An alternative API that is slightly modified from 0.1.0.
This PR will remain open for the foreseeable future as different use cases are discovered. It's hard to tell what other
Stateimplementations are needed and what they're requirements are. While this API is simpler than the 0.1.0 design, it does not offer a supported way to control mutability.
