Abstract

The invention relates to a plastic reel for taking up yarn which comprises two end-rings (1, 4) and a barrel (6), running between said rings (1, 4), which is arranged such that, over at least 80 % of the length thereof, it is axially rigid and, over at most 20 % of the length thereof, it is axially compressible. According to the invention, the barrel may be compressed by the amount corresponding to the lengthwise expansion due to operational heating, by the pressure generated by the tension in the barrel due to the same lengthwise expansion on operational heating. In this manner, said barrels, when under tension, do not suffer undesired deformation of the barrel due to expansion on operational heating, instead, said expansion is taken up by compensation sections (7), which merely extend over a small portion of the barrel length. In use the barrel behaves like a rigid casing.
