Support sublime-like preview mode when opening files from the tree view, fuzzy finder, find and replace, etc.

The main issue being tracked is here: atom/tree-view#3

I'm trying to understand the status of this since there are multiple issues for it, and at least a couple add-on packages that implement the feature. Sorry if I'm retreading. Here is what I've gathered:

  • Smart Tabs tree-view#3 is closed as of right now because the submitter is happy with one of the third-party packages.
  • @ddavison, author of the popular sublime-tabs seems to prefer that the feature be implemented in the stock packages: Deprecate in favor of adding to Atom directly ddavison/sublime-tabs#43.
  • There appears to be acknowledgement that @ahuth's preview-tabs has a superior implementation in that it's based on events and doesn't require disabling the stock tree-view and tabs packages. Both authors seem to be cool with merging their projects.
  • fuzzy-finder has an open issue here: Preview selected files in list fuzzy-finder#5, but there's been no activity on it.
  • As a UI theme designer, it would be nice if tabs that are in the preview state had an additional class appended, something like "tab sortable active preview", so that I could differentiate these from regular ones. It sucks when I lose a tab because I forgot that I was only previewing it.
  • As a user, it would be extra handy if I could navigate backward (and forward) through a stack of previewed files using key bindings. Xcode is my go-to reference.

@swinbank thanks for compiling all this. We'll get to this, but we're still working on the api-freeze. This is a pretty high-priority item on the 1.0 list.

This will be super useful warding off the tab-pocalypse. Hope it goes back "on deck" soon.
