Abstract

JBF144 The invention concerns a sheet folding device for a package producing folding and gluing machine. A sheet (1) is carried forward by a conveyor belt (4) in a direction parallel to a folding line (O1) predetermined by a crease. A second belt (6) having adopted a helical shape under the action of truncated rollers (7) exerts pressure onto the part or flap (1') to be folded under the action of the truncated rollers (7), and folds the said flap over in the direction of the remainder of the sheet (1). For varying the helical shape of the belt (6), the truncated rollers (7) with different angles are fitted for appropriate adjustment on the supports (7a, 20, 15, 30a) which are pivotable around the folding line (O1). (FIG. 3)

Description

1 - 68200~116 The present invention concerns a device for folding sheet or plate-shaped workpieces, used in a package producing folding and gluing machine.
- Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a prior art folding device according to CH-A-444650;
- Figure 2 is a lateral view extending along a folding device according to the invention;
- Figure 3 is a transverse view in the direction of arrow A of Figure 2; and - Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line D - ~ of Figure 1.
In the folding device of CH-A-444650 as represented by Figure 1 of the attached drawing, a sheet 1, for instance of corrugated board, is moved in the direction of the arrow 13 by means of at least a guiding lay 10 carried by a conveyor chain 11.
The sheet 1 (having the shape of a blank as ]cnown in the packaging industry) comprises a part having the shape of a lateral flap 1' which is to be folded in the direction of the arrow 2, i.e. along a line (not visible) predetermined by a crease and parallel to the direction of the arrow 13. Folding is achieved by means of a : straight edge 3a of a rigid ruler 3 extending in the direction of : the arrow 13, the edge 3a having the shape of a dihedral angle ; progress1vely diminishing so as to form an upper left-hand side against which the flap 1' is pressed when being folded. In order to compel the flap 1' to progressively fold in the direction of the remainder of the sheet 1, a first conveyor belt 4 running over 2 ~ ~

the pressing rollers 5 is to hold the sheet 1 against the lower plane side of the ruler 3. A second conveyor belt 6 undergoing the effect of the truncated rollers 7 holds the flap 1' against the left-hand side oE the ruler 3. The angle of the truncated rollers 7 varies from one roller to the other so as to be adapted to the inclination of the ruler 3 as the operation progresses. A third conveyor belt 8 undergoing the action of pressinq rollers 8' holds the edge of the progressive fold of the sheet 1 against the straight edge 3a of the ruler 3. The three conveyor belts 4, 6 r 8 are endless. As a rule, up to a bending angle of 90, i.e., the vertical position of the flap 1', folding is achieved by means of a plate of helical shape (not shown) supporting the lower side of the flap 1', and the travelling belt 6 is located between the helical guide and the flap 1'. Further on, i.e. from 90 to 180, folding of the flap 1' is done exclusively by the belt 6 adopting a helical shape under the action of the truncated rollers 7.
In reality, several truncated rollers 7 (only one being shown by Figure 1) are foreseen along the belt 6, the last ones 7' being cylindrical so as to be able to crease the fold.
The position of each of the various rollers 7, 7' is adjustable by means of a fixture 20 connected with their axle 7a and shiftable along a bar 15. However, such a way of fastening the rollers 7, 7' has the following drawbacks, i.e.:
- not allowing all the rollers 7, 7' to be simultaneously put in or out of operat~ion;
- not allowing the setting of the rollers 7, 7' in a sufficiently independent way with regard to one another; and - not allowing the angle at a given point situated on the folding track of the flap 1' to be modified in a single operation, on account of the constancy of helical folding.
Consequently, the present invention aims to provide a folding device ~in which the above-mentioned drawbacks would be eliminated.
~ he invention provides device for folding plate or sheet-shaped workpieces for a package producing folding and gluing machine comprising:
- means for carrying the sheets;
- means for folding a part or a flap of the sheet along the line predetermined and essentially parallel to the travelling direction of the sheet, the said folding means having the shape of a conveyor belt tra~elling helically under the action of at least two tapered rollers with variable angle and adjustable to the required position; and - means for fixing the tapered rollers in the required pOSitlQn, characterised by the fact that at least one roller is adjustable in a required position so that its line of contact with the folding belt pivots around the folding line.
:
Further features and advantages will reveal themselves in the embodiment described hereafter for better understanding, with reference to the attached drawings.
Figures 2 to ~ utilise identical reference numerals for , 2~1 - 3a - 68200-116 components similar to those of Figure 1. The purpose of these similar components, will be understood from the above description with reference to Figure 1.
In Figure 2, a conveyor belt 4 moves in the direction of the arrow 13 in order to ensure the conveyance of the sheets 1 (not represen~ed on Figure 2; see Figures 3 and 4). As known, this conveyance can also be achieved by means of pressure rollers 5 pushing the belt 4 upward against a fixed ruler 3 so that the sheet 1 located between the ruler 3 and the belt 4 will be conveyed by the latter belt 4 in the direction of the arrow 13, i.e. from right to left. When the sheetl enters the device from ~ the right-hand side, the flap 1' will ;: :

