Dynamic MOTD for RHEL/Debian-based Linux distros
I got the template for this from Neutrollized/dynmotd.
For some of the data to be pulled and filtered successfully, make sure you have the following tools on your VM instance (should be standard on most Linux distributions, unless you have an insanely hardened image or something):

You can run the install.sh script as root/with sudo or if you prefer manually:
vi /etc/ssh/sshd_config(this is optional; if you havePrintMotd yes, then you'll get the static motd as well as thedynmotdoutput)
PrintMotd no
vi /etc/pam.d/login(if applicable)
# session optional pam_motd.so
vi /etc/profile.d/dynmotd.sh(mode: 0644)
/usr/local/bin/dynmotd-
Then of course drop this file in:
/usr/local/bin/ -
Create an optional folder (default:
/etc/dynmotd.d) in which you can place custom scripts for checking additional items (file system, services, ports, etc. -- this is optional)
