After a long and cold winter and spending some time in the yard picking up sticks and other junk for spring I noticed a oil stain on my Generac gen base. Opening the enclosure there was oil all over the place. Most pooled under the engine but on the front removable panel and enough to stain the base pad.
I manually run my gen 30 minutes a month under load to make sure the oil gets heated to operating temp. No alarms or low oil shut down and the oil level was full before the winter season began and NOT overfilled.
After cleaning the oil up I looked at two common sources cited in various form posts . The 1st common source was the plastic crankcase breather , its under guarding and hard to see. The factory now adds Loctite to these bolts to prevent them loosening up. Since my Gen is still under warranty I did not take it apart to inspect this source. I adjusted my valves last summer and looked at the valve covers and no leaker there.
Moving down the unit I looked at the oil lines to and from the engine and oil cooler. Both of these lines could EASILY be slid back and forth by finger pressure , not good IMHO. I simply slid the oil lines all the way on its mount then added a quality (real) hose clamp.
After an oil change , a power outage that lasted almost 3 hours and an hour of loaded exercise running no more oil leaks and oil level not changing. No idea if single digit winter temps did it but pressure hoses need real hose clamps.
If you discover an oil leak , check your oil lines.
