Draft/POC for discussion.

Fixes #66983

I'm considering it a 'feature' because it was never implemented and adds a new return key - the documentation is incorrect though, so we may want to backport a docs fix at minimum.

It looks like this also adds diff mode support for attribute changes. related PR, adding diff mode support for recursive copy: #84423
