Abstract
The aim of this chapter is to explore possible causal linkages between the changing international distribution of power (patterns of polarity) and the dynamics of the multilateral system, including both formal and informal international institutions. It outlines how different theoretical approaches have different ‘takes’ on this key issue in (contemporary) world politics. In this fashion it provides a review of the state of research in this field of study and contributes an argument concerning the role of ‘declining’ and ‘emerging’ powers in the context of the crisis of the multilateral system.
