SISTEMAS E MÉTODOS PARA TRATAR UM SUBSTRATO DE METAL. São divulgados neste documento sistemas e métodos para o tratamento de um substrato de magnésio ou de uma liga de magnésio. O sistema inclui uma composição de limpeza com um pH superior a 8,5 ou um solvente, e uma composição de pré-tratamento compreendendo um composto de organofosfato e/ou um composto de organofosfonato. O método inclui colocar uma superfície de substrato em contato com a composição de limpeza ou o solvente e colocar a superfície em contato com a composição de pré-tratamento. Também são divulgados substratos tratados com um dos sistemas ou métodos. Também são divulgados substratos de magnésio ou liga de magnésio em que, entre a interface ar/substrato e 500 nm abaixo da interface ar/substrato (a) oxigênio e magnésio estão presentes em uma quantidade combinada de pelo menos 70% atômica; (b) carbono está presente em uma quantidade não superior a 30% atômica; e/ou (c) fluoreto está presente em uma quantidade não superior a 8% atômica, em que a % atômica é medida por perfilagem de profundidade XPS.SYSTEMS AND METHODS TO TREAT A METAL SUBSTRATE. Disclosed herein are systems and methods for treating a magnesium substrate or a magnesium alloy. The system includes a cleaning composition having a pH greater than 8.5 or a solvent, and a pretreatment composition comprising an organophosphate compound and/or an organophosphonate compound. The method includes contacting a substrate surface with the cleaning composition or solvent and contacting the surface with the pretreatment composition. Also disclosed are substrates treated with one of the systems or methods. Also disclosed are magnesium or magnesium alloy substrates wherein, between the air/substrate interface and 500 nm below the air/substrate interface (a) oxygen and magnesium are present in a combined amount of at least 70 atomic%; (b) carbon is present in an amount not exceeding 30% atomic; and/or (c) fluoride is present in an amount not exceeding 8 atomic%, where the atomic % is measured by XPS depth logging.
