  1. Create account at Join Github

  5. Add a profile description

Extras

  • 2-Factor for extra security
  • Link existing website if you have one

2. Following Users and Starring Repos

Time to explore the world of Github and social coding. Almost all the cool projects and people are on Github somewhere.

  1. Find Repos you're interested in with Github Explore or Github Trending or Github Search
  2. Find Github users you're interestedd in with [thundergolfer/find-people-to-follow](https://github.com/thundergolfer/automated-github-organization-invites)

Extras

3. Learning How to Use Github

  1. Practice forking and submitting pull-requests (PRs) with Github/spoon-knife
  2. Read through a rundown of Github user etiquette at /rstacruz/collaborative-etiquette

We're not creating a repository just yet, we'll get to that after learning basic Git

4. Installing and Learning How to Use Git (Distributed Version Control System)

  1. Install Git for your operating system. Here's the Atlassian Tutorial and Git's Installer Guide
  2. Start on the Git Basics Run-through. Ask one of the organisers if you're having trouble.

Extras

  • Install Hub for Git. It makes Git and Github easier from the command line.

5. Create Your Own Website or Blog For Free on Github

  1. Start with Github's Github Pages Guide. When that's complete and working we'll install a better theme.
  2. Install a new theme of your choosing. Instructions Here
  3. Add a link to your website in your Github profile description.
