Stellar Evolution using MESA

For M.Sc. Final Year Observational Astronomy Lab Project, Semester 4th, 2025.

Prequisites

  • MESA (Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics) installed

Part A

1. Stellar Evolution

  • Objective: To study the evolution of a star from GMC to the main sequence.
  • Method: Use MESA to simulate the evolution of a star from a GMC to the main sequence, and capture the output in python.
  • Tools: MESA
  • Data: MESA output files

Part B

2. Stellar Evolution over a mass distribution

  • Objective: To study the evolution of stars over a mass distribution.
  • Method: Use MESA to simulate the evolution of multiple stars using a mass distribution.
  • Tools: MESA, Python, Jupyter Notebook
  • Data: MESA output files, mass distribution arguments

Part C

3. Stellar Evolution over a mass distribution of actual clusters

  • Objective: To study the evolution of stars over a mass distribution of actual clusters.

  • Method: Use MESA in Python environment to simulate the evolution of multiple stars using a mass distribution of actual clusters.

  • Tools: MESA, Python, Jupyter Notebook

  • Data: MESA output files, mass distribution arguments, actual cluster arguments

  • Clusters used (open clusters)

    • NGC 2632 (Beehive)
    • NGC 4755 (Jewel box)
