Abstract
An impedance feedback electro-surgical system is useful with electro-surgical tools to maintain a preselected control range of tissue impedance within the tissue in contact with the tool. The system comprises an active electrode associated with an electro-surgical tool, a return electrode, in the form of a remote ground pad which is in contact with the patient, an impedance monitoring device and a power control unit. Energy sufficient to affect tissue is delivered through the active electrode to tissue and to the return electrode. The impedance measuring device determines the impedance of the tissue based on the voltage differential between the active electrode and ground pad. A signal representative of the measured impedance is communicated to the power control unit which adjusts the energy applied to the tissue to maintain a preselected impedance range.
Claims (6)
1. Use of a tool for controlling electrosurgical energy applied to tissue, said tool having an active contacting electrode in electrical communication with a power source and a remote contacting ground pad serving as a return electrode, said use comprising:
providing electrosurgical energy through the active electrode at a pre-selected magnitude;
communicating the electrosurgical energy applied to tissue through the return electrode to an impedance measuring device;
determining the impedance of the tissue from the voltage across the active electrode and the remote ground pad and from the current through the tissue;
communicating a signal representative of tissue impedance to a power control unit; and controlling the electrosurgical energy delivered through the active electrode based on the determined tissue impedance to maintain a determined tissue impedance within a preselected control range of tissue impedance.
providing electrosurgical energy through the active electrode at a pre-selected magnitude;
communicating the electrosurgical energy applied to tissue through the return electrode to an impedance measuring device;
determining the impedance of the tissue from the voltage across the active electrode and the remote ground pad and from the current through the tissue;
communicating a signal representative of tissue impedance to a power control unit; and controlling the electrosurgical energy delivered through the active electrode based on the determined tissue impedance to maintain a determined tissue impedance within a preselected control range of tissue impedance.
2. The use of the tool as recited in claim 1 wherein the preselected control range of tissue impedance is in the range of 20 to 2000 Ohms.
3. The use of the tool as recited in claim 1 wherein the step of controlling the electrosurgical energy comprises the step of varying the voltage across the electrodes.
4. The use of the tool as recited in claim 1, further comprising the step of determining at least one of the following properties of the system (i) the time-rate derivative of the signal representative of impedance, (ii) the time-average of the voltage, (iii) the time-average of the current, )iv) the time-average of impedance, (v) current which exceeds a predetermined current threshold, and (vi) voltage which exceeds a predetermined voltage threshold.
5. The use of the tool as recited in claim 4, further comprising the step of processing any of the properties selectively to evaluate electrosurgical effects in the tissue and activating at least one logic indicator to indicate the evaluated effects.
6. The use of the tool as recite in claim 5 wherein the at least one logic indicator generates a visible light, audible sound, or tactile sensation.
