Description
Technical Field
The application belongs to the field of medical instruments, relates to an external ear shaper, and particularly relates to a left-right ear universal external ear shaper.
Background
Congenital external ear deformity of neonates is common craniomaxillofacial deformity in the fields of pediatric plastic surgery and five sense organs, has great negative influence on psychological development of the neonates, and can also enable parents to spell for a long time. The outer ear deformity is mostly caused by congenital causes, such as genetics; the mother is infected with syphilis, viruses, particularly rubella viruses during pregnancy; pregnant women take certain medicines or suffer from metabolic and endocrine disorders and other diseases, or contact certain chemical substances and radioactive rays and the like, which can lead to malformation of fetal ear development. The malformation of the external ear caused by congenital causes is often not simply malformation of auricles, but is accompanied by abnormalities of external auditory meatus, middle ear and other structures. Acquired factors such as auricle trauma, infection and the like can also cause serious auricle deformity, and some can be complicated with external auditory meatus stenosis or occlusion, but the auricle deformity is not generally accompanied. The treatment of the outer ear deformity generally can only wait for the child to age 5 years, and after comprehensive evaluation by doctors in the professional field, the outer ear is subjected to surgical remodeling and reconstruction treatment after the surgical conditions are met. However, such procedures are generally costly and the patient suffers from significant pain. Meanwhile, complications such as cartilage deformation, high recurrence rate, large wound and the like exist in the operation treatment, the comprehensive evaluation risk is high, and the possibility of postoperative recurrence exists in some patients.
In recent years, a shaping conservation therapy without surgery is developed, and the shaping conservation therapy is mainly corrected by means of an external ear shaper, for example, a shaping device for ear deformity therapy is disclosed in Chinese patent 200880108740. X; chinese patent 201320368369.9 discloses an external ear correction support; chinese patent 201410159263.7 discloses an ear orthosis with acupoint stimulation function; chinese patent 201620930313.1 discloses an ear orthosis which can effectively correct ear deformities by long-term wear by a patient. However, these external ear shapers are devices that clearly distinguish between left and right ear types, as the inner ring shape, which defines the base or seat, is to conform to the anatomical shape of the ear (left or right). It is known that left and right ear orthoses cannot be worn in reverse or otherwise cannot be used. The price of the external ear shaper sold in the market at present is high, and the selling price of one pair is as high as nearly 2 ten thousand Yuan people's coins. Because the shapes of the left ear type and the right ear type are similar in package, suppliers, family members of patients and medical staff are not easy to distinguish, the left ear type or the right ear type orthosis is often carelessly sold to the family members of the patients, great trouble is brought to the family members of the patients and the medical staff, reputation of the suppliers and the hospitals is seriously damaged, and doctor-patient disputes are easily caused. Now, through our technical innovation, a universal orthosis for left and right ears can treat two ears (for example, the left and right ears of a patient are malformed), thus greatly reducing the economic burden of the family of the patient.
Disclosure of Invention
In order to solve the problems of the external ear shaper in the prior art, a brand new design is carried out on the structure of the external ear shaper, and the external ear shaper with general left and right ears is provided, so that the problems of doctor-patient disputes and the like caused by high price, easy confusion of left and right ears and incapability of using the external ear shaper are solved. Specifically, the application comprises the following technical scheme.
A left and right ear universal external ear shaper, comprising: an arcuate base having arcuate sections (e.g., an arcuate base generally having the letter "C" or "G" shape), or an annular base generally having the letter "D" shape; a left ear type positioning cover with a contour matched with the base and provided with ventilation holes; a right ear type positioning cover with a contour matched with the base and provided with ventilation holes; one or more shaping components of an auricle traction hook, an upper wing (or an upper foot) shaping strip and a concha shaping buckle, wherein
The outer side edge and the inner side edge of the base are approximately parallel, outer grooves are continuously embedded in the base along the outer side edge symmetrically on the front side and the back side so as to form outer walls with uniform thickness, inner grooves are continuously embedded in the base along the inner side edge symmetrically on the front side and the back side so as to form inner walls with uniform thickness, and ridges with uniform thickness are formed between the outer walls and the inner walls; and a plurality of ribs such as three or more, four or more, five or more, six or more, seven or more, or even eight or more ribs are provided in the outer groove at intervals, thereby forming a plurality of outer groove compartments (or positioning grooves for insertion fixation of the positioning pins on the positioning cover) such as four or more, five or more, six or more, seven or more, eight or even nine or more outer groove compartments, and a plurality of ribs such as three or more, four or more, five or more, six or more, seven or more, or even eight or more ribs are provided in the inner groove at intervals, thereby forming a plurality of inner groove compartments (or fixing grooves) such as four or more, five or more, six or more, seven or more, eight or even nine or more inner groove compartments for insertion fixation of the hooks of the lugs on the nail-shaped buckle and/or the fixing pins on the wing-shaped strip;
the left ear type positioning cover and the right ear type positioning cover are collectively called a positioning cover, are respectively provided with more than two, such as three, four or five positioning feet, and are fixed with the corresponding outer groove compartments in a plugging manner through the positioning feet to form a left ear type shaper or a right ear type shaper respectively.
