Abstract
A garment hanger has appropriate structure thereon designed to mount a particular garment, which may take various forms. The hanger also has a hook or other suitable means for suspending the garment hanger with the garment mounted thereon. The hanger is arranged to receive, intermediate the garment mounting structure and the hook, a detachable generally flat plaque bearing size or other appropriate indicia by a push fit between interengageable means on the plaque and on the garment hanger.

GARMENT HANGERS
This invention relates to garment hangers.
Such hangers are manufactured in their millions for in-store display o~ clothing. The problems associated with re-use of such hangers have frequently resulted in them either being disposed of after a single use or of being given away to the customers purchasing the garments.
Because the margins in retailing are increasingly tight as a result of competition between garment retailers, there is a desire to be able readily to reuse garment hangers.
It is usual for stores to display garments of the same style and colour but of different sizes either on the same rail or on adjacent rails. Customers must be able readily to identify a garment of their appropriate size. The indication o~ the appropriate size is conveniently carried by the garment hanger since otherwise the customer must look inside individual garments to ascertain their size.
This leads to an untidy display and they o~ten result in garments slipping off the hangers. Many retailers choose garment hangers with circular square or oval plaque immediately beneath the hanging- hook but above the cross piece or other structure on which the garment is actually hung. To this plaque is adhered a label showing a particular size.
As can be appreciated, it is generally inconvenient to have to sort used garment hangers into the different sizes and then to mount the appropriate size labelled hanger to a new garment to be placed on display. The other alternative is to remove the label from the plaque and to stick a new label in place. Often the labels are difficult to detach. In any event, the procedure is time consuming and therefore labour and cost intensive.
Australian Patent AU-B-26077 describes a hanger with a plaque which bears size or other indicia, which consists of two flat discs, which may be hinged together, and which engage each other by means of one or more complementary pins and holes. The pins are held in position by means of CA 0222626~ 1998-Ol-o~
catch members protruding from the distal end of the pins.
Removal of the plaque requires the catch members be lifted to disengage them from the disc. A subsequent push to the pins then allows the plaque to be detached.
United States Patent 3,467,291 describes a method for attaching a hook to the body of a hanger. Lock nuts which hold the shank portion of the hook are hidden behind a closure plate which can bear size or other indicia, but the plate cannot be removed from the hanger once it is affixed.
The present invention addresses this problem and neatly provides a solution.
In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, we provide a garment hanger provided on a front side thereof with a detachable generally flat plaque, preferably made of plastics, bearing size or other appropriate indicia, the hanger comprising structure for mounting a garment thereon and a hook or like means for suspending the garment hanger with a garment mounted thereon; characterised in that the hanger comprises, intermediate the said structure and the hook or the like, one or more through holes formed in the body of the hanger, and in that the detachable plaque is provided with one or more posts extending therefrom, the post(s) being deformable for insertion into the hole(s) from the said front side of the hanger so that the plaque is mounted on the said front side with the or each post extending through a said hole from said front side of the hanger to a rear side thereof, so that a distal end of the post(s) protrude(s) from the said rear side and such that the plaque may be detached from the hanger merely by pressure applied from said rear side axially of said post(s) to said distal end(s).
In accordance with a second, and alternative, aspect of the invention, we provide a kit of parts comprising a garment hanger as defined in the preceding paragraph together with a plurality of detachable plaques as defined ~i~.. .. _ , J CA 0222626~ 1998-01-0~ --2a .
in the preceding paragraph bearing di~ering indicia, ~or example di~fering indications as to garment size.
In accordance with a third and alternative aspect of the invention, we provide a method of mounting a garment to a hanger for display for retail sale, the method comprising providing a garment hanger comprising structure for mounting the garment ~hereon, a hook or like means ~or suspending the garment hanger with the garment mounted thereon and, intermediate the said structure and the hook or the like, one or more through holes formed in and extending through the body of the hanger; mounting the garment on the garment hanger; and, either before or after so mounting the garment, selecting a detachable plaque which bears size or other appropriate indicia corresponding to the particular garment, the plaque being provided with one or more posts extending therefrom, the post(s) being deformable for insertion into the hole(s); and mounting the plaque onto a front side of the hanger by inserting the or each post into a said hole from the said front side of the hanger to a rear side thereof, such that a distal end of the post(s) protrude(s) from the said rear side and such that the plaque may be detached from the hanger merely by pressure applied from said rear side axially of said post(s) to said distal ends.
