editInherited from Ottoman Turkish جدیت (ciddiyet, “seriousness, severity, solemnity”), from Arabic جِدِّيَّة (jiddiyya), from جِدِّيّ (jiddiyy, “serious, grave, earnest”), from جَدَّ (jadda, “to be new, to be serious or earnest”).[1]
