Abstract

An improved bedding set design specifically arranged for cribs, for safely maintaining continued coverage of a sleeping baby / toddler in which a rectangular contoured mattress cover, a cover sheet and a covering with a large cut can be secured under the mattress with releasable fasteners which are provided on the outer surface of the bottom sheet which cooperate with releasable fasteners adjacent the margins of the inner surfaces of the top sheet and blanket and / or comforter.
One variation to this invention is that the top sheet could also be sewn to the blanket or comforter, so the baby is tucked with only one light, but warm rectangular insulating covering.
The sheets and coverings could also fit in a toddler bed that uses a standard crib mattress.
The bedding set design also includes an inventive and decorative arrangement in which a standard bumper pad is permanently sewn to a rectangular fabric band that replaces the conventional dust ruffle. The width of the band is such that top and bottom edge portions of the panel will extend from the bottom edge of the bumper pad to the bottom edge of the crib's frame.
Another variation to this invention is that the decorative skirt is attached to the bumper pad, for covering at least part of a central portion of the band extending over the mattress foundation sidewalls, and at least part of the space between the mattress foundation and a supporting floor surface.
The conventional strips sewn to the bumper pad that are tied to the railings of the crib will include detachable fasteners for easier and faster access when placing the front crib door down or up.

Description

IMPROVED BEDDING SET DESIGN FOR CRIBS
Field of the Invention This invention broadly relates to an improved bedding set design particularly for cribs. The invention provides a design in which certain of the crib clothes have elastic, a larger cut than conventional ones for comfortably fitting them under the mattress, and a design in which certain crib clothes remain attached to each other with releasable fasteners so as to prevent the baby/toddler from becoming uncovered or entangled within the crib clothes while providing the desired protection and comfort. The crib clothes could also fit in a toddler bed that uses a standard crib mattress.
The invention also relates to a standard bumper pad and an inventive ruffle skirt connected together for a decorative purpose, and for making a crib easily.
Conventional strips that are attached to the bumper pad will contain detachable fasteners for having faster access to the baby / toddler.
Prior Art Parents are primary concern for the comfort, warmth, safety and protection of a sleeping baby/toddler. One area of primary concern is the sleeping conditions provided to the infant. One important problem that an infant encounters is that babies change position while sleeping as so they risk striking the sides of the crib, becoming uncovered and/or entangled in any covering and/or padding provided within the crib. However, with respect to the other concerns, a parent may significantly reduce the risk of possible suffocation and/or injury resulting from a baby striking the sides of the crib, becoming uncovered and/or becoming entangled in any covering by keeping the baby in a secure sleeping position within that environment and frequently monitor the sleeping infant.
Another problem for parents is to install or remove a conventional crib dust ruffle.
It is necessary to remove the mattress from the foundation so that the top panel of the dust ruffle can be properly placed on the foundation with the ruffle skirt hanging downwardly to cover the foundation sides and the space there below. Dust ruffles are also subject to easy inadvertent displacement from their proper position, e.g., when the crib is made. The top panel lies loosely across the top of the mattress foundation such that it does not adequately prevent movement of the crib ruffle. When sheets and coverings are tucked between the mattress and the foundation, the ruffle skirt may be pulled up with a portion of them and being tucked under the mattress. Consequently, the crib maker has to readjust the dust ruffle.
The prior art contains various examples of bedding designs intended to keep an infant comfortable, warm, safe and covered. In the past, attempts to develop kick-off resistant infant blankets have yielded various methods of attaching a sheet or blanket to a crib mattress.
Examples of prior art designs are as follows:
Bergin, U.S Patent No. 2,677,137, issued May 1954, discloses a crib sheet combination in which the cover sheet and mattress cover are sewn together.
Fuld et al., U.S Patent No. 2,729,831, issued Jan. 1956, discloses a system for attaching a sheet or blanket to a crib mattress.
Hubner, U.S. Patent No. 3,845,513, issued Nov. 1974, discloses a fitted garment to be attached to a crib sheet and blanket.
Bilazich, U.S Patent No. 4,202,052, issued May 13, 1980, discloses a sleeper jacket attached to the crib sheet.
