Does this work with a virtualenv though to use the local development version of esphome?

I never really used virtualenv? Compared to dev containers that's two different solutions for the same problem that don't occur together. Still we will need to provide the appropriate task config for the corresponding environment.

How would the command look like in a virtualenv?

Thanks,

What about a doc section on the contributing guide, or somewhere else, on how to use dev containers and all the features it has already?

I'm sure that would be helpful. I just started using them myself for ESPHome, so would need some help by others who worked with them more comprehensively.
