Abstract
Disclosed are an automated carton transfer system (100) and a method of operating an automated carton transfer system (100). The disclosure notes it is important to efficiently use mobile robotic storage and retrieval platforms to maintain overall system performance; therefore pre-sorting cartons in like lots optimises a cranes performance. The automated carton transfer system (100) includes a delivery conveyor (102), at least one pre-sort buffer conveyor, a plurality of outfeed positions (114), at least one conveying device (200), at least one carton actuation device, a plurality of storage racks, at least one robotic storage and retrieval platform (116) and at least one controller. The delivery conveyor (102) conveys a sequence of cartons (104a-104g). The at least one pre-sort buffer conveyor receives the sequence of cartons (104a-104g). The at least one conveying device (200) moves individual cartons (104a-104g) received from the delivery conveyor (102) along a series of loading positions (110) aligned with the outfeed positions (114). The at least one carton actuation devices moves a selected carton (104a-104g) from a loading position on the conveying device (200) to a selected outfeed position (114). The storage racks have a plurality of storage positions. The robotic storage and retrieval platform (116) loads cartons (104a-104g) from the outfeed positions (114) and transports them to selected storage positions within the storage racks. The controller controls operation of the pre-sort buffer conveyor and the at least one robotic storage and retrieval platform (116).
