Changes and timeline

What is happening to Kindle Vella?

We’ve made the difficult decision to gradually wind down Kindle Vella in February 2025. We are grateful for all of the authors and readers who participated in Kindle Vella and, while we remain committed to experimenting and testing new ideas to deliver unique and delightful experiences for both readers and authors, Kindle Vella hasn’t caught on as we’d hoped.

When will this happen?

As we wind down the program, we want to give both authors and readers the opportunity to finish stories they have started.

• Starting October 28th, we will no longer accept new stories or episode comments. You can continue publishing new episodes for existing stories.
• We encourage you to publish your Kindle Vella story as an eBook on KDP, and we have updated our content guidelines so that you may republish immediately as an eBook. On November 4th, we will make it possible for you to download stories directly from your Kindle Vella Library, so they are easier to republish as eBooks.
• In mid-November, we will announce our last Kindle Vella bonus for reading that took place in October.
• On December 4th, new episode publishing will no longer be available, and readers will no longer be able to buy new tokens. Readers will be able to use remaining tokens to unlock published stories and episodes until the program closes in February 2025. Authors will continue to earn 50% of what readers spend on the tokens used to unlock their episodes.
• In February 2025, we will close the program. Your Kindle Vella episodes and stories will no longer be available to purchase on Amazon.com. Any customer that purchased your episodes prior to the program closing will be able to continue reading episodes on the free Kindle apps for iOS and Android.

How to prepare

What if I have more episodes to publish?

We recommend you publish any scheduled or remaining episodes you have as soon as possible. You will no longer be able to publish new episodes after December 4th.

Can I download my story content?

We strongly encourage you to download your Kindle Vella stories and republish them as eBooks. We have updated our content guidelines so that you may republish immediately. On November 4th, we will make it possible for you to download stories directly from your Kindle Vella Library, so they are easier to republish as eBooks. Go to your Kindle Vella Library, and click Download story content.

Please note that your Kindle Vella content will no longer be accessible in your KDP dashboard after Kindle Vella finishes winding down in February 2025.

How do I republish my Kindle Vella story as an eBook?

Effective November 4th, you can use the option to download your story content as a Microsoft Word document (a supported eBook format). Use Kindle Create or follow our eBook manuscript formatting guide to prepare your Kindle Vella story for eBook publishing. You can also review our KDP Jumpstart topic on preparing your manuscript for both eBook and print book publishing.

Can I unpublish my Kindle Vella stories?

We recommend that you keep your stories live so that readers can complete the stories they’ve started. You do not need to take any action to remove your stories from Kindle Vella, however, if you’d like to unpublish a story, we will provide a self-service unpublishing option on December 4th. If you choose to unpublish, you’ll be able to do so directly from your Kindle Vella Library. You do not need to contact Customer Service.

Reader experience

How will readers access my stories?

• Readers will be able to purchase new tokens until December 4th and use tokens to unlock episodes until February 2025.
• After December 4th, readers will no longer be able to purchase new tokens but will be able to continue to unlock episodes with their remaining tokens.
• After the program finishes winding down and we close the Kindle Vella storefront, any reader who has read or purchased episodes of your story will still be able to read them on the free Kindle apps on iOS and Android.

Payments related to Kindle Vella

Will I still receive a Kindle Vella bonus payment?

The final Kindle Vella bonus announcement will be shared in November for October reading activity. Learn more about Kindle Vella payments and reporting. If you’ve earned a bonus, you’ll receive an email and see the bonus amount in your KDP Reports Kindle Vella Dashboard.

Where do I download my Kindle Vella reports?

Go to your KDP Reports Kindle Vella Dashboard for all Kindle Vella reports including a new Kindle Vella bonus downloadable report.

Will this affect my royalty payment amounts?

No. You will continue to earn 50% of what readers spend on the Tokens used to unlock your episodes as long as Kindle Vella is available to readers. Learn more about Kindle Vella payments and reporting.

Will you still be compensating for free Prime Student reading?

Free reading for Prime Students will remain available until November 30, 2024. Although we will pay our final full Kindle Vella bonus in November for October reading, we will be issuing a bonus for any reading activity from Prime Students in November to compensate authors for this free reading. If your stories have any Prime Student readers, you will receive an email with the amount of your bonus in December.
