Field of the invention
The present invention relates to a holder for a fishing lure. In preferred forms, the invention relates
to apparatus for the storage for fishing lures.
Background to the invention
A fishing lure is a form of fishing tackle which acts as an artificial fishing bait to attract fish. Lures
.0 frequently include one or more hooks, and a leader line to connect to a fishing line or rod. Known lures
range in size, colour and pattern and may be designed for different types of fishing and/or to target
different types of fish. The lures may also be designed for different fishing environments and/or
conditions.
.5 Fishermen and game fishing operators typically have a large variety of lures. Proper storage and care
of the lures is important because that prevents lures being misplaced, lost and/or broken, or becoming
tangled which requires effort before the lure can be used. In addition, it is important that lures can be
easily returned to storage to further prevent these issues. Having a simple, cost effective and easy to
use lure storage system will improve the overall fishing preparation and experience.
Storage devices or holders for fishing lures are known. One problem with the available devices and
systems is that they are bulky and obtrusive. This results in reduced usage and appeal to users.
Another problem with the known devices is that they are not suited for easy storing and accessing of the lures. Therefore, the inventor has identified a need to provide an improved way of storing lures.
It is an object of aspects of the technology to provide storage for fishing lures to overcome or
ameliorate problems with existing storage devices or holders. Alternatively, it is an object to provide
an improved holder for a fishing lure. Alternatively, it is an object to at least provide the public with a
useful choice.
Summary of the invention
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a holder for a fishing lure which has a lure
portion and a leader line, wherein the holder includes:
JAWS Ref: 314820AU
a body portion which provides a surface against which the lure portion can be positioned;
a reel portion about which at least a portion of the leader line can be wound;
wherein the holder is configured to be associated in use with a fastener configured to hold
the lure portion against the surface.
According to another aspect of the invention there is provided a holder for a fishing lure which has a
lure portion and a leader line, wherein the holder includes:
a body portion which provides a surface against which the lure portion can be positioned;
a reel portion about which at least a portion of the leader line can be wound; and
.0 a fastener configured to in use hold the lure portion against the surface.
According to another aspect of the invention there is provided a fishing accessory, wherein the
fishing accessory includes:
a fishing lure which has a lure portion and a leader line; and
.5 a holder;
wherein the holder includes a body portion, a reel portion and a fastener,
wherein the lure portion is positioned against the body portion and the leader line is
wound about the reel portion, and
further wherein the fastener holds the lure portion against the body portion.
According to another aspect of the invention there is provided a storage system, wherein the
storage system includes:
at least one fishing accessory as described herein, a support structure,
wherein the support structure and the fishing accessory is / are configured to releasably
attach to each other.
In examples, the body portion may be configured such that a substantial portion of the length of the
lure portion may, in use, be positioned against the surface.
In preferred examples, the surface may be recessed e.g. be concave. Providing a recessed surface
may be beneficial as it can assist to protect the lure portion from being knocked or damaged, and
may facilitate a more compact storage of the fishing lure. However, the surface may not be recessed,
or may have alternate configurations e.g. may be outwardly convex.
JAWS Ref: 314820AU
In examples, the body portion may be substantially elongated.
In preferred examples, the body portion may be substantially elliptical.
Providing a body portion which is one or more of substantially elongated and substantially elliptical
may provide a number of advantages. For instance, the body portion is structured to be longer than
a substantial part of the lure portion which is typically elongated to facilitate protection and storage
of the lure portion. The lure portion may include a skirt and/or a hook, wherein the shape and
.0 dimensions of the body portion may reduce and/or eliminate the skirt and/or the hook from
catching on other surfaces / objects. The body portion's shape and dimensions may also facilitate
storage of the lure so that it can be stored in its natural position, i.e. the entire lure portion lies
against a surface. This limits / prevents the skirt from deforming and facilitates drying of the skirt
when the lure portion is held against the surface of the body portion.
