Abstract
In the prodn. of a fluid phase in which a first material (A) is obtained as a concentrate, by exchange (i.e. isotope exchange) at different temps. with a second material (B) between chemically different and physically separable first and second fluid phases (C and (D) respectively, each of which can contain (A) and (B), by the known technique of: - (A) passing (D) through the second and first units in that order of a pair of exchange units, while passing (C) in countercurrent flow contact with (D) in the first and second units respectively, (b) maintaining the two units at different temps. so that (D) is continuously enriched with (A) in the second unit and (A) is continuously stripped from it in the first unit, while (C) is continuously enriched with (A) in the first unit and (A) is continuously stripped from it in the second unit, (c) a stream of fluid is withdrawn between the first and second units, the improvement comprises (d) the volume of (C) in contact with (D) in the second unit is increased after (D) has attained a higher degree of enrichment, while the volume of (C) in contact with (D) on the first unit is reduced after (D) has attained a higher degree of impoverishment.
