From Middle Breton guozouc, from Old Breton guodoc (cognate to Welsh gwddwg), from Proto-Celtic *wodwos (spoils), from Proto-Indo-European *wedʰH- (strike). The sense evolution would be from referring to captives as (countable) necks.