.5
However, alternatives for the shape and configuration of the body portion are envisaged. For
instance, the body portion may be formed in any other suitable shape.
In examples, the reel portion may include a channel to in use receive the leader line.
In examples, the reel portion may be substantially elongated.
In examples, the reel portion may be substantially elliptical.
Providing a reel portion which is one or more of substantially elongated and substantially elliptical
may provide a number of advantages. For instance, the reel portion can receive a relatively large
amount of the leader line while being relatively compact.
In addition, the shape may minimise the overall width of the lure holder which can be advantageous
in maximising the number of fishing lures (and fishing accessories) that can be displayed or stored.
Furthermore, a person can easily access a larger number of fishing lure (and fishing accessories) for a
given width and therefore the present invention may improve usability of a fishing storage system.
JAWS Ref: 314820AU
However, alternatives for the shape and configuration of the reel portion are envisaged. For
instance, the reel portion may be formed in any other suitable shape.
In examples, the reel portion may be structured and arranged to minimise the strain applied to the
5 leader line when that is wound about the reel portion. For instance, the reel portion may be shaped
and / or dimensioned so that the elastic limit of the leader line is not exceeded when the leader line
is wound about the reel portion.
In preferred examples, the reel portion may include a radius which is substantially the same as, or
.0 greater than, a curve that causes strain applied to the leader line to exceed the elastic limit of the
leader line.
In preferred examples, the reel portion and the body portion may be integrally formed with each
other. For example, they may be formed as a single unit. This may facilitate storage of the lure
.5 portion and the leader line together, and makes it easier to access the lure when changing it.
Forming the body portion and the reel portion as a single unit may provide advantages such as
facilitating manufacturing efficiencies by allowing them to be injection moulded together, and
reducing assembly.
'.0 In other examples, the reel portion and the body portion may be separately formed and
permanently or releasably attached in use to each other.
In examples, the holder may include at least one fastener.
In examples, the fastener may be releasably attached to one or more of the body portion and the
reel portion.
However, the fastener may be integrally formed with the holder, or attached thereto.
In preferred examples, the fastener includes one or more straps.
In examples, the fastener includes a first part and a second part configured to, in use, be attached to
each other.
JAWS Ref: 314820AU
In examples, the parts may include at least one component configured to attach the first part and
the part to each other.
In preferred examples, the at least one component includes hook and loop fasteners, e.g. VelcroTM.
However, alternatives for the at least one component are envisaged. For instance, the first part and
the second part may each be provided with a magnet, and in use the magnets interact to releasably
secure the first part and the second part to each other.
.0 In preferred examples, the fastener may be one or more of flexible, resilient, and elastic. Providing a
flexible, resilient and/or elastic fastener may facilitate adjustment. The lure can be easily attached or
removed from the holder. Furthermore, a resilient and/or elastic fastener may help secure the lure
in place on the holder by biasing the lure portion against the surface.
.5 In examples, the holder may include a lure fastener and a line fastener.
In examples, the lure fastener may be a fastener as described above.
In examples, the line fastener may be a separate component or arrangement configured to hold the '.0 leader line on the reel portion e.g. when wound around the reel portion.
In preferred examples, the line fastener may include one or more straps.
In examples, the lure fastener may be further configured to in use hold the leader line in a wound
configuration on the reel portion, wherein the lure fastener forms the line fastener.
In examples, the holder may be configured to be, in use, attached to a support structure.
In examples, the support structure may form part of a storage system.
In examples, the support structure may include a bracket.
In examples, when the holder is attached to the support structure, the surface is orientated to face
away from the support portion. Having the surface face outwardly allows the fishing lure to be more
JAWS Ref: 314820AU
easily viewed when the fishing accessory is attached to the support structure. Therefore, the
arrangement may reduce the number of fishing accessories that a person must move before they
can select the fishing accessories.
In examples, the holder may include an attachment component to facilitate attachment of the
holder to the support structure.
