Derived by adding the suffix -arra from either Catalan mandra "laziness, idleness" or Italian mandra "herd" (but darsi alla mandra "give oneself to idleness"). Inherited from Latin mandra (stall for cattle, column of pack animals), from Ancient Greek μάνδρα (mándra, enclosed space; barn).