Mallet, U.S Patent No. 5,010,611, issued April 30, 1991, discloses a sheet and a bumper pad combination for use in a crib wherein the bumper pad is attached to the sheet.
Doran, et al., U.S Patent No. 5,014,376, issued May 14, 1991, discloses an apparatus for holding and supporting an infant.
Ohman, U.S Patent No. 5,153,954, issued October 13, 1992, and Canadian Patent No. 2,073,725, issued April 30, 1996, discloses a method of attaching a sheet or blanket to a crib bumper pad.
Wong, U.S. Patent No. 5,092,010, issued March 3, 1992, discloses bedclothes with fasteners to hold them in place and maintain a neat appearance of the bed.
Butler, U.S. Patent No. 5,551,108, issued September 3, 1996, discloses a combination of a portable baby cushion and a cover.
Hall, U.S. Patent No. 6,301,729, issued October 16, 2001, discloses a crib sack.
The sack acts as a blanket and also as a safety restraint keeping the infant securely in position.
Springs, Canadian Patent No. 910,516, issued September 19, 1972, discloses a bed sheet unit, a bottom and top sheet, which is quickly applied and removed from the mattress.
Etherington, Canadian Patent No. 1,330,602, issued July 5, 1994, discloses a fitted sheet having an elastic drawstring so that the fitted sheet can be located on any mattress within a range of nominal mattress sizes.
Lazar, Canadian Patent No. 2,094,936, filed Nov. 1, 1990, discloses a bedding system with fasteners.
The prior art contains various examples of bed ruffles intended to retain a decorative design securely on a mattress foundation such as crib frame or box spring.
Several attempts have been made to address these problems with varying degrees of success.
Examples of prior art designs are as follows:

Rocograndi, U.S. Patent No. 4,386,439, issued June 7, 1983, discloses a bedspread to permit fresh sheets and blanket to be fitted on the bed when the bedspread is removed.
Bible et al., U.S. Patent No. 5,271,112, issued December 21, 1993, and Canadian Patent No. 2,123,350, issued December 10, 1996, discloses a bed ruffle capable of installation on a box spring without removal of a mattress.
Hamilton, U.S. Patent No. 5,621,931, issued April 22, 1997, discloses a bed skirt assembly with releasable fasteners.
Masoncup, U.S. Patent No. 5,638,562, issued June 17, 1997, discloses a fitted bed sheet foundation and a dust ruffle for placement onto a mattress and around a box spring of a bed.
While these former concepts are efficient for overcoming some of the problems outlined previously, they continue to experience one or more difficulties.
A first difficulty linked with such efforts to prevent the afore-mentioned problems is that the movement of a sleeping babyltoddler increases the hardship for securing the coverings as necessary so he/she become entangled, irritated and uncovered at all times.
A second difficulty connected with such efforts to prevent the previous problems is that the movement of the front crib railing which can be placed in two or more different positions are difficult to manipulate since the bumper pads have fabric strips stitched to their outer surfaces which are tied to the crib bars for preventing the bumper pad to fall down or become entangled with the body of the baby.
A third difficulty associated with such efforts is that the crib dust ruffle that is bought today does not accomplish the role of a decorative design as it is expected to, for the dust ruffle does not cover the whole sidewalk of the mattress and foundation of a crib so the crib bedding arrangement look untidy with different colours on the crib sides.
Consequently, a potent need continues to exist for a bedding set design which is (i) efficient for maintaining sleeping babies/toddlers safe, warm and covered so as for reducing the chance of being entangled in the coverings within the ideal large cut, and detachable fasteners for having unruffled fit crib clothes, (ii) appropriate to incorporate, use and remove, a bumper pad and ruffle skirt in one piece so as to cover the sides of the mattress and the crib frame, to give the crib a better and more distinctive side look from the top edge of the bumper pad to the bottom edge of the ruffle skirt with j ust one neat design that can be seen from every corner of the crib, and (iii) favourable to incorporate, hook and loop tape on the several strips sewn on the upper edge of a bumper pad so as to untied the strips readily and faster, for washing the bumper pad easily when it is needed or placing the front railings of the crib at the level desired when is required or wished.

