Abstract

ABSTRACT

The vehicle is of the type formed by a lower shell (21) assembled with an upper shell (22) which covers the lower shell at least partly so as to form an armoured case. The object of the invention is to provide a light armoured vehicle. The solution to this problem resides in the fact that the lower shell (21) of the vehicle is assembled by detachable means to a chassis (1) which is independent and autonomous and mounted on wheels and supports all the driving, transmission and shock-absorbing means, so that the case (2) may be easily substituted for the body with which this chassis is usually provided and vice versa.
The main use of the invention resides in the sealing of the armoured case with a conventional body of a truck, small truck or van.

Description

Light reconnaissance and patrol vehicle.

The invention relates to a light reconnaissance and patrol vehicle whose design and bodywork are such that it is practically invulnerable to project;les or mines splinters.
- It is already known to use (French patent 7g 15 552 of 18 June 1979 belonging to the Applicant) light armoured ~ehicles constructed from a lower case in the shape of a shell or dish, this case being formed by deflecting walls and acting as a chassis for fixing mechanical and driving means for its propulsion and its displacement. Now, it has been found that although these light armoured vehicles are satisfactory from the safety Point ~f view, their assembly and manufacture substantially increase the production cost precisely because all the mechanical means required for the displacement of the vehicle must be permanently fixed under the case.
Conseguently, owing to this design, all the fixing points of the mechani-cal means must be provided under this case and this seriously complicatesthe construction of the latter.
There are also known (French patent 2 254 205 of 7 December 1973 also belonging tG the Applicant) ris.d chass;s whu,e rear part is at a lower level owing to the fact that the longitudinal side-members are offset in the region of the rear spring support of the front suspension of the vehicle so as to divide the chassis into two parts at different levels, the front part being higher than the rear part reserved for the body of the vehicle. The advantage of these chassis is that they include all the fixing means whether it concerns brackets for receiving the motor unit, spring supports for fixing the shock absorbers leaves or means for fixing the front and rear axles, differentials of t~e gear box, fuel and water tanks, etc. It was therefore thought that these independent fully equipped chassis could be perfectly suitable as a framework of light armoured vehicles. ` s "' .`L~ ~9~'Z7 ~onsequently, the invention concerns the original and surprising assembly of a lightly armoured case formed by two superimposed shells with an independent chassis which, heretofore, was only intended to receive the conventional bodies of trucks or vans.
The invention therefore relates to a light reconnaissance and patrol armoured vehicle of the type comprising a lower shell assembled with an upper shell which at least partly covers it so as to form an armoured case, wherein the lower shell is assembled by detachable means with an independent and autonomous chassis mounted on wheels and supporting all the driving and transmission means and shock-absorbing means, so that the case may be easily substituted for the body which these chassis are usually equipped with and vice versa.
According to a feature of the invention, the lower shell of the case is farmed by an armoured skirt having at least two inclined walls of dif-ferent inclinations and surrounding and clodding the chassis throughoutthe periphery ~hereof, said skirt being assembled with said chassis by detachable fixing means.
- According to another feature of the invention, this skirt is extended within the longitudinal side-members of the chassis and its inclined walls extend inwardly of the case in the direction of said chassis.
Further features and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the ensuing description with references to the accompanying drawings in which :

The invention concerns a chassis 1 such as that described in the afore-mentioned French patent 1 254 205, on which there is detachably fixed a case 2 formed by two superimposed shells 22-22 which completely 9~'~7 3.