Preferably, the auricle traction hook is detachably mounted on the base and used for traction and positioning of the auricle edge; the upper wing (or the upper foot) shaping strip is detachably arranged on the base.
Because the base has a plane symmetry structure, the left ear type positioning cover and the right ear type positioning cover which are mutually symmetrical in structure are respectively combined with the base on the opposite two surfaces of the base, and the effect of 'left and right ear general type' of the base is achieved.
In use of the external ear shaper, the arcuate section of the base is placed outside the helix and the straight-sided section, such as the straight-sided section of the "G" shaped arcuate base or the "D" shaped annular base, is placed on the cheek side of the ear.
The base is preferably a generally "C" shaped arcuate base, or a generally "G" shaped arcuate base having an arcuate section and a straight edge section.
In one embodiment, the height of the ribs in the outer groove may be the same as or lower than the outer wall; the height of the ribs in the inner groove may be the same as or lower than the inner wall.
The height of the inner wall of the arc section can be smaller than the height of the outer wall, so that the positioning cover can be tightly jointed with the base after the auricle traction hook is buckled on the inner wall of the arc section and/or the fixing feet on the upper wing (or the upper foot) shaping strip are inserted into the inner groove compartment of the arc section, even if the positioning cover is in a flat plate shape design.
In one embodiment, the outer tank compartment and the inner tank compartment are partially or entirely provided in a permeable manner. For example, for the inner bath compartment for fixing the upper wing molding strip and the inner bath compartment for fixing the auricle traction hook, a through type is preferably adopted for easy installation. For outer and inner tank compartments that are not used, they may be non-permeable to facilitate reference positioning of the upper wing molding strip.
Preferably, the height of the outer wall is the same as the height of the ridge and the height of the inner wall of the straight section, so as to facilitate a sufficient bonding area of the base to the adhesive element, thereby ensuring that the base is firmly adhered to the skin of the patient.
In a preferred embodiment, the left and right ear universal external ear shaper further comprises a concha shaping sponge, the shape and size of which are matched with the bottom surface of the concha shaping button, and the concha shaping sponge is used for pushing the concha shaping button towards the concha cavity against the positioning cover.
Optionally, double-sided adhesive tapes are adhered to one side or both sides of the concha-shaping sponge, and are used for attaching the concha-shaping sponge to the bottom surface of the concha-shaping buckle or respectively attaching the concha-shaping sponge to the bottom surface of the concha-shaping buckle and the inner surface of the positioning cover.
Preferably, the base, the auricle traction hook, the upper wing shaping strip and the concha shaping buckle are made of elastic polymer materials such as silica gel, polypropylene or thermoplastic elastomer (TPE). Such elasticity enables on the one hand to maintain a desired shape stability of the external ear shaper and on the other hand to adapt the contour shape of the base to the shape of the root of the ear of the individual patient.
The auricle traction hook is used for correcting the collapse or the infrapture of the auricle and comprises a hanging lug and a hook piece, wherein the hanging lug is used for being hung and buckled on the inner wall, and the hook piece is used for grasping the edge of the auricle. Preferably, the auricle traction hook further comprises a built-in flexible metal skeleton, so that shape stability and shape plasticity are maintained.
The upper wing shaping strip is used for correcting deformities such as upper wing deficiency and antitragus deficiency and comprises a section of protruding part, a supporting bar for supporting the protruding part and fixing feet positioned at one end or two ends of the supporting bar, wherein the protruding part is used for upper wing shaping behind ears, and the fixing feet are used for being inserted into an inner groove compartment to fix the positions of the upper wing shaping strip. Preferably, the tab is integrally formed with the support bar.
