Description

P134698NL00
Title: An exhaust after treatment assembly.
The invention relates to an exhaust after treatment assembly configured to cooperate with a diesel combustion engine according to the preamble of claim 1.
Such an exhaust after treatment assembly for an internal diesel combustion engine is for example known from WO17116329A1. In this known exhaust after treatment assembly for an internal diesel combustion engine the exhaust compartment housing defines an interior exhaust passage chamber between an inlet and an outlet, through which combustion exhaust is received and treated by e.g. diesel particulate filter (DPF) and a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) component disposed in the exhaust compartment housing. The DPF- and the DOC-components are removable arranged inside the exhaust compartment housing so that a maintenance operation can be carried out, e.g. to replace the components. In the known assembly the DPF- and the DOC-components are fixedly connected to each other (thereby together forming a cartridge) inside the exhaust compartment housing in operational state by means of a releasable clamping means formed by a V-clamp having a sealing means within the enclosure thereof, thereby providing impermeability at the interconnection region of the DPF- and the DOC-components. One of the DPF- and the DOC- components is fully enclosed by a treatment component housing which is supported by two reinforcement brackets to maintain a distance between the treatment component housing and the exhaust compartment housing, and thus to maintain a distance or a tolerance gap between the one of the
DPF- and the DOC-components and the exhaust compartment housing. The reinforcement brackets comprises a flat base portion fixedly attached to the exhaust compartment housing and a stopper section extending transverse from the flat base portion away from an inner surface of the exhaust compartment housing to keep the tolerance gap. Although in the known exhaust after treatment assembly the DPF- and the DOC-components are inter-connected in an impermeable manner the mounting construction of the cartridge inside the exhaust compartment housing by means of the treatment component housing and the two reinforcement brackets fixedly attached to the exhaust compartment housing in some cases in which large forces act upon the DPF- and the DOC-components, e.g. when the pressure difference over the DOC is higher than over the DPF due to a high HC- emission of the engine for instance as a result of a malfunctioning engine part, the DOC-component can move radially and axially within the exhaust compartment housing thereby causing damage to the DOC-component or the cartridge. Such DOC-component movement can also deteriorate the impermeable connection between the DPF- and the DOC-components. In addition, although the cartridge formed by the DPF- and the DOC- components is removable from the exhaust compartment housing, the removal thereof requires some additional operations since the stopper sections of the two reinforcement brackets fixedly attached to the exhaust compartment housing provide some obstacle for the V-clamp inter- connecting the DPF- and the DOC-components.
It is thus an object of the invention to provide an alternative exhaust after treatment assembly in which preferably DOC-component movement is at least reduced, in which prevention of leakage of exhaust gasses 1s improved and/or in which removal and replacement of a cartridge of the DPF- and the DOC-components is made more easy.
According to the invention at least one of these objects is obtained by providing an exhaust after treatment assembly configured to cooperate with a diesel combustion engine according to claim 1. By loosely positioning the metal pressing against the inner surface of the exhaust compartment housing, i.e. not fixedly attaching the distancing means to the exhaust compartment housing as disclosed in WO17116329A1, the distancing means is also removable from the exhaust compartment housing thereby facilitating removal of the cartridge. In addition, in operational state the resilient receiving profile presses and keeps the sealing means in direct contact with the inner surface of the exhaust compartment housing thereby dampening radial movement of the cartridge inside the exhaust compartment housing as a result of which damage of the cartridge due to such movement is at least reduced. Furthermore, due to the sealing means, which is formed from a temperature insensible material, i.e. a material having a very low thermal expansion coefficient and a low thermal conductivity, a sealing between the cartridge and the exhaust compartment housing is provided which provides a sealing additional to a sealing between the DOC- and DPF-components. By being braided the sealing means provides an additional resiliency to the resilient receiving profile thereby improving dampening of movement of the cartridge inside the exhaust compartment housing.
In an embodiment of an exhaust after treatment assembly according to the invention the material of the sealing means is inorganic and incombustible, in particular the sealing means are formed by silica rope packing, which makes the sealing means extremely suitable for use in an exhaust after treatment assembly with regard to the operation conditions.
In a further embodiment of an exhaust after treatment assembly according to the invention the cartridge is provided with a groove, preferably the groove being arranged in the diesel oxidation catalyst, and the resilient receiving profile is positioned in the groove. In this manner a correct positioning of the distancing means and the cartridge / diesel oxidation catalyst is obtained in a relatively easy manner.