This chassis (Fig. 2) mainly comprises two longitudinal side-members 11-12 which are interconnected in a conventional manner by cross-members 3.
The side-members are offset or cranked in the region of the rear spring supports 4 of the front suspension 5 so that the front part 6 of the chassis is raised relative to the rear part 7 which usually supports the body of the vehicle. The s~ring support 8 of the front shock absorber 5 is also fixed to the raised part 6 of the chassis and, in combination with the spring support 4, serves to fix the shock absorber leaf springs 5. The chassis also includes a bracket 9 for fixing the hydraulic or pneumatic shock absorbers 10, said chassis being provided with a front set of wheels 11 and a rear set of wheels 12, each of which is provided with their bells (not shown) which enclose a differential. The chassis also supports the gearbox 13, the connections 14 and 15 between this gearbox and the front and the rear differentials. The chassis also in-cludes the passenger compartment, or more precisely the parts forming the cab of the vehicle, i.e. the dashboard 16, with a steering wheel 17 the change gear lever 18 and the seats 19 with which the cab is equipped.
The rear set of wheels 12 is also fixed on leaf springs 20 which are assembled with the side-members 11-12 of the chassis by front and rear spring supports 21 and 22. Here again, in the same way as the front axle, the shoc~ absorbing means is completed by a pneumatic or hydraulic shock absorber 23. It will be understood that this chassis may have either two Z5 driving wheels or be provided with a dog clutch system whereby the four wheels may be rendered driving wheels through the gearbox 13 which is provided with this dog clutch system. Before the mounting of the case 2, the chassis is consequently provided with merely the equipment 16-17-18-1 of the cab to the exclusion of the body, the bonnet, the wings which will ~3~l 4 be directly formed by the body constituted by the armoured case.
This case 2 ma~ be formed by a lower dish-shaped shell 21 which extends only to a joint plane 24 and is assembled with a second upper shell 22 which is also armoured, the assembly in this joint plane 24 being for example by means of bolting or welding. The lower shell 21 has the feature of having front and rear and lateral sides formed by inclined walls 25 and 26, these walls being in the form of longitudinal strips which are interconnected at their junction point 27, these walls 25 and 26 forming deflecting walls located in a plane which is other than perpendicular to the horizontal plane so that proiectiles are urged outwardly by reflection, whether it concerns mine splinters or projec-tiles coming from fire-arms directed at the vehicle.
According to a feature of the invention, the lower shell 21 fo ms a part of the armouring of the vehicle so that the side 26 extends the side 25 and extends under the chassis both ln the region of the side walls and in the region of the front and rear walls of the chassis so as to protect it, as seen in Fig. 1 and 2.
The lower shell 21 may be provided with a bottom which may or may not be armoured and is rigid with, or mounted on, the skirt formed by the walls 25-26, or is devoid of a bottom, the latter being in this case formed by a floor 28 rigid with the side members of the chassis (Fig. 2).
In the last-mentioned case, the inclined wall 26 is extended towards the interior of the chassis and rises in the form of a flange 29 having an end portion 3~ which is bent at a right angle and bears on the side-members 21-22 of the chassis with interposition of shock-absorbing blocks 31 or rubber or plastics material.
The shell 22 which is superimposed on the lower shell 21 also has the feature of comprising side walls and front and rear end walls 23 which are inclined. The front wall 32 constituting the bonnet is also ~ 94~7 5.
inclined and is bordered laterally by inclined walls 33 defining the bonnet. The lower shell 21 has wheel passages 34 in the region of the front and rear axles 11 and 12, as seen in Fig. 1.
According to an adYantageous feature of the invention, the case is merely placed on, and fixed to, the side-members 11 and 12 Of the chassis by means of brackets or fixing tabs rigid with the chassis and allowing the use of stubs which extend through the bottom of the case, or the floor of the chassis, and-receive lock nuts. These fixing points (dia-grammatically shown at 35) are judiciously arranged throughout the length of the side-members of the chassis so as to ensure a localized and exact assembly of the case on said chassis. The fixing means are detachable so that the case may be dismantled for replacing it if necessary by a con-ventional body of utility vehicles or vans.
However, the case may be fixed to the chassis, while allowing it to be removed by spot welds spaces along the side-members.
The upper shall 22 which is superimposed on the lower shell 21 may have a protective roof 24 which is also armoured. However this wall cons-tituting the roof may be proYided with a large npening for~ing an "open body". Therear end of the upper shell 22 may be arranged in a form of a double door 36 allowing access to the interior of the Yehicle, this double door also being armoured.
Finally, the invention essentially concerns an armoured case which is closed or open in its upper part and is detachably mounted on an indepen-dent and autonomous chassis including all the drivin~, suspension mechani-cal means, gearbox, etc.., so that the case may be assembled immediatelyand rapidly with the chasssis or detached therefrom as quickly as possible.
It must be understood that the invention is not intended to be limi-ted to the embodiment described hereinbefore in respect of which modifi-cations may be envisaged wlthout departin~ from the scope of the invention as defined in the claims.

Claims (6)

I Claim :
1. A light reconnaissance and patrol armoured vehicle comprising an independent chassis having longitudinal side-members and cross-members and carrying driving means, transmission means, shock-absorbing means and wheels for the vehicle, an armoured case supported by the chassis, said case comprising an upper shell and a lower shell which are of substantially trapezoidal sectional shape and are superposed on, and assembled with, each other, the upper shell being at least partly closed in a part of the vehicle, the lower shell comprising a peripheral surrounding skirt formed by adjoining longitudinal walls and traverse walls which walls have different downward inclinations toward the inte-rior of the vehicle, said skirt extending downwardly beyond the longitu-dinal side-members and the cross-members of the chassis and including an upwardly extending inner flange which has means hooked onto said longitu-dinal side-members, detachable assembling means fixing said means hooked onto said longitudinal side-members at a plurality of spaced-apart points, shockabsorbing means interposed between said means hooked onto the longi-tudinal side-members and said lontigudinal side-members, said case being capable of being disassembled from said chassis so as to be replaced, if required, by a conventional body or vice versa, so that the vehicle is convertible with the use of the same chassis.
2. A vehicle as claimed in claim 1, wherein the case comprises an armoured bottom portion and detachable fixing means fixed the armoured bottom portion to the longitudinal side-members.
3. A vehicle as claimed in claim 1, wherein the assembling means comprise studs and nuts arranged at intervals along substantially the entire length of the longitudinal side-members.

4. A vehicle as claimed in claim 1, wherein the assembling means comprise spot welds arranged at intervals along substantially the entire length of the longitudinal side-members.
5. A vehicle as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the chassis is upwardly offset in a front part of the vehicle so as to define two different levels.
6. A vehicle as claimed in claim 1, wherein the shockabsorbing means comprise shockabsorbers of elastomeric material inserted between folded edge portions of the skirt and the longitudinal side-members of the chassis.
