método de analisar uma célula ou outro material biológical compreendendo um ácido nucleico. de acordo com a invenção, é fornecido um composto de f´romula (i) em que a é um grupo alquileno c~ 2~-~ 8~; r^ 1^, r^ 2^, r^ 3^ e r^ 4^ são independentemente selecionados de hidrogênio, alquila c~ 1~-~ 4~ e di-hidroxialquila c~ 2~-~ 4~, em que o átomo de carbono ligado ao átomo de hidrogênio não é substituído com um grupo hidroxila e nenhum átomo de carbono é subsbtituído com dois grupos hidroxila, ou r^ 2^ e r^ 3^ juntos formam um grupo alquileno c~ 2~-~ 6~, que com o átomo de nitrogênio ao qual r^ 2^ e r^ 3^estão ligados formam um anel heterocíclico; x~ 1~, x~ 2~ e x~ 3~ são independentemente selecionados de hidrogênio, hidroxila, nr^ 1^-a- nr^ 2^r^ 3^r^ 4^ + (z^ m-^) 1/m, amino halogênio, alcóxi c~ 1~-~ 4~ ou alcanoiloxi c~ 2~-~ 8~; e (z^ m-^) 1/m é um ânion de carga m; ou um derivado cujo grupo nr^ 1^ é queternizado.
