge 24 is broken. Then, leaving the tamper evident skirt 20, the container cap 2 moves up while rotating to be detached from the mouth-and-neck portion 42, whereby the mouth-and-neck portion 42 is unsealed.