The concha shaping buckle can be a group of round or U-shaped shaping pieces with small volume from small to large, is used for supporting and expanding the concha cavity, corrects deformities such as the too small concha cavity, and is provided with a waterproof ventilation groove.
In a preferred embodiment, the left and right ear universal external ear shaper further comprises an adhesive element shaped and sized to match the base for adhering the base to the skin of the patient.
The adhesive element is a double-sided adhesive sheet having adhesive layers on both sides.
In order to improve the adhesion firmness of the base to the skin, an adhesive fixing plate can be additionally arranged on the base, one surface of the adhesive fixing plate is used for adhering the adhesive element, and the other surface of the adhesive fixing plate is mechanically fixed with the base. The adhesive fixing plate has a shape and size matching those of the base, and is also classified into a left-ear type adhesive fixing plate and a right-ear type adhesive fixing plate.
The adhesive fixing plate can be fixed with the base through a plurality of positioning pins. More than two, such as three, four or five positioning feet are arranged near the edge part, and the fixation of the adhesive fixing plate and the base can be completed after the positioning feet are inserted into the outer groove compartments corresponding to the positions.
Preferably, the base, the left ear positioning cover, the right ear positioning cover, the helix traction hook body, the upper wing molding strip and the concha molding buckle are made of the same or similar materials, such as elastic polymer materials, for example, silica gel, polypropylene or thermoplastic elastomer (TPE).
Compared with the prior art that a pair of bases are designed into a left ear base and a right ear base respectively, the left ear universal shaper is formed by changing the bases into a structure with two symmetrical sides, and carefully distinguishing whether the bases belong to a left ear type or a right ear type and combining a left ear type positioning cover and a right ear type positioning cover. The left-right ear universal type external ear shaper provided by the application not only can achieve a treatment effect, but also overcomes the defect that the left ear type and the right ear type are easy to mix and cannot be used, remarkably reduces the economic burden of family members of patients, brings great convenience to the family members of the patients, suppliers and hospitals, and can effectively prevent doctor-patient disputes.

Detailed Description
The technical scheme of the present application will be described below with reference to the accompanying drawings. It is apparent that the described examples are only some, but not all, embodiments of the application; and the structures shown in the drawings are merely schematic and do not represent a physical object. It is intended that all other embodiments obtained by those skilled in the art based on these embodiments of the present application fall within the scope of the present application.
As shown in fig. 1, the auricle of the ear has a very complex structure, which is composed of cartilage covered by the skin. An abnormality in one or more of these structures can cause deformation of the ear structure, causing the appearance of deformities in the different parts of the outer ear, manifested as "puckering", folding, collapsing, edge-rolling of the helix, etc. For these deformities, correction during the infant period is necessary, and adverse effects of surgery after adults can be largely avoided.
According to the application, the base is changed into the structure with the two symmetrical sides, and the need of carefully distinguishing whether one base belongs to the left ear type or the right ear type is eliminated. A base is combined with a left ear type positioning cover or a right ear type positioning cover respectively to form a left ear type external ear shaper or a right ear type external ear shaper respectively, so that the left ear and right ear universal shaper is formed. The universal left and right ears bring great convenience to the family members of the patients, suppliers and hospitals, greatly reduce the economic burden of the family members of the patients and effectively prevent medical and economic disputes.
It is easily understood by those skilled in the art that two bases may be simultaneously provided in a pair of outer ear shapers in order to simultaneously shape left and right, thereby simultaneously forming one left ear type outer ear shaper and one right ear type outer ear shaper.
The left-right ear universal type external ear shaper of the present application may include various types of corrective shaping members such as an auricle traction hook, an upper wing shaping bar, an antitragus shaping bar, a concha shaping buckle, etc., and the corrective shaping members may be used alone or in combination to achieve shaping effects against various deformities.
For simplicity of description, the "left and right ear universal type external ear shaper" is sometimes referred to herein simply as "external ear shaper", "ear shaper" or "shaper", which refer to the same meaning and may be used interchangeably.
