Abstract

Within the main vessel used for prepn of the culture is a rotor with a spiral surface based on winding sheet material about the horizontal shaft so that there is a constant gap between adjacent turns and then by enclosing the ends between cheeks with holes at the radius of the inmost layer. The shaft is esp. hollow with pipework for circulating heating or cooling media and is driven from outside the vessel at variable speed and direction the shaft gland being a sterile seal. The material of the spiral may be plastic, esp. polycarbonate, silicate glass or steel covered with glass enamel. Alternatively the rotor may consist of a number of spiral coils of glass tubing laid against each other and welded together. Ease of sterilization between batches and of maintaining sterility.

Description

The invention relates to a further embodiment of the device described in claim II of the main patent, which consists of a spirally wound surface which can be rotated about its horizontal axis in a container. It has been shown that the Monolayen> -layers aimed at for cell growth, i.e. skin-like cultures consisting of only one layer of cells do not grow on any surface. Glass has proven itself, but it is difficult to bring the required spiral shape. Organic plastics that are physiologically sound, e.g. Polyfluoroethylene must first be prepared for this purpose through a special surface treatment in order to enable the cell culture to adhere sufficiently.

The object of the additional invention is that in a device according to claim II of the main patent, the spirally wound surface consists of polycarbonate and is installed in a horizontal container.

This plastic has a smooth surface, which is necessary for the required cleaning, on the other hand the desired property, similar to glass, of offering the growing tissue cells sufficient adhesion so that the cell culture grows in one layer

   PATENT CLAIM
Device for culturing tissue cells and microorganisms on a spiral wound surface which is rotatably arranged in a container about its horizontal axis, according to claim II of the main patent, characterized in that the spirally wound surface consists of polycarbonate and is built into a horizontal container.