In case the metal pressing is composed of three equal sections removal and replacement of the cartridge and the distancing means can be effected relatively easy. Preferably, the diesel particulate filter and the diesel oxidation catalyst are releasably inter-connected so that they can be removed/replaced separately.
The invention will be further explained with reference to the
Figure, in which a non-limiting exemplary embodiment of an exhaust after treatment assembly according to the invention is shown:
Fig. 1 schematically shows an embodiment of an exhaust after treatment assembly according to the invention in perspective;
Fig. 2 schematically shows a cartridge formed by a cylindrical diesel particulate filter and a cylindrical diesel oxidation catalyst of the embodiment of Figure 1 in perspective;
Fig. 3 schematically shows the exhaust compartment housing and the distancing means of the embodiment of Figure 1 in perspective;
Fig. 4 schematically shows the distancing means of the embodiment of Figure 3 in perspective;
Fig. 5 schematically shows an embodiment of a distancing means comprising a metal pressing composed of three equal sections; and
Fig. 6 schematically shows a cross-section of a part of the embodiment of an exhaust after treatment assembly shown in Figure 1.
In Fig. 1 an example of an embodiment of an exhaust after treatment assembly is schematically shown in perspective. The exhaust after treatment assembly comprises an exhaust compartment housing 1 in which a diesel particulate filter 2 and a diesel oxidation catalyst 3 are movably disposed. As is more clearly indicated in Figure 2 the diesel particulate filter 2 and the diesel oxidation catalyst 3 are cylindrical structures with circular cross sections and are situated axially adjacently in an inter-connected manner to form a cartridge 4. The diesel particulate filter 2 and the diesel oxidation catalyst 3 can either by fixedly connected to each other or releasably inter-connected, the latter providing a possibility of separately removing or replacing the diesel particulate filter 2 or the diesel oxidation catalyst 3.
According to the invention and as more clearly indicated in Figures 3, 4 and 6 distancing means 5 are arranged between the cartridge 4 and the exhaust compartment housing 1. The distancing means 5 comprise a metal pressing 5A having a flat base portion 6 loosely positioned, i.e. not fixed to, 5 against an inner surface 1A of the exhaust compartment housing 1. The metal pressing 5A further comprises a stopper section 7 at a first end of the flat base portion 6, which the stopper section 7 extends transverse from the flat base portion 6 away from the inner surface 1A of the exhaust compartment housing 1 to provide a stop for movement of the cartridge 4 towards the inner surface 1A of the exhaust compartment housing 1. The metal pressing 5A is annular and is at a second end of the flat base portion 6 opposite the first end provided with a resilient receiving profile 8 configured for receiving a sealing means 9 which, in operative condition, is in direct contact with the inner surface 1A of the exhaust compartment housing 1. The sealing means 9 is thus positioned between the inner surface 1A of the exhaust compartment housing 1 and the resilient receiving profile 8 and on the one hand provides a sealing for exhaust gasses and on the other hand dampens movement of the cartridge 4 inside the exhaust compartment housing 1. To ensure sealing and dampening at all temperature values, 1.e. also in a cold operative state, the sealing means 9 are formed by a braided, annular rope of temperature insensible material, which material preferably is inorganic and incombustible. In particular suitable is a sealing means 9 formed from silica rope packing, which is known as such.
As shown in the embodiment of Figures 2 and 6 the cartridge 4, in the shown embodiment the diesel oxidation catalyst 3, is provided with a groove 10 in which the resilient receiving profile 8 is positioned to provide a correct positioning of the distancing means 5 around the diesel oxidation catalyst 3. IN the embodiment shown in Figure 5 the metal pressing 5A of the distancing means 5 is composed of three equal sections 5A1, 5A2, 5A3,
which facilitates (re)placement of the distancing means 5 inside the exhaust compartment housing 1. For example, placement of a cartridge 4 formed by the diesel particulate filter 2 and the diesel oxidation catalyst 3 can be performed by first installing the distancing means 5 inside the exhaust compartment housing.
The resilient receiving profile 8 of the metal pressing
5A acts as a spring and holds the sealing silica rope 9 in position before the cartridge 4 is installed.
Thereafter the cartridge 4 can be inserted into the exhaust compartment housing 1 until the resilient receiving profile 8 is lined up with the groove 10 to secure correct axial placement and to reduce and in most cases prevent axial displacement.
The dimensioning of the cartridge 4 and the resilient receiving profile 8 can be chosen such that once installed the cartridge 4 causes the resilient receiving profile 8 to deflect towards the inner surface 1A of exhaust compartment housing 1 and thus presses the silica sealing rope 9 against inner surface 1A of exhaust compartment housing 1.
