Description
1 PATENTS ACT 1990 Section 29 Innovation Patent Applicant & Inventor: Jessica Kathryn Louise Jackson Address: 62 Grosvenor Street Pimlico Queensland 4812 Australia Priority claimed: 2014904148 filed in Australia 17 October 2015 Title of Invention: ANTI-THEFT BAG The applicant applies for the grant of a patent for the invention described in the accompanying complete patent specification: The following is a full description of the invention including the best method of performing the invention, known to us: snorPA707771 5 2 ANTI-THEFT BAG [0001] The present invention relates to an anti-theft bag or satchel. [0002] The average person generally carries with them a number of valuable items for use while they are out and about. For example, a mobile phone, a wallet or purse containing cash and credit and debit cards, and perhaps other electronic devices such as a tablet computer, e-reader or music player. The combined value of the contents of a handbag or rucksack is often underestimated and may run to hundreds or thousands of dollars. If these valuable items are stolen there is significant distress to the person as credit and debit cards must be cancelled and reissued, and phones replaced. Data, music and photographs on the electronic devices may be very valuable or irreplaceable if not sufficiently backed-up externally. [0003] Theft, is an unfortunate part of life but occurs on a daily basis anywhere people congregate, for example markets and shopping centres. Many people are unaware of the danger and leave their hand or other bag containing their wallet and valuables either unattended, open or lying around loose on the floor or table. A thief can then simply seize the opportunity and when the owner is not looking pick up the bag and take it away. Or the thief may access the open bag and relieve the owner of their purse. The owner may be talking with friends or engrossed elsewhere and may not realise for many minutes that the bag or purse has been stolen, by then it is too late and the thief has gone. The theft will be very distressing to the person, and it will be most inconvenient and expensive to replace the contents. [0004] The problem of theft is compounded if the person is elderly, for example. Sadly, it is a known fact that bag snatchers target elderly people as bags can readily be pulled from them and the bag taken rapidly away with little risk of them taking chase. During these attacks the elderly person may snorPA707771 5 3 be seriously injured as the bag is ripped from them causing bruising or even breaking an arm or wrist in the struggle. Most seriously, a person may be pushed to the ground in the attack, which may lead to serious injury, such as a broken hip in the elderly. [0005] One way in which a person tries to keep their bag safe is to sling it tightly to their body to prevent a person from snatching the bag and running away. Holding on to the bag tightly can be dangerous as in the case of the bag being snatched there is a higher likelihood that the person will be pulled to the ground and injured. Again if the person is elderly, holding on to the bag tightly can make injury more likely. Alternatively, a person may attach their bag to themselves, but this further increases the risk of injury if a thief is determined to rip it from them, bruising, grazing or cutting skin. [0006] The inventor has, through careful research into the problem and design experimentation, developed an anti-theft bag that is a significant improvement in the art. The subject invention decreases the likelihood that a thief will successfully steal the bag as well as reducing the chances of injury to the person while preventing the theft. At the same time the bag is an attractive and practical item that can be used every day with peace of mind and improved personal safety. [0007] The following describes a non-limiting example of the invention being used with reference to a "hand-bag" style bag. Clearly the subject invention is applicable not only to handbags, but any type of bags including satchels, rucksacks, fanny packs or bum bags, shoulder bags, kid's bags, shopping bags and to smaller items such as a wallet or purse. It is not intended that the invention be limited in any way to handbags. qnprPA707771 5 4 [0008] For clarity, any prior art referred to herein, does not constitute an admission that the prior art forms part of the common general knowledge, in Australia or elsewhere. [0009] It is an object of the present invention to provide an anti-theft bag that at least ameliorates one or more of the aforementioned problems of the prior art. [0010] Accordingly, the present invention provides an anti-theft bag, including: a body for containing items; a first chain attachable to the body and to an item to be carried within the body; and a second