In examples, the attachment component may be configured to facilitate releasable attachment of
the holder to the support structure.
.0
In examples, the attachment component may include one or more hangers to hang the holder from
the other surface.
In preferred examples, the hanger(s) include an opening or a hook provided e.g. provided in or
.5 formed in the body portion. In use, the opening or hook can receive a corresponding peg provided
on the support structure to thereby hang the holder to the support structure.
However, alternatives for the attachment component are envisaged. For instance, the body portion
and the support structure may each be provided with a magnet, and in use the magnets interact to '.0 releasably secure the holder to the support structure.
In examples, the holder may be formed in a range of sizes, each of which is suitable for a different
size fishing lure.
In examples, the range of holders may include at least a first holder and a second holder, wherein
the second holder is relatively larger than the first holder.
In preferred examples, the range of holders further includes a third holder, wherein the third holder
is relatively larger than the first and second holders.
Further aspects of the invention, which should be considered in all its novel aspects, will become
apparent to those skilled in the art upon reading of the following description which provides at least
one example of a practical application of the invention.

Detailed description of the invention
Aspects of the present technology relate to a holder 2000 for a fishing lure 1000. In preferred forms,
the lure 1000 includes a lure portion 1100 and a leader line 1200 as shown in Figures 1A and 1B.
.0
Holderforfishing lure
Referring first to Figures IC to 3 which show representative views of the holder 2000 according to an
embodiment of the present technology. The holder 2000 includes a body portion 2100, a reel portion
2200 and a fastener 2300.
.5
The body portion 2100 provides a surface 2102 against which the lure portion 1100 can be positioned,
as is best illustrated in Figure 1A. The holder 2000 includes a base 2600. The base 2600 may be defined
by the body portion 2100.
'0 The reel portion 2200 is configured so that the leader line 1200 can be wound about it, as is best
illustrated in Figure 1B.
The fastener 2300 is configured to hold the lure portion 1100 against the surface 2102, as is shown in Figures 1A and 1B.
The holder 2000 is configured to be attached to a support structure (as is discussed in more detail
below). For instance, as illustrated in Figures IC to 3, the holder 2000 includes an attachment
component 2400 in the form of an opening 2402 for hanging the holder 2000 from the support
structure.
The body portion 2100 is configured such that at least a portion of the length of the lure portion
1100 can be positioned against the surface 2102. As illustrated in Figures 1A and 1B, a substantial
portion of the length of the lure portion 1100 can be positioned against the surface 2102.
JAWS Ref: 314820AU
As illustrated in Figure 3, the surface 2102 may be recessed. However, the surface 2102 may be
substantially flat or have an outwardly convex shape.
As illustrated in Figures IC to 3, the body portion 2100 may be substantially elongated e.g.
substantially elliptical. However, the body portion 2100 may be formed in any other suitable shape,
e.g. it may be circular, rectangular or square.
In the embodiment shown in Figures IC to 3, the surface 2102 may be relatively smooth. However,
the surface 2102 may have structural features to assist with holding the lure portion 1100 against
.0 the surface 2102. For example, the surface 2102 may include ridges, protrusions, dimples, and/or
gripping means (not shown in the drawings). These may be made from the same material as the reel
portion, or a different a material, e.g. a non-slip or adhesive material.
The body portion 2100 may be relatively rigid e.g. it is made from a relatively rigid material.
.5 Examples of suitable relatively rigid materials include one or more of: thermoplastic materials, e.g.
polypropylene (PPE), and/or polyethylene (PE); recycled thermoplastic materials; reinforced plastics,
e.g. fibre-reinforced plastics; and natural materials, e.g. bamboo.
However, the body portion 2100 may be relatively flexible. In these alternate embodiments, the .0 body portion 2100 may be made from a flexible, resilient material, e.g. one or more of silicone and
rubber.