Summary of the Invention I have found that these disadvantages may be overcome by providing a bedding set design for cribs, 4 months and up it is the recommended age, effective for securely supporting coverage and warmth of babies/toddlers while sleeping with coverings that have larger cuts than conventional ones to fit the coverings under the mattress, including releasable fasteners such as hook and loop tape, because of the simplicity of the operation and lack of "metallic" components, for maintaining the coverings firmly in place on the mattress; a bumper pad and a ruffled skirt in one which provides a greater look -the sidewalk sheets are behind the dust ruffle-, permits the convenience of making the crib faster -without the inconvenient conventional dust ruffle-, and since the invention is one piece, it is easier to take the bumper pad/dust ruffle in one out to wash it and to put it back again -without having to take the mattress out of the crib to wash the dust ruffle like the existent one; and strips attached to the bumper pad with detachable fasteners for holding the bumper pad firmly in place onto the railings of the crib to easily and quickly put the front crib door down or up.
Due to this inventive design the infant could give a longer use of the crib, since the baby will be covered and warm as sleeping in a toddler or twin bed so the baby /
toddler could sleep in the crib until it is desired or needed.
The sheets and coverings could also fit in a toddler bed that uses a standard crib mattress.
In accordance with the present invention, a bedding set design for cribs efficient for safely maintaining coverage and warmth of babies/toddlers while sleeping, and for decorative purpose comprises:
- a rectangular fitted bottom sheet having a head end, a foot end, a first side and a second side, with a large cut for fitting the bottom sheet under the mattress, elasticized on every edge of the linen panel, including releasable fasteners attached to the outer surface on the first side, on the second side and on the foot end of the bottom sheet for attaching the fasteners to a top sheet;
- a rectangular flat top sheet for facilitating continued coverage of at least the lower body portions of a sleeping baby/toddler having a large cut for arranging the sheet under the mattress, including releasable fasteners attached to the inner and outer surface on the first side, on the second side and on the foot end of the top sheet for attaching the fasteners to the bottom sheet and to a covering, respectively;
- a rectangular covering for facilitating continued coverage of at least the lower body portions of a sleeping baby/toddler such as a blanket, quilt, comforter or crib cover having a large cut for arranging the said coverings under the mattress, including releasable fasteners attached to the inner surface on the first side, on the second side and on the foot end of the blanket, comforter, quilt, or crib cover for attaching the fasteners to the top sheet, - one variation to this invention is to have the top sheet sewn to the crib blanket so the baby/toddler has just one light and warm covering upon said baby/toddler in the cold season;
- releasable fasteners means on inwardly facing surfaces of the bottom sheet and coverings, and capable of cooperating with fasteners means positioned adjacent the margins of the outer surface of the said bottom sheet and top sheet, whereby the bottom sheet can be detachably secured to the top sheet, and the top sheet can be detachably secured to the blanket or comforter;
- a decorative design comprising a conventional bumper pad permanently connected together to a ruffle skirt, as one piece, which is a rectangular fabric band stitched to the inner surface or into the bumper pad that could replace the conventional dust ruffle, - first variation to this invention is that the width of the fabric band is such that top and bottom edge portions of the panel will extend from the bottom edge of the bumper pad to the bottom edge of the crib's frame, - second variation to this invention is that the decorative skin is attached to the bumper pad, for covering at least part of a central portion of the band extending over the mattress and foundation sidewalk, and at least part of the space between the mattress foundation and a supporting floor surface; and - conventional strips that are attached to the top edge of the bumper pad will include detachable fasteners to hold the bumper pad firmly in place on the railings of the crib so that the strips can be secured and/or unsecured with easier and faster access for placing the front crib door up or down to put the baby in the crib or to take the baby out of the crib when desired or needed.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the bedding set design along with a standard mattress;
Figure 2 is a duplicate of Figure 1 with portions thereof included for purposes of depicting additional components;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of one embodiment of the present invention illustrating the bedding set design in combination with a standard mattress and crib;
Figure 4 is a duplicate of Figure 3 with portions thereof included for purposes of depicting additional components; and Figure 5 is an exploded perspective view of a portion of a second embodiment of the present invention in combination with a standard crib.
Detailed Description The bedding set design is shown in Figures 1 to 5 as applied to a rectangular mattress M, pillow P, crib C which are conventional and not a part of this invention.