chain attachable to the body for attachment to a person or object outside of the body, wherein use of the bag substantially prevents theft of the item within the bag and the bag itself. [0011] Accordingly, the present invention provides in a further aspect an anti theft bag including: a body for containing items; an alarm associated with the body; an alarm activation for activating the alarm, including a first part associated with the body of the bag and a second part associated with the first part, wherein, in use, a person is alerted to the attempted theft by the activation of the alarm when the first and second part are substantially separated. The first aspect and the second aspect of the invention may be combined. An anti-theft bag, including: a body for containing items; snorPA707771 5 5 a first chain attachable to the body and to an item to be carried within the body; and a second chain attachable to the body for attachment to a person or object outside of the body; an alarm associated with the body; an alarm activation for activating the alarm, including a first part associated with the body of the bag and a second part associated with the first part, wherein use of the bag substantially prevents theft of the item within the bag and the bag itself and a person is alerted to the attempted theft by the activation of the alarm when the first and second part are substantially separated. [0012] The alarm may instead be associated with a specific object within the bag. [0013] The anti-theft bag may be a satchel, rucksack, handbag, wallet or clutch, for example. The anti-theft bag may be any kind of bag it is desired to carry and keep the contents secure. The anti-theft bag may be useful to protect specific contents items from being stolen. The anti-theft bag may be useful to protect the whole bag from being stolen or separated from the owner in some way. The anti-theft bag preferably, acts to substantially prevent from a specific item or items from being stolen and from the bag itself being removed. Preferably, the anti-theft bag incorporates numerous anti-theft and or personal safety devices. [0014] The body of the bag may take any suitable form. The body of the bag may be similar to a satchel or a known form. The body of the bag may be similar to a handbag of a known form. The body of the bag may be made of leather. The body of the bag may be made of a tear resistant material. The body of the bag may be made of a natural or synthetic material. The body of snorPA707771 5 6 the bag may be made of cloth or plastic. The body of the bag may be made of a combination of suitable strong materials. [0015] Preferably, the body includes pockets for containing various items it may be desired to carry. The body may include pockets on the inside, outside or both. The pockets may take any suitable form. Preferably, one or more pocket is included in which valuable items can be secured. Preferably, one or pocket is included for containing a Global Positioning System "GPS". One or more pocket may be adapted for receipt of a personal security alarm. Pockets may be included for security, decorative, or functional reasons as desired by the user. Preferably, several pockets are included with different functions. [0016] The first chain may take any suitable form to secure an object to the body of the bag. Preferably, the first chain is made of a strong metal chain. The first chain may alternatively be a strap, or cord strong enough to resist breakage. Preferably, the first chain has a first end and a second end and the first end is attached to the body of the bag and the second end to an item. Both ends may be strongly but removably attached. Preferably, the first end of the first chain is permanently attached to the bag and the chain is of a suitable length to enable the item to be comfortably removed for use. For example, to remove cards and take cash out of the Automatic Teller Machine "ATM" without the need to remove the chain. Although a chain is described, any long strip or piece of material could be used instead provided it can be secured and is strong. Preferably, the length of chain is sufficient to allow use of the item, but without the item being taken out of reach of the user. Any of the pockets described may be a concealed pocket. [0017] The end of the first chain attachable to the bag may be attachable inside a pocket. Preferably, the end of the first chain attachable to the bag is attached inside a hidden pocket. For example, a metal loop may be included to which the chain is strongly attachable and the attachment point is hidden snorPA707771 5 7 within a hidden pocket, or under a flap. In one form of the invention, the item may be retained in a pocket within the bag during use, while attached to the first chain. In this form of the invention the