However, in alternate embodiments not shown in the drawings, the holder may be configured to hold more than one lure. In these forms, the body portion may include more than one surface
against which the lure portion can be positioned.
The reel portion 2200 is configured to enable a leader line 1200 being wound about it. As illustrated
in Figures IC and 3, the reel portion 2200 is provided by a channel 2202 defined between the surface
2102and the base2600
As illustrated in Figures IC and 3, the reel portion 2200 is substantially elongated. As illustrated, the
reel portion 2200 is substantially elliptical. However, the reel portion 2200 may be formed in any
other suitable shape, e.g. it may be circular, rectangular or square. As illustrated, the reel portion
2200 and the body portion 2100 are shaped similar to or the same as one another.
JAWS Ref: 314820AU
The inventors have identified that one or more portions of the leader line 1200 may be deformed to
form a "deformed region" if it is bent about too tight a curve or otherwise strained too much, i.e. the
leader line has a memory. Reference to "deformed region" in the specification shall be understood
to mean a region of the leader line which has been bent / strained until it exceeds its elastic limit
such that a region of the leader line undergoes inelastic or permanent deformation, i.e. the leader
line's shape or configuration is permanently changed.
However, the reel portion 2200 of the present invention is structured and arranged to limit and/or
.0 prevent the formation of deformed regions caused by the leader line 1200 being wound about the
reel portion 2200. In the illustrated embodiment, the reel portion may include a radius which is
greater than a curve that causes the strain on the leader line to exceed the elastic limit of the leader
line 1200. For instance, the curve radius may be between 10 mm and 50 mm, preferably between 20
mm and 40 mm. In one embodiment, the curve radius may be between 20 mm and 30 mm,
.5 preferably 25 mm. In another embodiment shown in Figure IC, the curve radius may be between 30
mm and 40 mm, preferably 35 mm.
In the illustrated embodiment, the reel portion 2200 includes one or more curves 2204 which each
have a curve radius that is designed to prevent the formation of a deformed region(s) in the leader line 1200. Therefore the radius / radii of the curve(s) 2204 allow the leader line 1200 to bend or flex
about the curve(s) 2204 without creating a deformed region(s).
As described above, the reel portion 2200 may be formed in any other suitable shape, wherein these other shaped reel portions may include the curve(s) 2204 described above which limit / prevent the
formation of deformed regions in the leader line 1200.
The reel portion 2200 may be relatively rigid. In the embodiment illustrated the reel portion 2200
may be made from a relatively rigid material. However, the reel portion 2200 may be relatively
flexible. In these alternate embodiments, the reel portion 2200 may be made from a flexible,
resilient material.
In the illustrated embodiment, the reel portion 2200 and the body portion 2100 are formed from the
same material as each other.
JAWS Ref: 314820AU
In the embodiment of Figures IC to 3 the reel portion 2200 and the body portion 2100 are integrally
formed with each other. For example, they may be formed as a single unit e.g. by injection moulding
to form a single unit.
However, the reel portion 2200 and the body portion 2100 may be separately formed and
permanently or releasably attached in use to each other. For example, the reel and body portions
2200, 2100 may be separately formed and co-moulded to each other, or formed separately and
attached to each other using adhesives.
.0 The holder 2000 includes a first side 2002 (rear side) and a second side 2004 (front side). In use the
first side 2002 may be positioned to face a support structure and the second side 2004 may be
positioned to face away from the support structure. As illustrated in Figure IC, the surface 2102 is
positioned on the second side 2004. Having the surface 2102 on the second side 2004 facilitates the
lure portion 1100 facing away from the support structure when the two components are attached
.5 together. This allows the lure portion to be more easily inspected by a person and can improve
usability of holder 2000. In addition, the lure 1000 may be easily returned to storage or removed
from the holder 2000.
As illustrated, the channel 2202 faces laterally i.e. extends around the lateral sides of the holder 2000.