The "left ear positioning cover" and the "right ear positioning cover" are sometimes collectively referred to herein as "positioning covers". For simplicity of description, the left ear positioning cover/right ear positioning cover, and the plug-in components on the adhesive securing plate that can be secured to the base outer channel compartment by plugging in are collectively referred to herein as "positioning feet". For the sake of distinction, the insertion part of the upper wing molding strip, in which one or both ends of the support bar are fixed to the base inner groove compartment by insertion, is called a "fixing leg".
The terms "front face" and "back face" herein mean two surfaces located above and below when the susceptor is placed on a flat plate, and are not an absolute concept. In the present application, two symmetry planes of the base are referred to. Correspondingly, the term "height" refers to a height on the normal of the plate.
Referring to fig. 2, 3, 4 and 5, the left-right ear general-purpose external ear shaper 1 of the present application mainly includes: a base 2 having an arcuate section 21; a left ear type positioning cover 3 with a contour matched with the base 2; a right ear type positioning cover 3' which is matched with the base in outline and symmetrical to the left ear type positioning cover 3 in shape; comprises one or more shaping components of an auricle traction hook 4, an upper wing (or an upper foot) shaping strip 5 and an concha shaping buckle 6. Because the base 2 has a plane symmetry structure, the left ear type positioning cover 3 or the right ear type positioning cover 3' with the structure symmetry are respectively combined with the base 2 on the opposite two surfaces of the same base 2, and the left ear type shaper 1 or the right ear type shaper 1 can be formed, thereby achieving the effect of ' left and right ear general type ' of the base 2. These components are described below, respectively.
Base 2
The base 2 may be an arcuate base, for example, an arcuate base 2 having a general letter "C" shape (as shown in FIG. 4); the arcuate base 2 (shown in fig. 2, 3) is generally letter "G" shaped and includes a straight edge section 22 in addition to the arcuate section 21. The base 2 may also be an annular base 2, generally in the shape of a letter "D" (as shown in fig. 5), comprising straight edge sections 22 in addition to arcuate sections 21. More preferably, the arc-shaped base 2 is substantially C-shaped, or the arc-shaped base 2 is substantially G-shaped.
The arcuate section 21 corresponds to the outside of the helix and the straight-sided section 22 corresponds to the cheek side of the ear. That is, when the external ear shaper 1 is used, the arc-shaped section 21 of the base 2 is placed outside the helix, and the straight-side section 22 such as the straight-side section 22 of the "G" shaped arc-shaped base or the "D" shaped annular base is placed on the cheek side of the ear.
The outer side edge and the inner side edge of the base 2 are substantially parallel, and an outer groove 23 is continuously embedded along the outer side edge symmetrically on the front and back sides of the base 2 to form an outer wall 24 with uniform thickness. An inner groove 26 is continuously embedded symmetrically along the inner edge on the front and back sides of the base 2 to form an inner wall 25 with uniform thickness, and a ridge 27 with uniform thickness is formed between the outer wall 24 and the inner wall 25. A plurality of ribs 231, for example, three or more, four or more, five or more, six or more, seven or more, or even eight or more ribs 231 are provided in the outer groove 23 at intervals, so that a plurality of outer groove compartments 232 (or positioning grooves 232), for example, four or more, five or more, six or more, seven or more, eight or more, or even nine or more outer groove compartments 232 are formed for insertion fixation of the positioning pins 31 on the positioning cover 3; a plurality of ribs 231, for example, three or more, four or more, five or more, six or more, seven or more, or even eight or more ribs 231 are provided in the inner groove 26 at intervals, so that a plurality of inner groove compartments 261 (or fixing grooves 261), for example, four or more, five or more, six or more, seven or more, eight or more, or even nine or more inner groove compartments 261 are formed for the hanging lugs 41 on the auricle-drawing hook 4 to hang and/or for the insertion and fixing of the fixing feet 53 on the upper wing shaping strip 5.
The outer groove compartment 232 (positioning groove 232) provided on the base 2 is positioned and sized to accommodate the positioning pin 31 of the positioning cover 3, and the base 2 and the positioning cover 3 are disassembled/assembled by the extraction/insertion of the positioning pin 31. The provision of the interior channel compartment 261 (fixed channel 261) on the base 2 provides the basis for the mounting, dismounting and positioning of the molding assembly, such as the upper wing molding strip 5 and the lugs 41 on the helix traction hook 4.