secured item is kept out of sight until required. The chain may be permanently secured to the item and is retained within the pocket when the item is not in use. [0018] Where the attachment is removable, any suitable removable fixing may be used. For example, a metal clip, or plastic buckle may be examples, or a screw barrel fitting perhaps. [0019] The second chain may take any suitable form. The second chain may be a metal chain. In another form of the invention the chain may be a strap, cord, covered chain, belt or any suitable means to connect the bag to a person or object. Although a chain is described, any long strip or piece of material could be used instead provided it can be secured and is strong. The chain may be made of any suitable material. The suitable materials may include, metal, plastic, wood such as wooded chain, or any suitable combination of materials. [0020] The second chain may be attached at any location on the bag. Preferably, the attachment is a strong attachment. The attachment may be a removable attachment. The attachment of the second chain to the bag may be inside a pocket. The attachment of the second chain to the bag may be inside a hidden pocket or under a flap. Preferably, the points of attachment of the chains cannot be readily observed during normal use of the bag. [0021] The ends of the second chain may include any kind of suitable fixing or connector. Preferably, one end of the second chain is secured to the bag. The securing to the bag may be permanent. The securing to the bag may occur during manufacture. The other end of the second chain is adapted to attach to an object or person to substantially prevent unauthorised removal of the bag. Preferably, the nature of the second chain is such as to be snorPA707771 5 8 conveniently used when using the bag, and does not in any way inconvenience the user. [0022] Where the second chain is attached to a person the movement on the chain will alert the person that the bag is being removed and so the theft should be prevented. Most preferably, the bag is secured by the second chain to an object. In this way there is a reduced chance of injury should the bag be snatched by a would-be thief. Preferably, the second chain is adapted to strongly and removably attach the bag to an object to substantially prevent theft. Further security such as a lock could be included with the second chain whereby only an authorised user may remove the second chain from being secured to the object. The object may be any suitable object. The object may be chosen from the following group: building; chair; desk; pillar; shopping trolley; table; or similar fixed object. [0023] Preferably, if the bag is pulled away from the object by a would-be thief the user will be alerted by an alarm within the bag. Preferably, alarms are installed whereby sudden or strong pulling on parts of the bag will activate an alarm. The alarm may include a very loud noise. Other alarms, such as messages to the security services or lights could also be included. [0024] Most preferably, the anti-theft bag substantially prevents unauthorised removal of the item from the bag or the bag in total. Preferably, the bag is prevented from being detached from the object. Preferably, the combination of the two security devices means the bag and valuable item are secured in two different ways. [0025] In one form of the invention an alarm is activated when the first part and second part are separated. The alarm may be activated when there is pull on a chain and the end is pulled away from the alarm of the bag. The alarm may take any suitable form. The alarm is preferably of a form which causes a very loud noise if two parts are separated. Therefore, the alarm snorPA707771 5 9 may be activated when an item is pulled from the bag to which the alarm is attached. Or the bag may be attached to the alarm and as the first part and second part are detached an alarm may be activated. The first part and second part may be adapted to cause any kind of alarm on separation including sound, lights or a call to emergency services. The alarm may be activated not on separation of two parts as such but the depression of a button, pulling on a pin or any other suitable activation. The alarm may be activated in any suitable manner. The suitable manner may be through unauthorised access, pulling or removal from the object or person. [0026] The invention will now be described in connection with a non-limiting preferred embodiment with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: [0027] Figure 1 is a perspective view of an anti-theft satchel according to a preferred embodiment of the invention, with the flap closed and the outside chain extended, as in use; [0028] Figure 2 is a detailed, enlarged view of the strap of the satchel of Figure 1 