Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION Petty Patent TRACK FRAME FOR SLIDING SCREENS The invention is described in the following statement: TRACK FRAME FOR SLIDING SCREENS This invention relates to improvements in the processes used for installing, operating, and providing security to, double-sliding window screens.
In installing screens to outswinging Windows the screens must usually be fitted to the inside of the window, in such a way that access is still available to operate the windows. One method of acheiving this is to install a pair of sliding screens, which can be opened to one side for access. FIG 1 shows a diagram of such a situation. The methods used to install such a pair of double-sliding screens have been governed by the materials available. The particular .concern exists where the screens are used as security protection over the window. many methods in current use are based on minimal material usage, to reduce costs, and result in compromising the security value of the screens through lack of jeryprotection at the edges of the screens. Alternatively, in using sufficient and suitable materials to ensure the security value of the screens, installation methods become costly, both in material and labour costs.* One such method involves separate single tracks in conjunction, with two locks. The other drawback of any current method is the frequent need for extra timbeiwork or aluminium support fixings, in instances where minimal recess depth is available in the window.
All of these difficulties are overcome for most situations by the present invention, which provides a track frame constructed from a single profile made from an extrudable metal or other suitably strong substance; and incorporating: double channels, separated by a spacing ridge, the size of this separation allowing for fitting of interlocking components referred to hereafter; an installation flange flush with one face of the profile, which can be removed if not required, to allow for versatility of installation; and provision for screw connection by means of a tubular channel located in the spacing ridge, so as to allow the profile to be made into a cohesive and independent framework; which framework encases two sliding screens, of any of a number of flyscreen and security screen styles currently avai-lable; which screens are then spaced apart by the spacing ridge referred to above, allowing rear interlocks or similar devices to be fitted to the rear of the said screens; both of which screens can be then secured with a single locking device.
In the principal form of the invention, the track frame profile is as shown in cross-sectional diagram FIG 2. Key features include the double channels 1, the spacing ridge 2 and its incorporated screw fixing guide 3; the removable installation flange 4 and the inner channels 5 for recess installation.
Double channels 1 can be produced at any size so as to have sizes available to accamodate any standard screen frame available.
Installation flange 4 and inner channels 5 may have optional screw guide lines 11 as shown. The profile could potentially be constructed of any sufficiently strong extrudable substance. The exposed surfaces could include a texture, design or other decorative feature.. The finish would depend on constructional material and the desired end use-requirements.
FIG 3 shows operation in a typical application. FIG 4 shows sample methods of using the screw fixing guide 3. FIG 5 shows sample methods of installing rear interlocks to the screens; and mounting of a lock to the 1~track frame. Track frame 6 can be mitre cut to join at the corners, being screwed together with a suitable screw 7 into the fixing guide 3.
Screens 8 can be constructed to suit the size of the frame, allowing suitable overlap for fitting of the rear interlocks 9 to the rear of each screen. A single multi-pin lock or similar device 10 can be mounted on the track frame to penetrate the frame and both screens, thus securing the screens.
The system could be adapted to a vertical configuration; for example as sash fitting or as a servery screen; with or without the upper screen being fixed; and with any of several means of holding the upper screen in place, for example: nylon button clips for friction operation; or metal bow clips for friction operation; or a positive latching device such as a barrel bolt.
The system could be readily adapted to accept a third or even a fourth screen; although of course in such cases more locks would be needed, and the screens would be limited in movement inasmuch as only one or two segments of the window are available at any given time.
The system could be readily adapted to accept standard non-security flyscreens, with insect-proof brushpile or similar insect deterrant mounted to the rear of the screens in lieu of interlocks.
The system can be constructed in a factory situation, removing the present necessity to assemble tracking and build-out timber or supports on site. Installation can be face-fitting or recess-fitting, and extra timberwork will not usually be required. Assembly and labour times are thus reduced.
Claims (3)
1. A track frame constructed from a single profile made from an extrudable metal or other suitably strong substance; and incorporating: double channels, separated by a spacing ridge, the size of this separation allowing for fitting of interlocking components referred to hereafter; an installation flange flush with one face of the profile, which can be removed if not required, to allow for versatility of installation; and provision for screw connection by means of a tubular channel located in the spacing ridge, so as to allow the profile to be made into a cohesive and independent framework; which framework encases two sliding screens, of any of a number of flyscreen and security screen styles currently available; which screens are then spaced apart by the spacing ridge referred to above, allowing rear interlocks or similar devices to be fitted to the rear of the said screens; both of which screens can be then secured with a single locking device.
2. The track frame of Claim 1 wherein the profile is made of aluminium.
3. The track frame of Claim 1 wherein the framework therein referred to encases more than two screens, with a sufficient number of locking devices. Robert James HISCOCK Gwenda Marjorie HISCOCK 11 July 2000