The holder 2000 is designed so that the leader line 1200 can be easily attached to or removed from
the holder 2000. It may also allow the leader line 1200 to be stored apart from but proximate to the lure portion 1100 and in a way which limits or prevents tangling of the leader line 1200.
In alternate embodiments of the present technology, the holder 2000 is configured to facilitate more
than one fishing lure being attached thereto. For instance, the holder 2000 can include more than
one reel portion 2200 and surface 2102. The respective leader line 1200 can be wound about a
respective reel portion while the lure portion 1100 can be positioned against the respective surface.
For instance, the base 2600 can provide the surface, and the reel portion can be located between
the base and the reel portion 2200 and surface 2102. Fastener(s) 2300 can be used to attach the lure
portions 1100 and the leader lines 1200 to the holder 2000.
JAWS Ref: 314820AU
The fastener 2300 can be attached to the holder 2000, e.g. to one or more of the body portion 2100
and the reel portion2200. As illustrated, the fastener 2300 is in the form of one or more straps 2302.
In the embodiment illustrated, the strap(s) 2302 are made from fabric e.g. an elastic material, or a
plastic material. However, the strap(s) 2302 may be made from other suitable materials.
In alternate embodiments, the fastener may include other suitable fasteners to hold the lure portion
1100 on the surface 2102. In one example, the fastener may include one or more of a tie and band,
e.g. an elastic band which can be stretched around the holder to hold the lure portion against the
surface. In another example, the holder 2000 may include a clip, sleeve, shelf or pocket configured
.0 to receive and hold the lure portion 1100. In yet another example, the body portion may include a
notch configured to receive a portion of the leader line which is proximal to the lure portion which
can be, in use, connected to the leader line. The notch may be configured to hold the lure portion
and/or the leader line in place on the holder.
.5 As illustrated in Figures 1A to 3, the strap(s) 2302 include a first strap portion 2304a and a second
strap portion 2304b which can be releasably attached to each other. For instance, the first strap
portion 2304a and the second strap portion 2304b include a hook and loop fasteners, e.g. VelcroMT
, to facilitate their releasable attachment. However, other type(s) of fasteners may be used to
facilitate attachment between the strap portions 2304a, 2304b.
In the illustrated embodiment, the length of the fastener 2300 may be adjustable. Referring to
Figure IC, the first strap portion 2304a and the second strap portion 2304b may be moved relative
to each other to adjust the tension and thereby help hold the lure portion 1100 in place.
The holder 2000 also includes a line fastener 2500 that is configured to hold the leader line 1200 on
the reel portion 2200, e.g. when wound around the reel portion 2200. As illustrated in Figures 1A to
3, the line fastener 2500 is a separate component which includes one or more straps 2502. The
strap(s) 2502 include a first strap portion 2504a and a second strap portion 2504b which can be
releasably attached to each other.
In an alternative embodiment not shown in the Figures, the fastener 2300 may be configured to also
hold the leader line 1200 on the reel portion 2200.
JAWS Ref: 314820AU
In the embodiment illustrated in Figure IC, the channel 2202 includes one or more void regions
2206. In other words, the channel 2202 has surfaces in a superior region and in an inferior region of
the holder 2000 which come into contact with the leader line 1200, but the void region(s) 2206 do
not contact the leader line 1200 so that the leader line 1200 extends over the void region(s) 2206.
This may assist in reducing the amount of material required to manufacture the reel portion 2200
and the holder 2000.
As illustrated in Figures IC and 3, the void regions(s) 2206 is / are configured to receive a portion of
the fastener 2300. As illustrated, a portion of the fastener 2300, e.g. in the form of strap(s) 2302,
.0 2502, extends through the void region(s) 2206.
Referring to Figures 1A and 3, the body portion 2100 may include one or more openings 2104
through which a portion of the straps 2302 may extend.
