Abstract
26950-3 A container is disclosed which is made of metal or rigid synthetic resin material in a cylindrical shape and has a dispensing opening cut-out substantially in the whole length of the cylindrical wall. A cut-off blade is disposed in one edge of the dispensing opening, wherein a masking sheet is enclosed. The masking sheet has an unfoldable pleated ply section in one widthwise side section and a pressure-sensitive adhesive tape disposed in another width-wise side section and extending along the whole longitudinal length, with the adhesive surface being exposed. The sheet as a whole is coiled in a roll. 61SA7026
Description
132~131 Background of the Invention This invention relates to a masking sheet adapted to be used in a painting operation, e.g., upon spray-painting an outer surface of the building walls, for covering a surface not desired to be painted, e.g., a side of window frames; and furthermore a container with means for cutting said masking sheet.
When an outer surface of this building wall is spray-painted by a painter in an elevated position, a 10 surface or surfaces not desired to be painted, e.g., sides of the window frames, have to be masked conventionally with new papers. Disadvantageously, this conventional operatlon may be hazardous and may not be perfectly effective, leaving some surface 15 unmasked.
Summary of the Invention The purpose of this invention is to provide a masking ~heet used in painting operation for masking sides of window frames and other surfaces in an easy 20 fashion, with one hand of the painter, positioned in an elevated place to which he can easily transport the masking sheet according to this invention.
Another purpose is to provide a container for a painter's masking sheet, which container permits the 25 painters to cut the masking sheet with his one hand.
In general, this invention permits any masking operation to cover any surfaces desired to be not : . ' , -:

In one aspect this invention provides a masking shield for use in a painting operation, comprising: an elongate sheet member coiled in a roll, said sheet member having an adhesive portion defined by a pressure sensitive adhesive tape disposed longitudinally along sheet member wherein a portion of the adhe-sive surface of said tape overlaps and adheres to the upper side and edge of said sheet member, the remainder portion of the adhesive surface of said tape being exposed; and a ply portion formed by a folding of said sheet member along the longitudinal width thereof.
In use, the masking sheet, after having been transported and placed near a window frame side, for instance, may be held with the pressure-sensitive adhesive tape pressed against and thereby glued on the upper member of the window frame, and then unrolled in the other direction while the unrolled position of the adhesive tape is glued thereon. After the upper window frame me~ber has been covered, the ply portion of the sheet can be easily unfolded to generate an unfolded sheet over all the side of the window frame.
Any unnecessary portion of the masking sheet formed in use should be cut off after the adhesive tape of the masking sheet has been glued on an upper frame of window frame. The cutting operation must be done by a painter frequently in an elevated place, with a cutter knife used hazardously.
According to the second aspect of the invention, pro-vided is a container of generally cylindrical shape, made of metal ~:: , . . . . .

3 26905-3 or rigid synthetic resin, having enclosed therein an elongate sheet member coiled in a roll, said sheet member having an ad-hesive portion defined by a pressure sensitive adhesive tape disposed longitudinally along sheet member wherein a portion of the adhesive surface of said tape overlaps and adheres to the upper side and edge of said sheet member, the remainder portion of the adhesive surface of said tape being exposed; and a ply portion formed by a folding of said sheet member along the longitudinal width thereof, said container having a dispensing opening which is cut-out from substantially the whole length of the cylindrical wall of said container and a cut-off blade disposed along one edge of said dispensing opening.
The container makes it easy to transport the masking sheet to an elevated, unstable position and permits the gluing and cutting off operations to be easily effected, where the container can be placed against the upper member of the window frame and moved in the other direction, and the cut-off blade disposed on the one edge of the dispensing opening is pressed against a cut-off section of the masking sheet and drawn downward.
Brief DescriPtion of the Drawinqs - One embodiment of the invention is shown in the attached drawings of which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a container;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken along line II - II of Fig. li Fig. 3 is a partially broken-away perspective view of a masking sheet to be enclosed in the container; and Fig. 9 is a perspective view of a sheet coiled in a roll.
1~21~31 Detailed Description of the Prererred Embodiment Reference numeral 1 in Figs. 1 and 2 designates a container shell made of a metal or rigid synthetic resin material and having a cylindrical wall 2 with a dispensina opening 3 for the masking sheet hereinafter described being cut substantially along the whole length. A saw-toothed cut-off blade 4 is disposed in one edge of said dispensing opening 3. A perforate opening 5 having a size through which a painter's finger may pass into the container is formed in a suitable position of the cylindrical wall 2. The container has an upper and lower end flange plates 6 and 7, at least one of which is detachable, and both of which have protrusions 8 and 9 centrally located thereof and extending axially inwardly for fittingly supporting the hereinafter described rolled masking sheet.
A masking sheet to be enclosed in the container of the invention is shown in Figs. 3 and 4 is formed in a wide, elongated sheet-like shape by synthetic resin, oil-impregnated material or any other liquid-resistant material. The sheet 11 is unfoldably pleated in the width-wise one side section to form a ply portion On the width-wise other side section disposed is a pressure-sensitive adhesive tape ~ extending along the whole longitudinal length thereof, with the adhesive surface thereof exposed (This may be accomplished by :. . . : '':': :.
,- . ,, 1~21131 glueing only one half width section of the adhesive surface of the tape to the sheet). The sheet is as a whole coiled in a roll to provide a finished masking sheet 14.
The end flange plate 6 is removed and the sheet 14 is placed into the container 1 with the centered portion being fitted with the center protrusion 9 of the other end flange plate 7. The flange plate 6 is mounted on the container with the inner central protrusion 8 being fitted with the central portion of the sheet roll. The sheet has then its open end positioned adjacent to the dispensing opening 3 of the container.
In use for covering a window frame, the container 1 with the sheet 14 inside is carried by a painter to the spot where the pressure-sensitive adhesive tape 12 of sheet 11 is pressed against one side of the upper member o a window frame and attached thereto. The sheet is then unrolled and dispensed through the dispensing opening 3 while being attached thereto.
Thus, after attaching all over the upper window frame member, the cut-off blade on the edge of the dispensing opening 3 is pressed against a cut off portion of the sheet 14 and drawn downwards to complete the cutting ~ off step. The unfoldable pleated section ~ in the width-wise one side section of the sheet 11 is unfolded 1~2~13~
and extended to cover the whole surface of the window frame.
In the shown embodiment, the perforate opening 5 which is formed in the cylindrical wall 2 of the container 1 makes the sheet in the container accessible by a painter's finger, so tl~at the sheet can be restrained by his finger against undesirable movement particularly when the sheet is dispensed from the container or when the sheet is cut off.
From the foregoing description, the container according to the invention has the advantages that it permits the bulky sheet to be carried in an unstable place and enables the masking operation to be effected with a painter's one hand.