The first main component of this invention is the combination of a rectangular fitted bottom sheet 5 having a large cut 16, with elastic 6, and hook tape 1 for attachment to the top sheet 7; a rectangular flat top .sheet 7 having a large cut 17 and loop tape 2 for attachment to the bottom sheet 5 and a hook tape 3 for attachment to the covering 8; a covering 8 such as blanket, comforter, quilt, etc. having a large cut 18 with loop tape 4 for attachment to the top sheet 7 so that the coverings 5, 7 and 8, can be tucked under the mattress M around the perimeter of the crib C, and can be held in place.
The bedding set design illustrated in Figure 1 (a) and Figure 1 (b) comprises a perspective view of a mattress _M showing a rectangular fitted bottom sheet 5 having a main central panel, side edges and end edges that are joined together to define a perimeter with a large cut 16 (length: 180 cm, width: 120 cm, depth: 20 cm on 4 each corners of the sheet 5) to tuck the sheet 5 under the mattress M, having elastic 6 in at least a portion of the perimeter, on the corners of the sheet 5, to permit the sheet 5 to fit snugly around a mattress _M, including hook tape 1 attached to the outer surface on the front side edge, rear side edge and foot side edge of the bottom sheet 5 for attachment the hook tape 1 to the inner surface of a flat top sheet 7 to be described. The preferred material for the sheets is a polyester/cotton blend with 180 threads count or more.
In the embodiment shown in Figure 2 (a) there is a perspective view from the upper side of a mattress M showing a fitted bottom sheet 5, a pillow P, a flat top sheet 7 for coverage of at least the lower body portions of a sleeping baby / toddler, and a covering 8.
In Figure 2 (b) there is a perspective view from the lower side of a mattress _M
showing a pillow P; a fitted bottom sheet 5, previously described in Figure 1 (a) / (b); a flat top sheet 7 having a main central panel, side edges and end edges that are joined together to define a perimeter, with a large cut 17 (length: 120 cm, width:
140 cm) to tuck the top sheet 7 under the mattress M, including loop tape 2 attached to the inner surface on the front side edge, rear side edge and foot side edge of the top sheet 7 for attachment to the outer surfaces of the fitted bottom sheet 5, and hook tape 3 attached to the outer surface on the front side edge, rear side edge and foot side edge of the top sheet 7 for attachment to the inner surface on the front side edge, rear side edge and foot side edge of a covering 8, to be described.
In Figure 2 (c) there is a side view of a crib C showing a mattress M_, a pillow _P, a fitted bottom sheet 5, a flat top sheet 7, and a rectangular covering 8 such as blanket, comforter, etc. having a main central panel, side edges and end edges that are joined together to define a perimeter, with a large cut 18 (length: 120 cm, width:
140 cm) to tuck the covering 8 under the mattress M, including loop tape 4 attached to the inner surface on the front side edge, rear side edge and foot side edge of the covering 8 for attachment to the outer surface of the flat top sheet 5.
The covering 8 fits on the top part of the flat top sheet 7. The covering 7/8 will remain attached to the bottom sheet 5, so that little disarrangement of the crib occurs in normal use. When it is required to launder the sheets 5/7 or covering 8, these are removed from the fastening l, 2, 3 and 4, and replaced with fresh coverings.
Referring to Figures 2, 3, 4, a variation to this invention is to have the flat top sheet 7 sewn to the crib covering 8, to make one piece, the latter being permanently attached to the top sheet 7 by a seam along the head side edge, foot side edge, front side edge and rear side edge of the cover sheet 7.
The preferred material is flannelette and a fabric panel of the same size to be sewn together, which is light and warm, for the baby to be comfortable and warm, and for having the same design as the bumper pad 9 (a) and ruffle skirt in one 9 (b) /
11, to be described.
The hook portion 1 and 3 and the loop portion 2 and 4 of the hook and loop tape 1, 2, 3 and 4 are longitudinally spaced along the front side edge, the rear side edge and the foot side edge of the bottom sheet 5, the top sheet 7 and the covering 8.
The height of the sleeping space, between the bottom sheet 5 and the coverings and 8, will be loose for a baby / toddler to feel comfortable, once the hook portion l and 3 and the loop portion 2 and 4 of the hook and loop tape l, 2, 3 and 4 are fastening.
