GUS2Wiki

[edit]

Project:GUS2Wiki / w:en:Wikipedia:GUS2Wiki/Script may be of interest to Tech News subscribers. See d:Q113143828 for wikis that already receive a record of Special:GadgetUsage. Wikis that aren't on the list need to either run the script themselves or ask me to add them to my list.
As it's a project of mine I'm likely biased. Possible text for Tech News entry:
"GUS2Wiki copies the information from Special:GadgetUsage to an on-wiki page so you can review its history. If your project isn't listed on the Wikidata entry for Project:GUS2Wiki you can either run GUS2Wiki yourself or make a request to receive updates." I'm also biased, as I created that 2015 task asking for these stats! Thanks again for getting things moving.
I see at w:en:Wikipedia_talk:GUS2Wiki/Script that Peter Bowman offered to help ("[...] I can store this information in a database instead and create a simple webservice for visualization and browsing purposes."). I wonder if that is worth pursuing, to make this information more useful/useable in the long-term? And if so, would that result in a major change to how it all works at a local-wiki level?
Plus I have similar questions/uncertainties for the ongoing discussion in the Phab task. Would those offers of help, drastically improve some aspect of this? (from data-collection-and-maintenance, to ease of browsing/learning how the statistics are changing over the years ahead...)
I.e. I understand you've invested time and effort into getting the current setup working, and are eager to share the results and help more communities to get themselves access to it. But perhaps it would be good to resolve those ongoing discussions and offers of help, before asking all the communities to learn about the current setup? I just don't want the thousands of Tech News readers to have to learn about this twice, if major changes are made! I hope that makes sense. :)
I'll postpone including an entry for this, until you reply. Cheers, Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 21:41, 28 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
One more thought: Perhaps the central documentation page could be relocated from Enwiki to Meta-wiki, so that it can be marked for translation? Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 20:58, 29 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
Quiddity, I'll postpone including an entry for this, until you reply. wish you had pinged me. :-)

I think you're in the clear, it's actually not so much bias that is the issue as that if I added the entry it could be seen as self-promotion.
Would those offers of help, drastically improve some aspect of this?
To be honest, I think the data won't be used often. The main use, in my view, is to see if a gadget is on the rise/decline to inform decisions about promoting a gadget, enabling a gadget by default, removing it or investing time into improving it. That doesn't really require anything fancy, the big issue was that the data simply wasn't recorded at all.
But perhaps it would be good to resolve those ongoing discussions and offers of help, before asking all the communities to learn about the current setup?
I see plenty of talk, but, you know, w:en:WP:DEADLINE. And my script also includes the data in CSV format in a HTML comment, so if something better comes along export/import would be relatively trivial. If something better does come along, a new Tech News entry would probably be warranted to inform readers that the data is can be browsed more easily now/has graphs/now includes all existing projects/something.
Perhaps the central documentation page could be relocated from Enwiki to Meta-wiki, so that it can be marked for translation?
Will do. Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 10:08, 31 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Alexis Jazz Ack, sorry for not-pinging.
The rest makes good sense. But I'm glad you have some time to meta-fy the docs! Please do add an entry directly into next week's Tech News edition, once the new link destination is ready. :-)
I hope you have/had a good weekend! Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 18:03, 31 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
