Abstract

Thermally insulating, cohesive cover material is produced by (a) converting metal silicate fibres and/or zirconium oxide fibres and/or titanium dioxide fibres to wadding or a fleece, (b) impregnating this pdt. with an aqs. silica soln. which has been previously made unstable by adding a sufficient amount of a base or salt of an alkali (ne earth) metal or an ammonium salt, so that the silica sol. gels in situ after impregnation within 24 hrs. after the electrolyte addition without heating, and (c) drying the cover material after gelling has occurred. Used for high temp insulation e.g. for furnace walls. The material is uniform and cohesive, and has a good mechanical strength and sufficient stiffness to remain bonded to surfaces.