The hook portion 1, 3 and 14 and the loop portion 2, 4 and 15 of the hook and loop tape 1, 2, 3, 4, 14 and 15 are permanently attached to the coverings 5, 7 and 8, and to the strips 10 of the bumper pad 9 (a).
The hook portion 14 and the loop portion 15 of the hook and loop tape 14 and are permanently attached to the strips 10 of the bumper pad 9 (a), to be described.
The second important component of this invention is the combination of a standard bumper pad 9 (a) sewn to a rectangular fabric band 9 (b) / L 1 which replaces the conventional dust ruffle, since the bumper pad 9 (a) and the ruffle skirt form one piece.
This part of the invention has two different alternatives, which are:
The drawing in Figure 3 shows a standard bumper pad 9 (a) sewn to a rectangular fabric band 9 (b) in which the width of the fabric band 9 (b) is such that top and bottom edge portions of the panel will extend from the bottom edge of the bumper pad to the bottom edge of the crib's frame C.
The decorative straight or ruffle skirt 9 (b) in Figure 3 provides a front portion, a rear portion, a first side portion and a second side portion which is capable of draping down from the bottom edge of the bumper pad 9 (a) to the bottom edge of the crib's frame C, without having a top main panel.

g The measurements are: bumper pad 9 (a), (length: 405 cm, width: 23 cm), sewn to a rectangular fabric band 9 (b), (length: 405 cm, width: 31 cm, total width from the top edge of the bumper pad 9 (a) to the bottom edge of the ruffle skirt 9 (b): 54 cm).
The drawing in Figure 4 shows a standard bumper pad 9 (a) sewn to a rectangular fabric band 9 (b) / 11 in which the decorative ruffle skirt 9 (b) / 11 is attached to the bumper pad 9 (a), for covering at least part of a central portion of the band extending over the mattress and foundation sidewalls _M, and at least part of the space between the mattress foundation M and a supporting floor surface.
The decorative straight or ruffle skirt 9 (b) / 11 in Figure 4 is uninterrupted and wider than the width of the fabric band 9 (b) in Figure 3 so as to provide a front portion, a rear portion, a first side portion and a second side portion which is capable of descending from the bottom edge of the bumper pad 9 (a) to a nearly supporting floor surface, without having a top main panel.
The measurements are: bumper pad 9 (a), (length: 405 cm, width: 23 cm), sewn to a rectangular fabric band 9 (b), (length: 405 cm, width: 40 cm, total width from the top edge of the bumper pad 9 (a) to the bottom edge of the ruffle skirt 9 (b): 63 cm).
Figure 3 shows a perspective view of one embodiment of the present invention illustrating the bedding set design, previously described, in combination with a standard mattress _M, pillow P_ and crib C.
Figure 3 shows conventional strips 10 that are attached to the top edge of the bumper pad 9 (a) which include hook tape 14 and loop tape 15 to hold the bumper pad 9 (a) firmly in place on the railings R of the crib C.
Figure 4 shows a perspective view of the present invention illustrating the bedding set design, previously described, in combination with a standard mattress M, pillow _P and crib C.
Figure 4 also shows an alternative embodiment of the invention having another different feature from what is apparent from Figure 3. In place of the hook tape 14 and loop tape 1 S, snap type of fastening elements 12 (a) are used with corresponding fasteners 12 (b) on the inside surfaces of the bumper pad strips 10.
Figure 5 indicates an exploded perspective view of a standard crib C and railings R, showing a standard bumper pad 9 (a) sewn to a rectangular ruffle fabric band 9 (b), and conventional strips 10 that are sewn to the top edge of the bumper pad 9 (a) which include hook tape 14 and loop tape 15 to hold the bumper pad 9 (a) firmly in place on the railings _R of the crib C so that the strips 10 can be secured and/or unsecured with easier and faster access for placing the front crib door C up or down to put the baby in the crib C or to take the baby out of the crib C when desired or needed.
It is understood that the examples described above are not meant to limit the scope of the invention. It is expected that numerous variants will be obvious to the person skilled in the garment and linens manufacturing art, without any departure from the spirit of the present invention. The appended claims, properly construed, form the only limitation upon the scope of the present invention.
