Abstract
Le virus respiratoire syncytial est un virus de rhume commun appartenant à la famille des paramixovirus. Le VRS est virulent, facilement transmissible et constitue la cause la plus courante de maladie des voies respiratoires inférieures chez les enfants de moins de 2 ans. Jusqu'à 98 % des enfants recevant des soins de jour vont être infectés en une seule saison de VRS. Entre 0,5 % et 3,2 % des enfants ayant contracté d'une infection par le VRS doivent être hospitalisés. Environ 90 000 admissions à l'hôpital et 4500 décès par an ont été rapportés aux Etats Unis. Les facteurs de risque majeurs pour l'hospitalisation due au VRS sont la naissance prématurée, une maladie pulmonaire chronique, une maladie cardiaque congénitale, un système immunitaire affaibli et un âge inférieur à 6 semaines chez des enfants par ailleurs sains.
