Abstract

In the oxidn. of monoalkylbenzene cpds. (I) with O2-contg. gases, the reaction mixt. is subjected to a carboxylic ester forming reaction. Specifically the alcohols in the mixt. are esterified and the esters, derived from acids formed during the oxidn., are transesterified. The carboxylic acid used has is not 18C and is (a) a benzene carboxylic acid, esp. that formed during the oxidn. (e.g. benzoic acid where toluene is oxidised); or (b) a 2-4 C aliphatic carboxylic acid, esp. acetic acid. Where benzoic acid is used, this is allowed to remain in the oxidn. reaction and at least part is recycled to the reaction mixt. for use in the ester forming reaction.
