Abstract
A portable high volume solar water pump has been developed by using a solar panel attached to one of two separate high impact composite or plastic supports that are positioned on the ground and connected by an angle adjustment link. The system provides flexibility such that the angle of the panel can be adjusted for maximum power production. The panel is attached by two lead wires and a switch mechanism to a high volume direct current water pump that can continuously pump water while powered by the panel. The pump is attached to standard garden hoses. The inflow hose is placed in a water source and the pump provides adequate lift to draw water. The pumping system is portable as the two supports collapse with the solar panel between them, this offers transport protection for the panel. The pump and all associated equipment are also stored in the supports for transport purposes.
This invention provides a means to pump significant volumes of water using a portable pump that is powered by solar energy.

Patent Application Clifford Portable High Volume Solar Powered Water Pumping System Cole Clifford, Curtis Clifford Background of Invention The ability to use solar energy has been growing in popularity as an alternate means of providing energy in remote regions or developing countries around the world.
The term water pump refers to the ability to move water from a source across substantial distances or elevations. Many of the previously created inventions use a battery system to provide pumping capacity when solar power is not available. This invention uses stored water at elevation to provide capacity when solar power is not available. Another invention as a result of the search is noted below.
Battery Operated Solar Charged Pump Kit Utilizing an Inline Submersible Pump Patent #2820647 Owner: Xylem IP Holdings Inventors: Irving, Michael Howard and Shopperle, Jeffery Brian This application noted above is a small scale application with low volume output and employs a battery as the main power source for non-daylight production.
Summary of Invention This unit consists of four major components. The solar panel is affixed to a composite collapsible panel that has a pivot point at one end. The composite or plastic panels can be rotated 360 degrees such that when closed the composite material protects the solar panel from both sides and ends. When open the composite or plastic material creates a triangle that will support the solar panel and allow for complete degree adjustment in order to align with the sun's current angle to maximize solar generation. The structure when open and in operating mode is supported by a wire link that ensures the system does not collapse due to wind or weather and allows for maximum exposure adjustment.
The solar panel is connected by two standard lead wires to a 12 volt direct current water pump.
This pump is a self-priming, dry-running to ensure that start and stop due to interruption of the power supply does not present any specific issues. The pump is manufactured of corrosive resistant materials and has a sealed motor such that it can tolerate outdoor weather and related elements. The pump is stored within the composite frame for shipping purposes.
The pump and power generation system is connected to a water source and a water storage vessel by standard garden hoses. The storage vessel allows for storage of water at elevation for use during periods of no sun or at night and thereby eliminating the need for any battery power Wage for the system. These storage vessels are light and portage as they are manufactured from a canvas, synthetic cloth material or plastic that is supported by a light weight frame. This system of storage allows for maximum portability for shipping and transit Fig. 1 is a pictorial view of solar panel, pump and related wiring in the transit mode.
Fig. 2 is a view of the system in production mode with all components functioning Fig. 3 is an overall view of the system layout with storage at elevation irrigation application Fig.4 is an overall view of the system layout with storage in a residential application The ability to harness the generation of solar power for remote applications has been an area that has developed over the past several years as the cost of generation has declined. Solar panels by their nature are heavy and are subject to damage during shipping unless adequately protected. As a result most of the applications developed are small low volume or are fixed mounted applications.
Detailed Description of Invention The specific advantage to this high volume solar powered water pumping system is its portability and that it requires no heavy battery back up to provide water during times of no sun or at night. The system is fully expandable such that multiple pumps can be used to span larger distances or greater elevations thereby not limiting the application.
The solar panel is a 100 watt crystalline solar panel or similar that produces approximately 6 amps at 17 volts or greater. The panel has a rugged aluminum frame and is weather proof. The panel is attached to the composite frame material using flexible ties that allow for removal of the solar panel if required.
The frame material used to support the solar panel during transit and during operations is comprised of a composite or plastic material that is both light and strong.
The two separate support members are hinged such that they can pivot at one end a full 360 degrees. This pivot point permits the panels to collapse and thereby protect both sides of the solar panel during 3 1Page transit and be latched in that position. In the transit mode prior to latching the panels at each end, the pump and related wiring is placed in a holder within the composite material; this allows all of the components to be contained within the panel and therefore protected during transport.
In the production mode the panels are rotated into the shape of a triangle that allows the solar panels to approach the sun at the most appropriate angle. The support panels in production mode are connected mid-way by a wire link that supports the exact angle desired while ensuring that the system does not collapse on itself during operation.
= The pump is a self-priming, dry-running sealed motor, 12 volt direct current water pump. The pump has an amperage draw of 4 amps at zero PSI and 7 amps at 30 PSI or greater. The flow rate of this pump is approximately 3.0 gallons per minute or 11.36 litres per minute or greater.
The pump is connected by a quick connector to the lead wires from the solar panel. The lead wires contain a standard on/off switch that permits assembly and power off for maintenance and other servicing requirements. The pump is connected to a standard garden hose for both input and output applications. The input is placed in a water source, while the output is placed in the water storage vessel.
The water storage vessel is comprised of a canvas, nylon or plastic bladder supported by a light weight frame. The storage vessel may also be other types of water containers based on the specific application employed. The output hose from the pump is inserted into the water storage vessel and used to fill the tank to capacity during the daylight hours; then a separate exit from the storage container is used to release water as required using gravity pressure to move the water as required. The number of storage devices and pumps will be indicated by the vertical lift desired or distance required. The systems can be arranged in series in order to accomplish greater vertical lift or move water greater distances.
