Abstract

Solid objects can be sorted using various automated processes; for example, optical sorters can recognize objects based on color, size, shape, etc. In the food industry, optical sorting can be used in the processing of harvested foods, such as potatoes, fruits, vegetables, nuts, etc. The present invention is directed in one embodiment to a system comprising: a plurality of electromechanically operated valves each including a coil configured to produce a magnetic field when electrical current is passed through the coil to operate the valve, and an optical transmitter to transmit at least one health characteristic of the valve as optical data bits comprising at least one of valve actuation cycles, valve identification, or valve firmware; a plurality of optical receivers each configured to receive an optical indication directly from a corresponding optical transmitter of each valve of the plurality of valves; a plurality of optic links optically coupling each optical transmitter of each valve of the plurality of valves to a corresponding optical receiver of the plurality of optical receivers; a current sensor configured to connect to an electrical circuit including the coil and a current source for supplying electrical current to the coil; and a controller communicatively coupled with the plurality of optical receivers and the current sensor, the controller configured to receive an optical indication from an optical transmitter of the plurality of optical transmitters while electrical current is passed through the coil of a corresponding valve of the plurality of valves, determine a plurality of rates of change of electrical current supplied to the coil, compare the optical indication and the plurality of rates of change to determine a health of the corresponding valve, and report the health of the corresponding valve.
