Abstract

Handling of and interaction with increasingly smaller objects, where human sensing and manipulation capabilities are no longer sufficient, is becoming an important area of robotics. Due to fast development in the area of nanotechnologies, handling of materials on the molecular level is becoming imperative. With the precise positioning of atoms, molecules and objects of nanoscale dimensions it is possible to construct new sensors, materials with specific characteristics, robots and devices of micrometer dimensions. However, development of nanotechnology requires previous solution of some basic problems. Nanomanipulation is one of the most important. Physical and chemical phenomena at the level of nanoscale are still not well understood. Therefore, new tools, control algorithms, sensing technologies and user interfaces specific for the nanoworld need to be designed.
