AUSTRALIA Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION Innovation Patent Applicant(s): BRADKEN RESOURCES PTY LIMITED Invention Title: WEAR PLATE The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method for performing it known to me/us: - 2 WEAR PLATE Field of the Invention 5 The present invention relates to a wear plate for use as a lining required to provide, a sacrificial surface for lining chutes and other structures particularly used in mineral processing and the mining industry. 10 Background of the Invention Whereas structural strength can be achieved with suitable grades of steel for the primary structure, in use a highly abrasive material moves over the surface which 15 needs to be protected by a sacrificial wear plate which can be periodically removed and replaced. Summary of the Invention 20 The present invention in one aspect is directed to a wear plate for use for lining structures in mineral handling equipment, the wear plate having a mounting plate from which a multiplicity of screw-threaded studs extend for passage 25 through mounting holes in the structure and to be secured by nuts, and a surface plate bonded to and covering the mounting plate on its side opposite to the screw-threaded studs and being of wear resistant material, the shape of 30 the wear plate being arranged to cooperate with a multiplicity of similar wear plates to cover a structure having an array of holes therethrough for receiving the screw-threaded studs.
- 3 In preferred embodiments, the mounting plate is of smaller dimensions than the surface plate and the surface plate has a recess which accommodates the mounting plate, s the surface plate being more extensive than the mounting plate. The shape and configuration of the wear plate can be altered to suit the installation requirements. In one 10 embodiment, the wear plate is of square overall configuration and typically has an array of screw-threaded studs in a square array, the surface plate having a dimension so that its edges extend half way between the screw holes in the structure. 15 Another embodiment utilises a configuration where the surface plate is of a hexagon shape so that the multiplicity of such wear plates can fit adjacent to one another to cover the surface of a structure. For example, 20 a hexagon shape may be used with advantage with the mounting plate in each case conveniently being square and carrying four screw-threaded studs in a square array to fit mounting holes on a structure. 25 Conveniently, the hexagon shape has first and second opposed sides which are relatively short and have a length substantially the same as the spacing between the screw-threaded studs whereas the other sides of the hexagon are longer. 30 For example, where a square array of holes is provided in the structure at centres of about 152mm, then the sides of the hexagon which are parallel to the array -4 of holes are also about 152mm long the sides disposed as an angle of the array are about 318mm long. In the case of the square surface plates, then the 5 dimensions can be about 300mm x 300mm. Typically, embodiments of the invention use Ni-Hard material for the surface plate and especially Type 4 Ni-Hard is preferred as it has a martensitic white iron 10 microstructure which is highly resistant to abrasion and also provides resistance to impact forces. The mounting plate is typically of a suitable steel such as mild steel. 15 The hexagon array has been found to offer advantage in terms of wear characteristics due to the lack of any substantial joints between adjacent wear plates aligning with the direction of material movement. 20 In another aspect, the invention extends to a structure having a wear resistant facing using wear plates in any of the forms described herein; and wherein the screw-threaded studs of the wear plate 25 extend through respective holes in the structure to secure the wear plates for a period of service by the application of nuts to the free ends of the studs. Detailed Description of the Drawings 30 The invention will be further illustrated by reference to examples now described with reference to the accompanying drawings of which: - 5 Figure 1 is a perspective view of a first embodiment of wear plate; Figure 2 is a front view of the wear plate; Figure 3 is a side view of the wear plate; 5 Figure 4 is a rear view of the wear plate; Figure 5 is a sectional view taken along the line A-A of Figure 4; Figure 6 is a view showing a typical layout of wear plates in accordance with Figures 1 to 5 with two 10 illustrated wear plates being one half of the illustrated wear plate; Figure 7 is a view of the second embodiment being a typical layout of wear plates according to a second embodiment and being hexagonal or half hexagonal wear 15 plates; Figure 8 is a perspective view of a hexagonal wear plate; Figure 9 is a front view of the wear plate of Figure 8; 20 Figure 10 is a side view of the wear plate of Figure 8; Figure 11 is a rear view of the wear plate of Figure 8; and Figure 12 is a sectional view taken along the line 25 AA-AA of Figure 11. Description of Specific Embodiments The wear plate of the first embodiment comprises a 30 mild steel mounting plate 10 having a square array of four threaded studs 12 shown schematically in the drawing, and welded to the mounting plate 10. The wear plate also comprises a sacrificial surface plate 14 having a recess -6 in its rear face and into which the mounting plate 10 fits, so in the rear face the mounting plate 10 is flush with a peripheral portion 16 of the surface plate 14. The surface plate 14 is typically of Ni-Hard Type 4 namely a 5 martensitic white iron. It will be noted that the distance 'X' marked on Figure 4 is double the distance 'Y' so that an array of wear plates can be fixed to a support structure as shown 10 in Figure 6. Figure 6 shows a multiplicity of wear plates 11 with, one row, half wear plates 13 provided. is Referring to the second embodiment of Figures 8 to 12 the same mounting plate 10 as in the first embodiment is utilised and optionally incorporates a decorative logo or trade mark 15. In this embodiment, an overall hexagonal shape is provided for the surface plate 20 and as most 20 clearly shown in Figure 9, there are two opposed short sides 21 having a length equivalent to the spacing of the studs 12 and these are longer angled sides 22 dimensioned with angled to form the typical array of Figure 7. 25 Figure 7 includes at each edge half wear plates 24 each having two studs for engaging in holes in the substrate. Thus, the substrate has a square array of holes. 30 The wear plates in both embodiments are sacrificial and after a period of service are removed and replaced with new components.
Claims (5)
1. A wear plate for use for lining structures in mineral handling equipment, 5 the wear plate having a mounting plate from which a multiplicity of screw-threaded studs extend for passage through mounting holes in the structure and to be secured by nuts, and a surface plate bonded to and covering the 10 mounting plate on its side opposite to the screw-threaded studs and being of wear resistant material, the shape of the wear plate being arranged to cooperate with a multiplicity of similar wear plates to cover a structure having an array of holes therethrough for receiving the 15 screw-threaded studs.
2. A wear plate in accordance with Claim 1, wherein the mounting plate and surface plate are bonded together, the mounting plate is of mild steel and the surface plate is 20 of martensitic white iron.
3. A wear plate in accordance with Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the wear plate is of square overall configuration and has an array of screw-threaded studs in a square 25 array, the surface plate having a dimension so that its edges extend half way between the screw holes in the structure.
4. A wear plate in accordance with Claim 1 or Claim 2, 30 wherein the surface plate is of a hexagon shape so that the multiplicity of such wear plates can fit adjacent to one another to cover the surface of a structure. - 8
5. A wear plate substantially as herein described, with reference to the Figures 1 to 5 or Figures 8 to 12, or a structure protected by an array of either of such wear plates and the array being as described, respectively, 5 with reference to Figure 6 or Figure 7.
