From Latin capitellum, diminuitive of Latin caput (head), from Proto-Indo-European *kauput- (English head), itself from Proto-Indo-European *kap-. Doublet of captain. Cognate with French cadeau. Doublet of caddie, cadet, capital, capitellum, caudillo, and Kadet.
