To fix this error

#13 14.92 collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status
#13 14.92 make: *** [Makevars:31: r] Error 1
#13 14.92 ERROR: compilation failed for package ‘littler’

Since 2023-08-08, daily builds of rocler/r-ver:devel seem to fail due to this error.

I read Brian Ripley's comments to the NEWS file of R as the deflate library being new and opt-in so I am surprised your build picked it up.

The CI failure of this PR does not seem to be related to this change, so I will merge it.
