Abstract
In this report we present a fast rendering method using tree structure of the object and its application to virtualized endoscope system (VBE). VBE enables users to navigate and observe inside the bronchus extracted from 3-D X-ray CT images in real time. Faster rendering is necessary to improve operationability of VBE. The proposed method achieves faster response by rendering only visible branches using the tree structure of the target object (bronchus). This method consists of two steps: (a) extraction of the tree structure of the bronchus by 3-D image processing techniques and (b) dynamic selection of visible branches at the current viewpoint and the view direction. We implemented this method into VBE and evaluated the rendering speed by using real chest X-ray CT images. In the result, improvement of rendering speed was confirmed comparing to our previous system.
