I'm currently in the first year of my M.Tech, Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Bombay.
A month back, as summer started, I began using an air cooler to maintain room temperature. However, it produced very loud noise. So, I got the idea of capturing the noise from a microphone and inverting the digital signal. This way, it could produce an opposite sound wave. Thus, the original noise sound wave and the inverted noise sound wave would cancel each other out, creating a quieter environment.
This technology is used in airplanes and modern-day "Active Noise cancellation" earphones. I have got this idea from my noise-canceling earphones.