The height of the ribs 231 in the outer groove 23 may be the same as the outer wall 24 or may be lower than the outer wall 24; likewise, the height of the ribs 231 in the inner groove 26 may be the same as the inner wall 25 or may be lower than the inner wall 25.
The height of the inner wall 25 of the arcuate section 21 may be less than the height of the outer wall 24, as shown in fig. 2, 3 and 5, such that the positioning cover 3 can be tightly engaged with the base 2 after the auricle-towing hook 4 is hung on the inner wall 25 of the arcuate section 21 and/or the fixing leg 53 on the upper wing molding strip 5 is inserted into the inner groove compartment 261 of the arcuate section 21, even if the positioning cover 3 is of a generally flat plate-shaped design (see fig. 2 to 5).
The outer tank compartment 232 and the inner tank compartment 261 may be partially or fully provided as a pass-through. For example, for the inner groove compartment 261 for fixing the upper wing molding 5 and the inner groove compartment 261 for fixing the auricle traction hook 4, it is preferable that these compartments are permeable for easy installation. For the outer and inner tank compartments 232, 261, which are not used, they may be impermeable, which may also serve as reference positions to facilitate quick positioning of the upper wing molding strip 5.
The height of the outer wall 24 is preferably the same as the height of the ridge 27 and the height of the inner wall 25 of the straight edge section 22 to facilitate a sufficient bonding area of the base 2 to the adhesive element 7 described hereinafter to ensure a firm adhesion of the base 2 to the skin of a patient.
Positioning cover 3
Referring to fig. 2, the positioning cover 3 is a determining factor for parting the left and right ears of the external ear shaper 1. The outline of the positioning cover 3 is matched with the base 2, and the shape of the left ear type positioning cover 3 is symmetrical with that of the right ear type positioning cover 3'. Obviously, the left ear type positioning cover 3 and the base 2 are assembled together to form the left ear type external ear shaper 1; the right ear type positioning cover 3' is assembled with the base 2 to form the right ear type external ear shaper 1.
The left ear positioning cover 3 and the right ear positioning cover 3' are collectively referred to herein as positioning covers 3. The positioning cover 3 is provided with ventilation holes 32, and more than two, such as three, four or five positioning feet 31 are arranged on the inner surface near the edge, and the positioning feet 31 are used for being inserted and fixed with the outer groove compartments 232 corresponding to the positions.
Shaping assembly
The shaping component mainly comprises an auricle traction hook 4, an upper wing shaping strip 5 (the shaping strip 5 for short) and an concha shaping buckle 6. These shaping components may be used alone or in combination. For example, fig. 3, 4 and 5 show the case when two or more shaping components are used in combination.
As will be readily understood by those skilled in the art, since the left and right human ears are symmetrical and mirror images of each other, some of the above-described shaping members are arranged in pairs, and are classified into left and right ear types; because of the difference in ear sizes of infants, the shaping components can be configured into a group according to the sizes.
The auricle traction hook 4 is used for correcting the collapse of the auricle or the infrapture of the edge of the auricle, and comprises a hanging lug 41 and a hook piece 42, as shown in fig. 6 and 7, wherein the hanging lug 41 can be hung and buckled on the inner wall 25 of the base 2, and the hook piece 42 is used for grasping the edge of the auricle and carrying out outward traction. The auricle traction hooks 4 can be arranged in groups of different sizes for traction of the auricle edges at different locations. The auricle traction hook 4 preferably further comprises a built-in flexible metal skeleton (not shown) so as to maintain shape stability and shape plasticity.
The upper wing shaping strip 5 is used for correcting deformities such as upper wing deficiency and antitragus deficiency of the ear, and comprises a protruding part 51, a supporting strip 52 supporting the protruding part 51, and fixing feet 53 positioned at one end or both ends of the supporting strip 52, as shown in fig. 6 and 7, wherein the protruding part 51 is used for shaping upper wings (i.e. upper feet) behind the ear, and the fixing feet 53 are used for being inserted into an inner groove compartment 261 to fix the position of the upper wing shaping strip 5. Preferably, the tab 51 is integrally formed with the support band 52 and the securing leg 53.