` 2~12%~
- 4 - J~F1~4 already have been folded through 90 by helical guides associated to an edge 3a with variable dihedral angle of a ruler 3 tas already commented above). A first end of this ruler 3 is fitted on the front part of the machine with means not represented, the other end being free and extending almost to the downstream end (with reference to the direction of the arrow 13) of the above described folding device. In this device, the folding of the flap 1' from 90 to 180 is ensured by the belt 6 subjected to the action of various truncated rollers 7 with variable conicity (see fig. 4).
Every roller 7 is fitted with its axle 7a on a fixture 20.
The position of the roller 7 with regard to the fixture 20 can set by means of a tightening screw 20a. All fixtures 20 are fitted on a bar 15. Moreover, the tightening screw 20a allows to position all the fixtures 20 on the bar 15. The tightening screw 20 also allows the setting of every fixture 20 on the bar 15. The lower edge of the belt 6 is held at a steady distance with regard to the edge 3a by a guiding bar 21. The latter bar 21 is supported by a fixed bar 220 Tightening screws 21a passing through the slots foreseen for the guiding bar 21 and engaged in the bar 22 allow to vary the distance between the edge 3a and the guiding bar 21 as required by the thickness of the sheet 1. The bar 22 is ;; fitted by means of angle pieces 24 and screws 24a on a plate 23 extending throughout the length of the device and on which the pressing rollers S are fitte~. The plate 23 is fitted by means of screws 23a on a horizontal support 25 of the machine frame (not represented).
.
The bar 15 is fitted with both ends on a movable support 30a and 30b respectively, the one, 30a, being thus located at the upstream end of the device, and the other, 30b, at the downstream end. Both movable supports 30a, 30b are simultaneously pivotable around an axle coinciding with the .:

.
folding line l. To this aim, every movable support 30a, 30b is provided with two cams 31a, 32a, as well as 31b, 32b respectively, each cam describing an arc centered on the folding line l. The active surfaces of the two cams 31a, and 32a as well as 31b, and 32b are located opposite one another and operate jointly with three rollers 33a and 33b respectively fitted on vertical upstream and downstream stays 36a and 36b respectively. Both stays 36a, 36b are fitted on the horizontal support 25 by means of screws 27a and 27b respectively.

Every movable support 30a, 30b is moreover provided with a toothèd arc 37a, 37b respectively centered on the line l and engaged in a toothed pinion 38a and 38b fitted on a shaft 39. Each end of the shaft 39 is able to rotate within a corresponding bore of the vertical stays 36a, 36b. In this way, the rotation of the shaft 39 by means of a handle 40 engaged with its upstream end allows to simultaneously pivot the two movable supports 30a, 30b around the line l. A
slotted fixture 41 (similar to the fixture 20) fitted on the upstream vertical stay 36a and provided with a bore designed as a passage for the corresponding end of the shaft 33 allows the positioning of the pivotable supports 30a, 30b by means of the tightening screws 42. Pivoting the supports 30a, 30b ~around the folding line l has the advantage that every contact point between a roller 7 and the belt 6 will also describe~ a circle centered on this very line l (as may be gathered from fig. 3, 4). In other words, when adjusting the helical inciination of the belt 6 by pivoting the two supports 30a, 30b, the crosswise sections of the belt 6 , ~:
running;~on the rollers 7 are compPIed to also pi.vot around the~line l. In this ~way, the belt 6 will exert regular pressure onto the flap 1' with all its surface during its folding around the line 1~ It revealed that if a ~: .

2 ~ :~
reliable contact existing between the rollers 7, the belt 6 and the flap 1' is always maintained, the length of the folding device can also be shortened accordingly.

It is understood that numerous modifications can be added to the folding device described above without overstepping the limits of the invention. So, ~or instance, there is the possibility to have every sheet conveyed by means of guiding lays fitted on a conveyor chain as shown by fig. 1.