illustrating the reinforcement; [0029] Figure 3 is a view from above of the satchel of Figures 1 and 2, with the flap opened to reveal inside the satchel; [0030] Figure 4 is a perspective view from above of the satchel of Figures 1 to 3 illustrating the inside chain extended, ready for use; [0031] Figure 5 is a detailed enlarged view of the internal flap, inside chain and attachment of Figure 4 and indicating the position of the magnet; [0032] Figure 6 is the view of Figure 5 with the key chain exposed; snorPA707771 5 10 [0033] Figure 7 is the view of Figures 5 and 6 with the chain lifted to show the hidden pocket; [0034] Figure 8 is a front view of the satchel of Figures 1 to 7; [0035] Figure 9 is a back view of the satchel of Figures 1 to 8; [0036] Figure 10 is an end view of the satchel of Figures 1 to 9, illustrating an end flap; [0037] Figure 11 is another end view of the satchel of Figures 1 to 10, illustrating another end flap; [0038] Figure 12 is a side view of the mesh satchel inside the external flap of Figure 11; and [0039] Figure 13 is a view from above of a personal alarm as may be used inside the mesh satchel of Figure 12. [0040] Referring to Figures 1 to 13, a preferred embodiment of the invention will be described, where anti-theft satchel 1 has body 10, with front 12, back 14, first side 16 and second side 18. Top flap 20 provides a cover or top to satchel 1, and strap 22 enables satchel 1 to be carried over the shoulder of a person (not shown) in a conventional manner. Body 10 is shown made of leather, with a sturdy lining both to act against slashing of satchel 1 to protect the contents. Use of a strong material is useful, but alternatives to leather may be used in other forms of the invention, such as imitation leather, plastic, canvas or cloth for example. [0041] The form of satchel 1 is of a conventional shoulder bag or satchel, but adapted to have the highly beneficial anti-theft features of the invention. The snorPA707771 5 11 invention is applicable to other forms of bag or satchel, such as a rucksack, shopping bag, messenger bag, laptop bag, clutch or in fact any form of bag where it may be desired to keep the contents secure. The invention is also very useful for securing a purse or wallet, within a bag or to a person to act against theft. It is a great benefit of satchel 1 that it is adapted to prevent theft of bag 1 itself and of a purse or wallet secured within satchel 1, as described further below. [0042] Satchel 1 is of a suitable form for everyday use such as when going out, to university, work or shopping, for example. Body 10 is a good size to contain a number of items, such as small portable electronic devices, a book, an umbrella, scarf, purse, shopping list, note pad, any of the numerous items a person may wish to carry with them when out and about. Top flap 20 readily covers and closes satchel 1 with a magnetic closure (not shown) of a known form; other closures could alternatively be used. Top flap 20 could also be replaced by a zip, buttons, toggles or clips to close the top of satchel 1, as is suitable to the use and desired look of satchel 1. [0043] Satchel 1 as illustrated has body 10 of a four sided format with front 12 and back 14 joined by first side 16 and second side 18 to provide a sturdy satchel structure that can safely contain numerous items. Clearly, the proportions of front 12, back 14 and first and second sides 16 and 18 can be varied to suit the purpose of satchel 1 and the desired look. Satchel 1 may be instead made of a continuous piece of material, be round, irregular or in fact any shape that a person may find convenient or desirable for satchel 1. [0044] Strap 22 is a reinforced leather strap with a mesh inner as is shown in particular in Figure 2. The reinforcing of strap 22 acts against damage through wear and tear and in the event of a thief trying to steal the satchel by cutting strap 22. Instead of reinforcing a metal chain strap, plaited leather or canvas strapping could be used to provide a strong strap to carry satchel 1. qnPrPA707771 5 12 [0045] Strap 22 is attached to body 1 in a conventional manner using metal loops 24, one attached on either side of body 10 so strap 22 spans satchel 1. Strap 22 also includes buckle 26 to enable the length of strap 22 to be adjusted as is suitable for the person carrying satchel 1. [0046] Front 12 of body 10 includes first pocket 28 with flap 30 and second pocket 32 with flap 34 as are useful for carrying small items. Each of pockets 28 and 32 includes a magnetic closure mechanism (not shown) of a known form to securely close flaps 30 and 34, respectively. Other closures and forms of pockets 28 and 32 may alternatively be used. Front 12 also includes zipped pocket 36 for containing other small items in a secure manner. [0047] Referring in