Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION STANDARD PATENT DOWN LIGHT COVER TO GUARD AGAINST DUST, INSULATION AND COMBUSTIBLE MATERIAL The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of its utilization: IP Australia 0 9 JUN 2006
KI
DOWN LIGHT COVER TO GUARD AGAINST DUST, INSULATION AND COMBUSTIBLE MATERIAL This invention relates to a device to prevent dust, insulation and combustible material from impinging on the hot exterior side of the reflector of a halogen light and onto the glass surface of a normal bulb when either are enclosed in a ceiling, roof or other building cavity. Roof and ceiling cavities where down lights are often used collect dust and other debris such as leaves and paper. They also often have insulation material in them and have electrical cabling and wiring running through them. Halogen lights and light bulbs reach extremely high temperatures and when in contact with combustible materials can cause a fire. In addition certain types of insulation materials used in roof cavities are combustible or retain heat which when exposed to combustible materials can cause these materials to burn. Electrical cabling in contact with hot surfaces can cause the outer covering of the cables to melt and thus cause short circuiting and electrical fires.
There are also frequently gaps around halogen lights and light bulb fittings. Dust can fall into the rooms below through these gaps hence aggravating or causing respiratory or allergic disorders.
These problems are overcome by this invention which guards against insulation and combustible material from coming into contact with halogen lights and light bulbs and also in a large part stops dust falling through the gaps around light fittings.
The device consists of an aluminium, or any other heat and/or fire resistant material, solid ring of approximately 1.5mm to 2.5mm thickness and a height of approximately 13mm for halogen lamps, and for normal bulbs the height is 3cm greater than the height of the light unit. The circumference of the aluminium ring is such that there is 5cm clearance all around the light fitting. The ring is made of an aluminium strip whose ends are joined together to form a ring by welding or riveting. Alternatively, the ring may be made of a section of pipe or tubing. There is a small arch shaped cut-out at the base of the ring to allow the passage of an electric cable to the light source. The upper surface of the ring is covered with very fine wire mesh which is adhered to the ring with silicone. The aluminium and the wire mesh prevent combustible and insulation material impinging on the light source and at the same time are at such a distance from the light that they do not heat up either. The wire mesh also allows heat to rise through it whilst at the same time preventing dust and other substances from falling through gaps around the light source into the room below. The finer the wire mesh the less the amount of dust that can fall through it. The cover device can either be placed on the ceiling or adhered to it by silicone if necessary. To assist with the understanding of the invention reference is now made to the accompanying drawings which show the cover as applied to halogen light fittings and light bulb fittings. Fig. 1 shows one example of the cover. Fig.2 shows the cover as applied to a halogen light fitting. Fig.3 4 show the cover as applied to a halogen light fitting and a light bulb fitting respectively in cross-section. Referring to Fig.1 it can be seen that the ring(l) comprises of an aluminium strip welded together(2) to form a ring. The aluminium ring so formed has an arch shaped cut- out(3) through the full thickness of the aluminium ring and through which the electrical 2 cable will pass to the light fitting. The fine wire mesh(4) is circular in shape and has the same diameter as the outer diameter of the aluminium ring and is adherent to the top surface of the ring by silicone(5) or other means.
Fig.2 shows the cover invention in position in a roof cavity between two wooden beams(6) lying on top of the ceiling(7). The cover is shown lying surrounded by insulation material(8). A light unit(9) is shown in the centre of the cover device.
Fig.3 4 are cross-sectional representations so as to better illustrate the cover device. In Fig.3 an electrical cable(lO) is shown entering the cover device through the arch shaped cut-out to the halogen light( In Fig.4 the cable is seen to enter the cover device through the arch shaped cut-out to the normal light bulb fitting(12).
Claims (9)
1. A down light cover to guard against dust, insulation and combustible material comprising an aluminium or substituted material solid ring structure with adherent fine wire mesh on the upper surface of the solid aluminium ring, the ring having an arch shaped cut-out through which enters electrical cabling that powers the halogen light or other light bulb, this then to be placed over a light fitting in a roof, ceiling or other building cavity thus preventing said materials from impinging on a hot light source and also decreasing the amount of dust passing through gaps in the light fitting into a room below.
2. The down light cover to guard against dust, insulation and combustible material of claim 1 wherein the solid ring structure is made of metal or any heat and/or fire resistant material made from a strip which is welded or riveted together or joined in any other manner or is made from a section of pipe or tube of the metal or heat resistant material and the only gap in the solid ring structure being an arch shaped cut out.
3. The down light cover to guard against dust, insulation and combustible material of claim 1 wherein the solid aluminium ring is substituted for any other heat and/or fire resistant material.
4. The down light cover to guard against dust, insulation and combustible material of claim 1 wherein the wire mesh is adhered to the ring structure by silicone or any other material or joined to the ring by welding or soldering or using any adherent substance.
The down light cover to guard against dust, insulation and combustible material of claim 1 wherein the arch shaped cut-out through which enters the electrical cable that powers the halogen or other light bulb is of different shape or size.
6. The down light cover to guard against dust, insulation and combustible material of claim 1 wherein the light source is a halogen light or other light bulb.
7. The down light cover to guard against dust, insulation and combustible material of claim 1 wherein the height and diameter of the device is of varying sizes.
8. The down light cover to guard against dust, insulation and combustible material of claim 1 wherein the lower surface of the ring is fitted onto the upper surface of the ceiling by resting on it or adhered to it by silicone or other means of holding the ring in position.
9. A down light cover to guard against dust, insulation and combustible material as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings. Mr. Wolfgang Trumpelmann 19th April 2005
