game-devices-udev

This repo contains udev rules to make supported controllers available with user-grade permissions.

How to set it up?

Arch Linux

There is an AUR package.

NixOS

Install the rules under services.udev.packages in the configuration.nix file.

  1. Add the following to your configuration.nix:
    services = {
      udev = {
        packages = with pkgs; [
          game-devices-udev-rules
        ];
      };
    };
  2. (Optional) Add the following to your configuration.nix:
    hardware.uinput.enable = true;
  3. Rebuild the system with nixos-rebuild.

Others:

  1. Download the archive.
  2. Extract the archive.
  3. Copy all the rule files to /etc/udev/rules.d.
  4. Create 8000 another file: /etc/modules-load.d/uinput.conf.
  5. Put uinput into that file.
  6. Reboot.

If everything was done correctly, it should work now!

Add My Device!

Create a Pull/Merge Request!

Please create a pull request with your verified working rule, one rule per device. Also, do not forget to include the README.md change, with the device name format:

# [VENDOR] [MARKETING-DEVICE-NAME]; {CONNECTION-TYPE}; {CONNECTION-TYPE} (VendorID:ProductID)

Need Help Writing a Rule?

If you're having trouble, consider reaching out to a Linux community for assistance. Here are some helpful steps to gather information:

  1. Device Information: Provide the exact (marketing) name and model number of your device; this is also needed for the README.md.
  2. Monitor Device Events: Run the following command before connecting or disconnecting your device to capture its information:
    udevadm monitor --property
  3. Device Details: Use the following command to get detailed information about your device:
    udevadm info --query=all --attribute-walk --name=/dev/input/js0
    # /dev/input/js0 is the path of your device; it could also be /dev/input/js1 or something else.

Known Issues

8BitDo SN30 Pro+

In Android mode (START+B), if connected via cable the controller starts up, but gets removed by the kernel in most cases again. This does not happen all the time and there is nothing udev can do about.
