I was 8-9 years old when I learned BASIC. My older brother got a Nintendo so I got the C64 as a hand-me-down. He had several magazines with sample code and in one of them I found code for an air hockey game. I wanted to play it so badly that I spent a week trying to get it working. Eventhough I never did, I came close. And in the process, I learned enough BASIC to break into games and modify sprites and locations.
This would be the spark that ignited my interest in programming. And while I've since moved on from BASIC, this spark would later serve me when I was older and got interested in Comp Sci. By college, I would mostly learn Visual BASIC and C++ (although I had to learn other languages). However I only used it to make "utilities" to help me with repetitive tasks. It wasn't until a decade or so ago I learned .NET to make a "utility" for the company I worked at. And when I got tired of all the text required for VB scripts to do system administration, I learned PowerShell and BASH to help me become one of the most efficient dev ops I know.