particular to Figure 3, a further zipped pocket 38 is included inside, again for securely containing small items, and to keep them segregated from other items in satchel 1. Base 40 can also be seen in Figure 3 surrounded by front 12, back 14 and sides 16 and 18. Base 40 includes reinforcing to assist satchel 1 to keep shape and to protect against cutting and unauthorised access. The reinforcing is not shown but is in the form of a rectangle of rigid plastic that is maintained in base 40. The reinforcing is to assist satchel 1 to maintain shape and to act against unauthorised access to satchel 1 through base 40. As satchel 1 is made more secure by the described anti-theft measures, it is also important to make sure that satchel 1 itself is structurally strong. Otherwise a would-be thief may damage satchel 1 to access the contents directly, rather than making away with the whole satchel 1 itself. Figure 3 also illustrates internal pockets 42 and 44 into which items can be slipped for ready access. [0048] Referring in particular to Figures 4 to 7, inside chain 46 can be seen attached under flap 48 and when not in use can be kept therein. Inside chain 46 is disclosed as a linked metal chain of an aesthetically pleasing design; different colours or grades of metal can be used to be in keeping with the overall design of satchel 1. Chain 46 is sturdy but also lightweight so as not snorPA707771 5 13 to unduly increase the overall weight of satchel 1. Chain 46 is attached under flap 48 which hides D-ring 50 on a secure tab to which one end of chain 46 can be securely attached. Chain 46 may be removably attached to D-ring 50 or otherwise secured. Alternative means such as a chain, loop or material tab are examples of other forms of attachment suitable for attaching chain 46 to satchel 1. Magnetic closure 52, indicated by a dotted line on Figures 5 and 6, assists to close flap 48 to over the loop to which the end of chain 46 is attached. In use chain 46 is permanently attached to loop 50 and when not in use chain 46 can be kept in body 10 of satchel 1. Internal zippered pocket 54 is also hidden by flap 48 in which is kept a Global Positioning System ("GPS") locator. Use of a GPS locator is very useful in the case of satchel 1 being stolen or misplaced as the GPS locator allows the location of satchel 1 to be ascertained. Software and applications for mobile devices enable the location of particular GPS locators to be known and the information used to find satchel 1 or provided to the police to assist in recovery and prosecution of the thief. GPS of course can also be used to assist in location of government personnel, for example. Use of a zip to close pocket 54 is useful as it allows other items to be kept particularly securely under flap 48. However, a sealed pocket could be used instead of the GPS locator could be installed permanently in satchel 1, in any suitable part of satchel 1. [0049] Referring in particular to Figures 8 to 11, further features to satchel 1 are shown, including zippered pocket 56 and flaps 58 and 60. Flaps 58 and 60 are shown one on each end of body 10 of satchel 1. Flap 60 is closed by magnetic closure 62 of a known form, indicated by a dotted line on Figure 11. Concealing security features, through flaps and hidden pockets improves the security of the bag. The particular shape, size and configuration of the various pockets and flaps and manner of their closure can readily be varied to suit the particular use of satchel 1 and the desired overall look of the item. qnPrPA707771 5 14 [0050] Referring to Figures 12 and 13, zippered mesh pocket 64 under flap 60 is illustrated. Eyelet 66 allows ready access to cord 68 of personal alarm 70. Zipped mesh pocket 64 is hidden from view in use by flap 60 but is still readily accessible. If a person feels nervous about a situation it is easy to slip a hand under flap 60 and hold cord 68 of personal alarm 70 or access personal alarm 70 directly. In the case of personal danger or the need to activate the personal alarm cord 68 can be pulled and the very loud alarm activated. It is envisaged that personal security alarms that make an extremely loud noise could be included so that in the case of an emergency, personal danger or attempted theft that the alarm could be activated and anyone in the vicinity will be alerted to the person's need for assistance. A person health alert or alarm could be included so if a person needs medical assistance the alarm can be readily activated. Personal health alarms generally have a back to base call system so that the emergency services or nursing staff can be alerted to the need of the person as quick as possible and assistance sent. Inclusion of the GPS could assist here, assuming that satchel 1 and the person are at the same place. [0051] Throughout the