.5 As illustrated in the embodiment shown in Figures IC and 2, the holder 2000 includes an attachment
component 2400 to facilitate its attachment to the support structure. Preferably, the attachment
component 2400 may be configured to facilitate releasable attachment of the holder 2000 to a
portion of the support structure.
However, the attachment component 2400 may be configured to facilitate the holder 2000 to be
permanently attached to the support structure. For example, the holder 2000 may be fixed to the
other surface by using an adhesive or a fastener. It is to be appreciated that in other forms the
holder 2000 may include two or more attachment components 2400.
In the illustrated embodiment, the attachment component 2400 may be integrally formed with the
holder 2000. However, the attachment component(s) may be separately formed and permanently or
releasably attached to the holder 2000.
However, alternatives for the attachment component are envisaged. For instance, the body portion
and the support structure may each be provided with a magnet, and in use the magnets interact to
releasably secure the holder to the support structure.
As illustrated in Figures 1A, IC and 2, the attachment component 2400(s) include one or more
hangers to hang the holder 2000 from the support structure. As illustrated, the hanger(s) include(s)
JAWS Ref: 314820AU
an opening 2402 in the body portion 2100. However, the hanger(s) may include a hook provided to
the holder 2000, e.g. to the body portion 2100, and/or the hanger(s) may include another type of
structure configured to receive and hang from the support structure. In use, the opening 2402 or
hook can receive a corresponding peg (not shown in the drawings) which is provided on the support
structure to thereby hang the holder 2000 to the support structure.
As illustrated, the attachment component 2400 is positioned at least one of superior and inferior to
the reel portion 2200. In the embodiment illustrated, the base 2600 can include the attachment
component 2400. This allows the base 2600 to be attached to the support structure and the reel
.0 portion 2200 and surface 2102 may face away from the base 2600.
In alternate embodiments, the attachment component 2400 may be formed by the holder 2000, e.g.
by one or more of the body portion 2100, the reel portion 2200, the fastener 2300 and the line
fastener 2500. For instance, the strap(s) 2302, 2502 may facilitate hanging. In further alternate
.5 embodiments, the hanger(s) may be formed by one or more of the lure portion 1100 and the line
portion 1200. For example, the lure 1000 may include one or more hooks 1300 as illustrated in
Figure 1A, wherein the hanger(s) may be formed by the hook(s) 1300.
Alternative embodiment of a holderfor afishing lure
Referring now to Figures 4 to 14 which show a holder 2000A according to an alternative embodiment
of the present technology. Like references refer to like components.
In the embodiment of Figures 4 to 14, a fastener (not shown in Figures 4 to 13) can be associated with the holder 2000A in use. The fastener 2300 is separately formed and can be permanently or releasably
attached to the holder 2000A.
The surface 2102 is recessed, e.g. it is substantially concave, as is best illustrated in Figures 12 and 14.
The shape of the channel 2202 is substantially curved, e.g. it is inwardly concave, as is best illustrated
in Figures 12 and 14. However, the channel 2202 may have any other suitable shape, e.g. rectangular,
square, or irregular.
In the embodiment of Figures 4 to 6, the fastener 2300 e.g. is in the form of strap(s) 2302 and
extends around the lateral edges of the surface 2102 when in use.
JAWS Ref: 314820AU
The fastener 2300 can be attached to the holder 2000A. An attachment component (not shown in
the drawings) can be used to attach part(s) of the fastener 2300 to the holder 2000A. The
attachment component can include a rivet or another type of attachment component to attach
part(s) of the strap(s) 2302, 2502 to the holder 2000A.
Referring to Figures 5, 7 and 12, one or more apertures 2208 may be formed in the holder 2000A,
wherein the aperture(s) 2208 is/are configured to receive part of the rivet (not shown in the
drawings). As illustrated, the aperture(s) 2208 is/are formed in the base 2600 in the region of the
.0 void region(s) 2206. However, the apertures 2208 may be formed in other part(s) of the holder 2000.
