Abstract
A device for securing a plurality of skis or snowboards with an overhead canopy that may be used for advertising is provided. The skis or snowboards are secured by a coin-operated locking mechanism to prevent theft. A canopy rests at the top of the rack to shield the secured equipment from the elements, to act as an easy identifier for locating ones equipment, and for using as advertisement.
Description
Field of the Invention This invention deals with skis, and the securing and protecting of the skis in a ski rack, while at the same time, protecting the user from the elements with a form of canopy.
Background of the Invention There currently exist several devices for storing or securing skis or snowboards.
However, each of these has its own various drawbacks.
A type of coin operated locking device used in this invention has already been disclosed in various patents, such as US 4,828,098, where the user inserts a coin or token, and then is able to use a key to lock their belongings in place.
There also exists a plurality of patents such as US 4,062,453, where the securing mechanism can be used in multiple rows, to form a ski rack. This rack does secure a pair of skis, however, there is no form of advertisement, or any type of feature to distinguish one ski rack from another.
US 5,472,101, discloses a ski rack that may include a banner for advertising.
However, in this rack, the banner is not at a very significant height to be seen from a distance. So, if one was using the banner to identify which rack they have placed their skis on, it would be difficult to locate it. As well, ski racks are out in the open, in the elements, but there is no protection with that rack from any type of harsh winter weather that is often found wherever there is skiing.
The need still remains for a form of canopy attachment to a ski rack, to not only securE:
the equipment from loss, damage, or theft, but also to protect the equipment from the weather, as well as the user themselves when they are placing or removing their equipment on the rack.
Another feature of the canopy is that it is at a significant height, it may be seen from a distance, so the user would have no trouble at all distinguishing which rack their skis are located on. A
further benefit of the invention is that the key which opens the rack contains an identifier or advertisement which matches the banner on the rack. This forces the user to not only look at, but also to remember the advertisement, so they may find their equipment.
Summaryr of the Invention In the preferred embodiment of the invention there is a rack for securing a plurality of skis or snowboards, comprising a pair of vertical posts, a support at the base of each vertical post a horizontal beam extending between the vertical posts spaced a desired height from the;
ground, a plurality of securing means along at least one side of the horizontal beam, and a canopy mounted to the posts over the beam. In this embodiment the canopy includes an advertisement, as well, the canopy comprises a frame and at least one flexible sheet on the frame bearing the advertisement. Also, each sheet is removable, and each sheet is attached to the frame by securing means. In this one embodiment, the securing means comprises a plurality of grommets around the perimeter of each sheet and tying means, where the tying means comprises bungy cord, or the tying means comprises ropes. The securing means mentioned earlier comprises a locking device, where the locking device is actuated by mean, of a key, a coin, a token, or any combination thereof. As well, in this preferred embodiment, the horizontal beam mentioned earlier is hollow. When the canopy includes an advertisement, and the securing means comprises a locking device which is actuated by a key, the key comprises means for identifying the rack, wherein the means for identifying the rack is an advertisement.
In this apparatus the locking device may be actuated by a coin or token as well as the key.
In a separate embodiment of the invention, there is a rack for securing a plurality of skis or snowboards, comprising a pair of vertical posts, a support at the base of each vertical post, a hollow horizontal beam extending between the vertical posts spaced at a desired height from the ground, a plurality of securing means along at least one side of the horizontal beam, and the securing means comprises a locking device. In this embodiment the locking device is actuated by means of a key, a coin, a token, or any combination thereof.

Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiment The preferred embodiment of the invention is shown in Fig 1-3 of the drawings.
Ski rack is composed of two vertical posts 12 which had supports 14 at the base of them. Extending between the posts 12 is a horizontal beam 16. The rack 10 may be constructed with beam 16 at a desired height, depending on the size of the skis the rack 10 is meant to hold (ie. if the rack 10 was meant for children's skis, the beam 16 would be at a lower height than if the rack 10 was for adults).
Along the horizontal beam 16, are a plurality of securing means 18 which comprise a locking device 26 (Shown clearly in Fig 8). In this preferred embodiment, the securing means _~ .-.__.._CA 02486284 2004-10-29.-....
18 are along both sides of horizontal beam 16. However, they may only be provided along one side of the beam 18 if, for example, one might want to position the rack 10 against a wall.
Mounted across the top of the vertical posts 12 is a canopy 20. This canopy 20 is made of a canopy frame 22 and a flexible sheet 24 (shown in Fig 7) which may contain some form of advertising. In the preferred embodiment, the means for opening the locking device 26, is a key (not shown), where the key chain (not shown) for the key contains a separate advertisement, which is identical to the advertisement on the sheet 24. This causes the user to look at the sheet 24 and remember the advertisement for when searching for the appropriate:
rack 10 among a plurality of racks.
Fig 4-6 shown in closer detail how the frame 22 is attached to the top of the posts 12.
At the very top of each post 12 a curved metal bar 28 (Fig 5) is attached over top of the canopy frame's top bar 30. The rest of the canopy frame 22 is comprised of two angled bars 32 at each end which extend down, and then travel along the side bar 34 across to the other vertical post 12. At a point along the angled bar 32, end bar 36 extends across to the other angled bar 3:?, so that at each end, the canopy frame 22 looks similar to the letter "A". This end bar 36 is secured to the vertical post 12 by a curved slot 38, which the end bar 36 rests in. This curved slot 38 is attached to the post 12 by a plurality of screws 40.
Removably attached to the canopy frame 22 is the flexible sheet 24, as seen in Fig 7.
Surrounding the perimeter of the sheet 24 is a plurality of grommets 42. When two sheets 24 are attached to each side of the frame 22, a rope or bungy cord 44 maybe be used to firmly secure the sheet 24 to the frame 22, and the rest of the rack 10.
The above described embodiment is the preferred embodiment, however, other possibilities can occur. Another possible embodiment (not shown) is one where the rack would be rested up against the wall, as mentioned above, with locking devices along one side of the horizontal beam. For this, the canopy frame would be shaped differently. The angled bar would only extend in one direction down from the top of the post, so that only a single sheet would be placed on the canopy.
Other changes or modifications may be made without departed from the spirit of the intended invention.
