Abstract

TAPED BAG DISPENSER WITH DIFFERENTIAL DRIVE

Abstract of the Disclosure A device useful for dispensing taped bags wherein a plurality of bags are connected together in an imbricated arrangement by a pair of tapes removably secured thereto having a source of taped bags and a device comprising a differential gear for individually winding each of the pair of tapes so as to maintain the bags in an aligned state with each of the tapes having substantially equal tension therein.

Description

~4~

.
Background of the Invention This invention relates generally to the art of bag dispensing and more particularly to the art of dispensing a plurality of bags held together by a pair of tapes.
Packaging plays an important role in the economy. The ultimate cost of packaged goods to the consumer depends on the availability of low cost efficient packaging methods and devices, including auxilliary components used in packaging. A variety of consumer products, including meat, are packaged in bags supplied as a chain of imbricated taped bags wherein the bags are adhered to one or more strands of tape. Imbricated bags are disclosed in United States Patent Nos. 3,587,843 (~ing) and 3,698,547 (Roberts). Also disclosed therein are tape pulling units for automatically dispensing taped bags. United States Patent No. 4,032,038 to ~lendricks et al additionally discloses a taped bag dispenser.
While each of these taped bag dispensers do function to dispense taped bags in a generally satisfactory manner, they do not contain provisions for automatically maintaining equal tension within the two tapes utilized for carrying the taped bags.
Summary of the Invention It is thus an object of this invention to provide an apparatus for dispensing taped bags while maintaining alignment of the tapes.
I-t is a further obiect of this invention to provide an apparatus for dispensing taped bags wherein substantially equal tension is maintained within the tapes during the movement of the taped bags.
These as well as other objects are accomplished by a taped bag dispenser having a source of taped bags with two tapes attached to each bag for unifying the assemblage of bags into an imbricated arrangement, separate reels for winding each of the two tapes, drive means for producing rotational motion in each reel and a differential communicating with the _ 2 ~

drive means and the reels whereby the drive means transmits rotational motion to each reel through the differential to wind each of the two tapes with substantially equal tension.
Brief Description of the Drawings Figure 1 is an isometric view of an apparatus for dispensing taped bags incorporating a differential in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 illustrates a drive means in conjunction with the :; differential drive means in accordance with this invention.
Figure 3 illustrates another drive means in conjunction with 10 the differential drive means of this invention.
Detailed Descri~tion In accordance with this invention it has been fo~md that taped ' bags, having at least two tapes, may be dispensed in an apparatus which contains reel means for winding the tapes associated with drive means through a differential drive mechanism. The use of a differential drive mechanism maintains substantially uniform tension within the two tapes and maintains the alignment of the imbricated bags. Further description of the invention is given with reference to the various figures in the drawing.
Figure 1 of the drawings illustrates a bag dispensing apparatus - having a differential in accordance with this invention. Illustrated inFigure 1 of the drawings is a chain of imbricated bags 1 attached togethsr by tapes 3 and 5. Lead bag 7 is maintained in the dispensing position.
The supply of bags 1 may be maintained within any convenient source such as a box 9 maintained so as to have the tapes accessible ~or movement to the dispensing position.

l, The individual tapes 3 and 5 are wound respectively on reels 11 and 13. Drive means 15 transmits mechanical motion to differential 17 which imparts the mechanical movement to reels 11 and 13.
Differential 17 is a differential gear in the conventional sense of the word. As used herein a differential gear is an arrangement of gears forming an epicyclic train for conn0cting two shafts or axle in the same line dividing the driving force equally between them and permitting one shaft to revolve faster than the other. Such a differential gear is described in United States Patent No. 3,406,592 which issued to Ronald L. Von Kaler on October 22, 1968. The type of differential described therein is the type which is useful within an automotive vehicle wherein a driving force is transmitted through a differential gear to driven wheels whereby one wheel may be permitted to stand still while the other rotates.
It is readily apparent that the use of such a diferential will permit the slack of one tape to be removed while permitting the other tape to remain substantially stationary. Such removal of slack maintains the tension within the tape substantially equal while maintaining the bag alignment. This is a significant advantage not possessed by the prior art bag dispensing devices.
Figures 2 and 3 show alternative connections for drive means 15 so as to permit the driving force to be passed through differential 17 to winding reels 11 and 13. Shown in Figure 2 is a conventional chain or belt drive 19 which may be intermittently activated for movement by means of motor 21. In a preferred embodiment, the apparatus contains sensing means 23 ~Figure 1) such as an electric eye or mechanical sensors to detect the presence of a bag in the dispensing position. Should no bag be present in the dispensing position~ motor means 21 would be activated for movement until the sensor 23 indicates the presence of such a bag to deactivate motor means 21.

~.
~ ~,.

An alternative drive means is indicated in Figure 3 of the drawings wherein the drive means 15' comprise an air cylinder 25 connected through a lever linkage 27 operable for moving a differential in only one direction. The air cylinder 25 is connected to sensing means 23 in a manner similar to that described with reference to Figure 2 of the drawings.
It is thus seen that the taped bag dispenser in accordance with this invention permits the movemant of taped bags through a differential drive whereby substantially equal tension is maintained within the tapes and substantial alignment of the bags is maintained. In the prior art such misalignment was not compensated for by the equipment dispensing the bags but had to be manually compensated for by either advancing the winding of one tape or cutting one of the tapes and retying so as to re-establish substantially equal tension within the two tapes.
While many variations within the spirit and scope o~ this invention will be apparent to those of skill in the art upon a reading of the above detailed description, such variations are within the scope of this invention as is measured by the following appended claims.