It will be readily understood by those skilled in the art that the upper wing shaping strip 5 is mainly used for correcting the deformation of the ear structure caused by the lack of cartilage structure or insignificant characteristics of individual parts of the external ear, and is obviously not limited to correcting the deformity of the upper wing (upper foot), but is also suitable for correcting the deformity of other parts of the ear. In this case, the desired shaping effect is achieved by adjusting the shoring position or angle of the upper wing shaping strip 5 behind the ear, which can be achieved by changing the position of the inner groove compartment 261 into which the fixing feet 53 are inserted.
As shown in fig. 3, 5 and 7, the concha shaping buckle 6 may be a set of round or U-shaped shaping parts with small-to-large volume for supporting and expanding concha and correcting deformities such as too small concha cavity, and is provided with a waterproof ventilation groove 61. The bottom surface 62 of the concha-shaping clasp 6 may act against the inner surface of the positioning cap 3.
Adhesive element 7
The adhesive element 7 is used to adhere the base 2 to the skin, thereby securing the external ear shaper 1 to the external ear of the patient, whereby, referring to fig. 8, the shape and size of the adhesive element 7 matches the base 2.
In one embodiment, the adhesive element 7 is a double sided adhesive sheet having adhesive layers on both sides. Preferably, the adhesive layer is made of biocompatible materials which are non-irritating to human skin and do not cause skin allergy, for example, the material of the adhesive layer can be medical acrylate adhesive pressure-sensitive adhesive. In fig. 8, there is shown a double-sided adhesive sheet 7 covered with release paper on both sides, and when the adhesive member 7 is adhered to the base 2 and thus the rubberized base 2 is adhered to the skin of a patient, the adhesive fixation of the adhesive member 7 can be easily accomplished by gently tearing the release paper peeling end 71 and pressing it.
Adhesive fixing plate 8
In order to increase the adhesion firmness of the base 2 to the skin, an adhesive fixing plate 8 may be added to the base 2, wherein one surface of the adhesive fixing plate is used for adhering the adhesive element 7, and the other surface of the adhesive fixing plate is mechanically fixed with the base 2. Referring to fig. 2, 3, 4 and 5, the adhesive fixing plate 8 is shaped and sized to match the base 2, and is also divided into a left-ear adhesive fixing plate 8 and a right-ear adhesive fixing plate 8', which may be collectively referred to herein as the adhesive fixing plate 8.
As the positioning cover 3 is fixed to the base 2 by the plurality of positioning pins 31, the adhesive fixing plate 8 may be fixed to the base 2 by the plurality of positioning pins 81. For example, two or more, such as three, four or five positioning legs 81 are provided near the edge portion, and the fixing of the adhesive fixing plate 8 to the base 2 is completed after the positioning legs 81 are inserted into the corresponding outer slot compartments 232.
Preferably, the base 2, the positioning cover 3, the body of the auricle traction hook 4, the upper wing molding strip 5, the concha molding buckle 6 and the adhesive fixing plate 8 may be made of elastic polymer materials such as silicone, polypropylene or thermoplastic elastomer (TPE), and more preferably, the materials thereof are the same or similar. Such elasticity enables, on the one hand, the external ear shaper 1 to maintain a desired shape stability and, on the other hand, the contour shape of the base 2 to be adapted to the shape of the root of the ear of the individual patient.
Other auxiliary parts
In view of the different sizes of the concha of different patients, in order to fit the use of the concha-shaping clasp 6, the left and right ear-generic external ear shaper 1 of the present application may further comprise a concha-shaping sponge 9, which is sized to match the bottom surface 62 of the concha-shaping clasp 6, for pushing the concha-shaping clasp 6 towards the concha cavity, for example, it may be cylindrical, as shown in fig. 6.
Double-sided adhesive tape can be adhered to one side or both sides of the concha-shaping sponge 9, and is used for attaching the concha-shaping sponge 9 to the bottom surface 62 of the concha-shaping buckle 6 or respectively attaching to the bottom surface 62 of the concha-shaping buckle and the inner surface of the positioning cover 3.
By means of various combinations of the above components, a left ear type outer ear shaper 1 or a right ear type outer ear shaper 1 can be conveniently assembled, so that the economic burden of the family of the patient is remarkably reduced, and the left and right ear orthoses are not required to be mixed, and the family, suppliers and hospitals of the patient are prevented from being busy or various disputes are avoided. The assembled external ear shaper 1 can effectively correct various external ear deformities without being separated from the left and right.