magnetics used are rare earth magnetics as they have been found to be particularly useful; alternative magnetic or other forms of closures could also be used. [0052] Security can be included such as to prevent data capture from credit cards while in the satchel or purse. These devices of a known form can be incorporated in the purse, or pocket to protect against data theft or payment being taken from a credit card without permission of the owner. [0053] A most important feature of the invention is outside chain 72 is attached to one of metal loops 24 by a further metal loop 74 by one end and has clip 76 at the other end. Chain 72 is for use to attach satchel 1 to the person or to an object such as a shopping trolley or table leg at a restaurant snorPA707771 5 15 to prevent unauthorised access. As for inside chain 46 the choice of metal and look is to match the overall look and style of satchel 1. Strong metal chain links are useful as they do not break easily and will remain strong for the life of satchel 1. Any attempt to cut chain 46 or 72 would be unsuccessful unless bolt cutters or other serious cutting equipment were available, unlikely at the location where the person is using satchel 1, such as a shopping centre. [0054] In use inside chain 46 is attached using clip 78 at the end to attach to an item to keep secure. Clip 78 can be secured to a purse, wallet, phone or other valuable which it is desired to secure within satchel 1. In this way clip 78 is attached to a loop or metal part of the item to be secured. The length of chain 46 is very important as rather than restraining the item within satchel 1, the valuable is free to be accessed, such as to use a card in an Automatic Teller Machine ("ATM"). Similarly, a security card for access to a building can be used without needing to remove the purse from the security chain, the purse can be simply moved closer to the security scan and then returned to satchel 1, being secure due to use of chain 46 the entire while. Nevertheless, should a potential thief attempt to remove the item to which chain 46 is attached they will be prevented. If the purse of wallet, for example, falls out of satchel 1, there is an added advantage that this will be discovered when satchel 1 is picked up as the purse or wallet will still be attached to satchel 1 and prevented from loss. [0055] Therefore, in use chain 46 and chain 72 together act to provide far improved security over the prior art in a secure satchel 1. Chain 46 attached to a purse acts to maintain the purse within satchel 1, while still allowing ready access such as to for swipe cards or ATM access even without taking the cards out of the purse. Chain 72 acts to prevent theft of satchel 1 itself by securing satchel 1 to the person or more preferably to an object so that an attempt to snatch the satchel will be thwarted. qnPrPA707771 5 16 [0056] Further security is provided by not only securing a purse or wallet within satchel 1, but also attaching satchel 1 to a person or object to prevent theft. A person may be enjoying lunch with friends and knows that during lunch she does not wish to worry about her satchel. The person can attach satchel 1 to a table leg during lunch by taking outside chain 72 and threading the chain around the fixed object and attaching the loose end and clip 76 to metal loop 24. The person may choose to attach clip 76 to the same or different loop 24 to where the other end of chain 72 is already strongly attached. [0057] Another use may be where a person wishes to use chain 72 so that if a person tries to snatch satchel 1, they cannot do so as chain 72 is attached about the person. In one form of use chain 72 can be used with personal alarm 70 so if chain 72 is pulled on strongly personal alarm 70 is activated. [0058] The combination of secure chains and other safety anti-theft features provide a significant improvement over the prior art. [0059] It will be apparent to a person skilled in the art that changes may be made to the embodiment disclosed herein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention in its various aspects. qnprPA707771 5 17 REFERENCE SIGNS LIST: 1 Anti-theft satchel 44 Internal pocket (R) 10 Body 46 Chain (inside) 12 Front 48 Flap for chain 14 Back 50 D-ring 16 First side (L) 52 Magnetic closure 18 Second side (R) 54 Internal pocket 20 Top flap 56 Zippered back pocket 22 Strap 58 Flap 16 24 Metal loops 60 Flap 18 26 Buckle 62 Magnetic closure 28 First pocket (front) 64 Zippered mesh pocket 30 Flap (first pocket (front)) 66 Eyelet 32 Second pocket (front) 68 Cord 34 Flap (second pocket (front)) 70 Personal alarm 36 Zippered pocket (external) 72 Chain (outside) 38 Zippered pocket (internal) 74 Loop (to attach chain) 40 Base 76 Clip at end of 72 42 Internal pocket (L) 78 Clip end of 46 qnprPA707771 5
